Aveda hair treatment and highlights!!

Review for May Chong

Always happy to be back here with May, sat through 3hours of treatment and coloring her.. and got what i always wanted! ?? Her meticulous colouring and sectioning of my hair, and topping it up with a good Aveda treatment thereafter. Now I'm no longer worried about dry hair after highlights! ??

Scalp & Hair Treatment

Review for Seven

This is my fifth visit to Gataomo - always a great experience! I did a Scalp & Hair treatment with Seven, love how detailed he was in explaining the treatment process and he also gave great advice! After the treatment, Seven also gave me a massage on the neck & shoulders using Aveda stress relieve oil - it was really nice & relaxing! I really like that Gataomo provides free scanning of the scalp, it allows me to fully assess the condition of my scalp and therefore finding the best treatment for it. Their services isn't cheap, especially after collaborating with Aveda, but it is worth it - you get what you paid for. Highly recommended!

Very satisfied

Review for Vanness

I went for a haircut with Vanness (Creative Manager) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He was really attentive to how I wanted my hair to be cut, and also gave advice to how I should upkeep it and blow-dry it in the future. Never tried to upsell anything and was completely not pushy which I appreciated! He also gave a massage and a scalp treatment (that was complimentary with the 20% Beauty Undercover September discount) that was very pleasant and relaxing. Lastly, what was most important, the result of my hair - I really liked how it complimented my face shape and was easy to upkeep! Overall great experience and this, coupled with the great price point, would make me highly recommend Gataomo.

Awesome Service and Quality Products

Review for Vanness

I've visited Gataomo for three times for hair colour and haircut services and the experience has been wonderful so far! Vanness recommended hair colours that are suitable for my skin tone and Jacky gave a haircut which suited my face shape and personal style. They are extremely attentive and I felt safe leaving my tresses in their hands! Also, sometimes the process of colouring your hair is really long and boring, but at Gataomo the stylists make the effort to chat and joke with the customers, making the hours spent at the salon enjoyable and interesting. Many friends complimented on my new hair colour as well after I had my hair coloured at Gataomo. Would definitely recommend this salon to my friends and family!

An EXTRAORDINARY experience

Review for Jacky Chong

I have been cutting my hair at Gataomo since University years. So I guess almost close to 7 years now. Stuck around with the hair salon because of the EXCELLENT service. My hairdresser is Jacky btw, who is definitely the veteran there. Once you step into the salon, you are welcomed by a fragrant fruit tea, warm smiles from the staff there, coupled with relaxing music to ease your tired body. It's like drifting off into a different space and time. Feel free to chit chat with your hairdresser or just stare blankly at the mirror until the whole experience is over. They use AVEDA hair products, which are slightly pricier but good for your hair scalp. My face started to have outbreaks after 30 years of age, but improved a lot once I started using AVEDA hair products. Recently, they also introduced some new equipment to scan your hair scalp, and to inform you of how healthy it is. Overall, I'm a SUPER FAN of Gataomo. FIVE star experience. You won't regret it.

First timer @ Gataomo

Review for Seven

I had a brilliant experience at Gataomo Hair Salon as a first timer. I first learnt about this place through BU and it was a great find! I experienced the skilled expertise of Seven, and did a cut + soft rebonding + hair and scalp treatment at a really affordable price considering the level of service and products utilised. Seven took the time to bring me through the various steps of the process and made sure I was at ease at all times. All in all, it was up to my expectations and I believe there'll be a next time! Great job!

Good experience

My hairstylist was Seven, and he was really willing to accommodate my rather strange hairstyle request. He also made very good suggestions as to how to improve the hairstyle and make it more suitable for me. Only thing that may be hard for some people is that Seven is very much more comfortable with Chinese, so if you don't speak the language it may make communication a bit tougher. I also like that it is pretty affordable. With a haircut, blow and dry, and student pricing, my trip to the hair salon cost $30.

I'm quite satisfied with my haircut!

Review for Vanness

Got my hair cut at Gataomo Hair Salon. (It's Hokkien for 'cut hair', geddit geddit? Took me way took long to get it, heh.)
#04-79 at Far East Plaza, $28 for student price, cut + wash. Apparently they go by appointments and not walk-ins, but the hairstylist assigned to me (Vanness) was available so yay! Next time if I book an appointment with him, it will be $33 because he's actually a senior stylist, so I guess this time round I 赚到. I mentioned my concerns about my dry and damaged hair and he told me to blow-dry my hair every day so it can be smoother and have more volume, but I told him I am too busy and lazy. At the end of the haircut, he said “要吹头发!吹 ah,自己懒惰,不要怪头发!” HA HA HA got told off by my hairdresser for being a lazy bum.

I'm quite satisfied with my haircut! I usually look like a toot after cutting my hair but this time round it's a little more forgiving. After the less-than-ideal haircut at the UTown salon ($4.90, I should have known), my hair is finally in shape now that he layered it nicely for me! Also, for once, my fringe is not too short to face people.

The stylist was attentive

So after running through the list of salons at Beautyundercover, I ended up with GATAOMO. The reviews and image gallery of hairstyles provided here certainly helped to solidify that choice. Even so, a haircut at a new salon can be daunting at times, particularly the aspect of not knowing what to aspect for my own hair. But alas, GATAOMO didn't disappoint. In fact, it's probably the only salon I walked out feeling great about the haircut I just had (Perhaps I have been visiting tons of crappy ones heh).

The stylist was attentive and provided really good advice on several things ranging from hairtype, face shape, hair care, etc. Came for a haircut, left with a colouring too. For sure, it will be the place to go to the next time i need a haircut. Keep up the good work guys!

Gave me a neater and trendier cut

Review for May Chong

Went to Gataomo again after so many years (my last cut there was 5 years ago)! I find their hair stylists really patient and attentive. May who attended to me this time was no exception. She's pretty quiet but when I asked to have a certain style, she advised me against it based on what she observed about the condition of my hair. She also took the initiative to give me a neater, trendier cut. All in all, I trust the judgement of the stylists at Gataomo and I'm happy with the results!

Truly liked the result!

Review for Vanness

Went for my first cut after all the cheap but unreliable 10 minute salons and at gataomo you really pay for what you get.

Service was good as they willingly gave me a cut though I did not make a booking.

Vaness was my hairstylist and could tell the difference immediately, he was v attentive to every snip and chatted comfortably, giving advice on why he cut my hair in a certain way. I truly liked the result! Won't be my last visit that's for sure. :)

Credits to her skills and effort!

Review for May Chong

After reading all the positive reviews here, with recommendations on this place for short hair cuts, I have decided to try getting a hair cut at this salon. It was my first time visiting Gataomo. I have the intention to cut short hair, initially had shoulder length, rebonded, very thick hair, I'm pretty happy with the outcome of my hair cut. My hair thickness makes it very difficult to cut short but I'm really glad my stylist, Mei Wei did a good job. Credits to her skills and effort! I would recommend to my ladies to get short hair cuts at this place. ((:

Quiet and polite

Review for Vanness

Went in Sept last month. Vaness did my fringe (bangs) and had my hair cut short. Whole hair cut costed less than $30 (I have very long hair and they charged me student price). I really love what he did with my hair! He even blew curls for me at the end of my hair cut. I've always had bangs throughout the years, always regretted and hated it after the cut. But this time it was different, he was really attentive in listening to what I wanted and gave me some suggestions too. I'll definitely go back to him for my next cut. The stylist, Vaness, is not chatty. Not the extremely friendly type of hair stylist but not rude or anything. He is just quiet and polite. Might be because I am not a regular.I did however, experience a cold shoulder by a particular staff when I walked into the salon (with my girlfriend), there was no smiles, no greeting, no nothing. Don't want to comment further in detail because I plan to make this my regular salon in future and I don't want to offend anyone there!Overall, Vaness did a great job, he is the only stylist whom I trust (to cut my fringe now). I hope he keeps up the standard :)

Gataomo (Hair Salon Review Singapore)

Review for May Chong

Day/Date: Fri 5 July
Time: 3pm
Stylist: May Chong. Randomly assigned to me.
Walk-in, less than 5 mins wait.
Dry cut (short hair)

Length of stay: About an hour.

It is only now after just getting back that checking their facebook, I realize my haircut was done by the manager. And I am surprised because she was tactless and rather displeased me.

Out of the whole team of guys, I got the manager. Normally, it might have been a good thing (to be attended to by the manager) since she charged only $32 (for first-timer and I didn’t specify a stylist).

At the end, she said it would be $40 if I asked for her the next time.

There won’t be a next time that I would ask for her.

From the photos provided in Beauty Undercover’s link (in comments section of that post), I thought a few guys’ haircut looked good. Hovering my mouse over the photos, the salon name came up: Gataomo @ Far East Plaza.

Before deciding on Gataomo however, I checked online as usual for reviews. Positive reviews are all in their Facebook. Negative reviews are few online.

It is from the replies to the negative reviews that I find that the salon or their representative who posts, is very protective and defensive of their stylists. That in itself might be a problem if anything goes wrong with a customer’s visit. Something to keep in mind.

From the photos I saw at their facebook, I didn’t like the ones by “May” (just glanced at the name but didn’t commit it to memory). I liked the styles by the assistant manager Jenzson but didn’t ask for him when I was there.

While I didn’t have great expectations (I don’t have much expectations of any Far East Plaza’s hair salons), I hoped this might be a salon I would visit again.

Unfortunately… I most likely won’t be returning (not after this review), even if I might want to try Edwin Lee (more likely) or Jenzson.

1) No proper receptionist. For a moment after entering and standing there, I thought I would remain a standing piece of furniture. But fortunately, a male stylist working on a customer beside the empty booth managed to speak to me, asking if I wanted a haircut. The other staff hardly acknowledged the entry of a customer.

2) The place is too small. I discovered the seat that I was in, near the glass side, is actually useless because it doesn’t allow the stylist to cut on the left side. I only realized it when she asked me to move to the next seat (after a male customer just left).

3) Hairwasher was a man with body odor. The hairwashing was bland. So far, I keep saying only Reds @Takashimaya has the best and sexiest washes.

4) The stylist was tactless, as mentioned. So far, 2 salons have learnt to avoid pointing out things that the customer might not like: Kim Robinson and La Coco.

I noticed that when I dropped by Kim Robinson and La Coco previously, the stylists asked if I wanted to dye my hair. I had assumed they wanted to earn extra cash from the extras such as dyeing. Also, dyeing would create depth and highlights for my black hair.

But on second thought, I realized later that they were probably being tactful about my strands of white (besides wanting to earn more money).

On those occasions when they asked if I wanted hair dye, I had said “no”, and they had wisely left it at that.

From reviews I read, young ladies dislike stylists pointing out their hair flaws.

May Chong however, further negatively mentioned the customer’s appearance another two or three times, which really puzzled me.

She should learn from Eric Lim of Kim Robinson. He has perfect tact. When I didn’t know what to say about their hairwash when he asked how it was, he helpfully provided, “Can be better?”. It saved the conversation and spared me from having to say how bad it was.

5) When I came home and bro saw the back, he exclaimed, “Ai yo. So short.”.

Before the stylist started, I had made it known that I didn’t want it too short. I said I wanted a different style but not too short, and give it some volume.

The result is that the back of the neck now has green stubble that she told me she couldn’t remove cleanly because they don’t have shaving blades.

The back end is almost a straight cut.

Her idea was to shave up beneath and cover over with the back hair. (Makes me wonder what Eric Lim/Kim Robinson would have said). It was to prevent a duck’s tail from forming.

Although the idea of shaving up and then covering over didn’t sound good, I thought to give it a try since the actual thing might turn out to be nicer than described.

Furthermore, when I mentioned it was too short after it was done, she “moved” the “blame” to me by saying it depended on what I was looking for, how bold I was willing to go.

It’s just typical outdated defence from a Malaysian “stylist”. How many stylists actually blame/convince their customers like this these days?

“Cool-looking” was the word I had also used when describing to her what I wanted. I had already specified I didn’t want it too short. Green stubble is definitely too short and not nice.

Ironically, she had said she wouldn’t slope up my nape because it would look like a guy, not nice. So now with green stubble, it’s nicer?

While I was talking to her about the green stubble, a male stylist who might be Edwin/Jenzson was sitting behind watching my reflection in the mirror that was in front of me.

I wondered what he was thinking. Did he see the mistake and think he would do it differently? If he can do it differently, I welcome it. Unfortunately, he just sat there with a female stylist beside him, and later got up and left.

—–
Overall, after hair wax, the style would look good from the front and sides. The back when volumized would also look pretty good. The only mistake/flaw is the back end with the green stubble. And my displeasure about her comments.

Also, the service from the stylist and hairwasher was good. Two of them blew dry my short hair at the same time (when most of the customers had left, leaving another person and myself). The stylist took her time to ensure everything was “perfect”. She also took time to brush off the hair on my face and neck with a tissue just before I walked out from the cashier.

Next up = another salon for the killing in 2~3 months’ time.

Great service cosy salon plus good prices

Review for Vanness

Just came out of Gataomo Salon with my boy at Far East Plaza Level 4. Cut my long hair short by the recommndation of the stylist Vanness. Great service cosy salon plus good prices! Also did a scalp treatment for my itchy scalp problem. The boy had a great gataby inspired cut by Jenzson. Ready for the weekend! Lucky to have seen their FB page or we would have missed this hidden gem out!

So helpful and honest

Review for May Chong

I have been going to Gataomo for my hair cuts almost every month. I find the stylists there very friendly and always so helpful and honest to the customers. My niece was the one who introduced this place to me and unlike those "fashion salons" who made a not very fashion forward guy like me feel conscious, Gataomo is very comfortable and they convinced me to make changes to my hairstyle starting from small ones one step at a time.

I cannot remember how long I have been going to them now! Hope they expand to a bigger salon though because the salon is always packed with excited customers and busy stylists doing their work! I would like to especially commend May Chong because although she is the salon manager, she is always very patient when cutting my hair and always advise what products work best for me when I ask and how I should style my hair. Really appreciated! Such a salon like Gataomo is really hard to come by especially in town area! All the stylists are always so smiley and really make customers feel close to them.

Awesome sharp skills

Review for Jacky Chong

Been a supporter of Gataomo for as long as I can remember! Sincere and friendly stuff plus awesome sharp skills- definitely can trust my hair in their hands! Jacky and Vanness are tops and I really look forward to my monthly hair fixes with them. Their cutting and colouring are fantastic and I always stand out with my beautiful head of current hairdo.

I recently brought a friend to do her korean perm at Gataomo and Edwin did a fabulous job with the perm and at a really affordable price compared to other overrated salons in Orchard. We heard Edwin had undergone professional perming study with Shiseido before.

Gataomo is definitely highly recommended and most of my friends and colleagues plus even my cosins are regulars here!

No attention to detail

Review for Vanness

Had a few hours to kill whilst my gf was having coffee with her friends while we were on holiday in SG. Read the reviews that said Gatoumo was a fairly decent chain. Boy was I wrong. The salon was full when I walked in but there was a guy at the counter. I asked him if they had any slot available and he said yes after looking at his watch and the appointment book. He turned out to be the stylist. My whole experience was over in 20mins. Boy, if I needed an army haircut I could have gone to any neighbourhood barber for half the price. I have short and coarse hair, so it is necessary to use the scissors so it doesn’t get too coarse when it gets longer.

So, Vanness the stylist proceeds to use a shaver on all sides – without first rinsing my hair product off. No attention to detail, and it almost seemed like an after thought when he used the scissors to trim the top. Then it was a quick 5 minute soap and rinse and that concluded the experience. Honestly, I’ve had much better haircuts elsewhere for less. Obviously he was trying to make a quick buck between customers, though I don’t know why people still go back to him.

Maybe I’ll give the other stylists a chance next time, but not Vanness.

Dear Disgruntled Traveller,

Firstly, we would like to thank you very much for making Gataomo your first choice hair salon while on holiday in Singapore.

It is indeed unfortunate and regretful that you have not enjoyed your brief experience with us, however- we would still like to offer you an understanding of what had transpired.

The Gataomo Team are all trained professionally by our Director and are humbly certified to be of the most satisfactory calibre. While most salons’ first step would be to wash away customers’ hair products prior hair cuts, this may not necessary be what we do here in Gataomo. Before a hair cut, the hair stylist would have to make certain professional assessments and to a certain extent, the texture of styled hair (in its most natural state) can help the stylist achieve the most desirable hair cut for different individuals.

Contrary to what you may have thought, our senior stylist- Vanness, who had attended to you was certainly in accordance with the aspect of paying attention to every detail. Our stylists will always use the most appropriate technique choice when attending to every customer. There may have been a lack of communication in the part where you felt uncomfortable when a hair shaver has been used. To this, we express our most sincere understanding and apology.

Although the Gataomo Team is well known to be scheduled mainly by booked-in appointments, we also serve to cater to the best of our abilities the needs of walk-in customers like yourself. A simple short, men’s, hair cut would typically be about 20 minutes which was why Vanness wanted to make sure your service would not get rushed by double checking his appointment book and watch. Your feedback has made us realized that we can benefit by taking more proactive steps in communicating to customers.

We would like to sincerely extend our promise of customer service excellence to you, should you be back in Singapore again. Please leave us your personal contact details, or email address, via private messaging on our FB page.

Looking forward to hearing from you very soon.
Thank you very much, once again!

With Best Regards,
GATAOMO TEAM

Wonderful first time experience at Gataomo

I went for a haircut last night, at “Gataomo” it’s really good. The service was excellent, and I could really see how much effort the hairdresser put in to give me a wonderful first time experience at Gataomo. Now I have bangs by the way. Even though it was a $20 cut-and-wash, I definitely felt it was worth it cause I feel fucking cute now.
