Hanami Barber @ The Central

Went down to have my ear wax removed. My left ear passaged is damaged by their tools. It bled and became inflamed. They refused to let me speak with their manager in charge. There was no apology nor compensation for my medical bills.

I went down to Hanami Barber with the intention of getting a haircut and a wash. I had brought along photos of my desired hairstyle. Originally, I had a mid-long hairstyle and my desired hairstyle is medium length. The hairdresser, a local, merely took a few seconds to look at the photos without examining my hair or even consulting me about my preference.

This should had been a clear warning sign to me, as she proceeded to completely cut away the hair on my sides, which is NOT what the photo shows. Without even asking to look at the photos again, she continues to cut, and the end result is a SHORT hairstyle which is totally different from what I had wanted. It had infuriated me enough to tell her that. Her response? She chuckled. No apologies were offered. I will not go back again.

Update: The haircut cost $38. I had not taken note of the name of my stylist as halfway through the cutting, I was already wishing for nothing more than to leave as soon as possible and had even rejected the complimentary coffee/tea once my stylist was done.

Did not pay the salon a visit per say but was really put off by their attitude on the phone. Was calling to enquire about a product they may or may not have known as Soda Spa foam (it was posted on Far East Tan-san labo page that they carried it and i was a few stops away from there). I understand that it’s a men’s barber so they may not even carry that (or they may have used to anyway since the product would be more popular among women instead) but the girl who answered the phone kept telling me they’re a men’s barber and said that she was not sure. I enquired if she could kindly just check (around the shop or with one of the styliststhis would after all just take like 5 seconds?). But she kept insisting that she was not sure and that they were very busy. Were they that busy that it would prevent them from talking? And here she was spending her time insisting she was ”not sure”. What really put me off was her insisting that she was ”not sure” after I even described the product to her. She did not even bother to check and can claim she was ”not sure”. I would have been fine if she told me that they do not carry the product after may just a quick verification around the shop (ie its not located on the shelves so they probably do not carry it) Was planning to bring my boyfriend here for a haircut but now I am definitely ”not sure” i would bring him here.

HANAMIGood：とにかく空いている。週末でも好きな時間に行ってOK！Bad：腕にバラツキがある気が・・ てな感じでしょうか。実はゴル吉の贔屓はもっとも人気のない（と思われる）HANAMIなのです。とにかく、いつも程良く空いているので、行く直前に電話して予約でOK。断られたことは1度もなし。といっても、ポツポツと客はいるので、孤独な思いもしないですよ。店員の
愛想も悪くないです。あと、普通床屋は遠慮がちにしか切ってくれない（切り過ぎてお客に怒られる のを恐れている？）のですが、ここは期待通りサッパリ切ってくれます。といってもボウズや角刈りにされるわけではありませんのでご安心を。まあ、たまにハズレの店員にあたって揉み上げの長さが違ったり、いまどきチェッカーズかよ！！ってくらい数本前髪が長いまま残されたりしましたが、これも、ご愛敬という事で（笑）。皆さんもお気に入りのお店、見つけてくださいね～。

(Translated: Usually empty this is a good place to go on the weekend! You can give a call just before you go down to Hanami – they have only refused me once. There is slight variation in skill amongst the barber but generally the haircut turns out nice. They tend not to reinvent your haircut and stick to the usual but I like it that way. The staff are also quite friendly)

従業員は当地の方々で、カット、シャンプーそして髭剃りという日本でおなじみの一通りをやってもらってS$38。日本円換算で日本とそんなに変わらない値段だと思いますが、たぶん当地の標準的な散髪代と比すると高いんだと思います。fujiyanはこの「はなみ」さんにお世話になったのは3回目。5-6席程度の店内は５、６分の入り。日本人とはっきりとわかるお客さんは今まで２名、ほかは（たぶん）中華系シンガポーリアン１名。多数を占めていたのは白人男性でした。彼らはおそらく、美容室ほど高い値段/サービスは避けたいものの、地元の散髪屋には腰が引けて、で、こちらの中価格/中サービスを見つけてきたのではないか、と勝手に推測する次第です。

(Translated: most of the employees are locals although they are trained well in grooming hair the Japanese way. The price is comparable to Japan. Most of the customers here seem to be caucasian males. The service is good here.)
