Where To Find Them

Overview

Description starts here...

How Much Do They Cost

Loves

  • Affordable hair services by trainee hairstylists
  • Customers seem to be happy with results of colouring
  • Trainee hairstylists tend to give good service (polite) and are meticulous at their work
  • You can (Should) make an appointment beforehand

Not-So-Happy-With

  • Hair outcomes might not be what you expect (trainee hairstylists are still not that skilful)
  • Waiting time can be long at times
  • Treatment time may take longer than usual salons (as trainees are not as experienced as qualified hairstylists)
  • You can't really ask for specific hairstylists
  • The place can be hard to find

Hair looked like I was ready to re-do my BMT

Went to this salon at a supposed-cheap $7 (cut by students) versus my normal $10 hair-cut.

It began innocently then. First thing they do is to wash your hair. The student that washed my hair did not do a great job and needless to say, did not dry my ears as well (which were literally dripping with water).

Then came the haircut by another student. Again, it began innocently and gradually, my hair level got cut higher and higher till I looked pretty ridiculous. The instructor/teacher made a comment then saying if I wanted a better haircut, I should have chosen a professional to do it. I was floored by her comment. Yet another teacher came and saved the day but by then, my hair looked like I was ready to re-do my BMT. I walked away telling myself if I ever should step in here again.

Hairstylists are quite inexperienced

KimMarie hairstylists are quite inexperienced. One of the worst haircuts I've had in my life was done by their hairdresser. But skills aside, their receptionist at the NEX branch is rude, doesn't know how to make appointments and frequently overbook, leaving customers to wait up to 4-5hours without any apologies. Their management doesn't care about customer service because their store manager is equally rude & even their headquarter manager upholds the same attitude. I get better services fr $10 haircuts fr QB house. Don't get fooled by the KimMarie cheap price! - they try to hard sell you packages of $500-1000!

KIMarie Hair Salon - Haircut for $8

Along the rather deserted Tanjong Pagar Road where sales promoters from various wedding studios eagerly pounce on unsuspecting couples venturing through the area, lies KIMarie, a hair salon and hair training centre.

Prices at the hair salon exceed our expectations as a budget couple who usually receives our haircuts for $10 and under at neighbourhood hairdressers and barbers, but we spied a good deal for a haircut at $8 in the training centre located on the second level.

Last Saturday, the two of us went on a little adventure to get our hair cut by trainees. It’s the best haircut I’ve ever gotten, and it shaved eight years from my looks. At one point, a trainee seemed to have made a mistake, but the teacher easily rectified it. It was also the first time I’ve ever had two hairdressers – one teacher and one trainee – work on my hair at the same time.

Washing of hair takes place just outside the training centre – in another room, we think – and costs an additional $1.

A haircut costs $8, a perm at $35, dye at $29, and treatment (not sure what kind of treatment) at $25. There is also an all-year round 1-for-1 offer.

Don’t expect excellent and prompt service; it is a training centre after all. But if you’re looking for something different on a small budget, this is something to try out for a Saturday afternoon.

KIMarie is located at 95 Tanjong Pagar Road. You can get there by walking a short distance from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station Exit A on Tanjong Pagar Road.

Very happy with the outcome

After she went back to office, I went to the nearby Kimarie to add a new coat of colour to my hair. Did a dye and highlight and trimmed my hair... all for the price of $11! :) Why so cheap? Cos when I coloured my hair in October last year, I received a carbon copy of the original receipt which entitles me to a 1-for-1 service the next round. For highlight, there isn't a 1-for-1, so I paid $11 for the highlight whereas the dye, trim and wash are free. Did a dark brown base and lighter blonde/brown for the highlight. Happy happy! :)

Perfectly done red head

Sat morning saw me wandering around Tanjong Pagar, lurking outside the Kimarie school of hairdressing (that what they call it??). Why? Cuz KS me was too early and the students were not there yet!

Anyways! Along with all the other aunties (yes, I was the youngest customer by about 4 decades!), I was soon settled down into a chair and the whole business of getting my hair dyed got started.

You must be wondering why I’m always getting my hair dyed by students instead of a professional salon. Well, the answer is ….. I’M BROKE! Ok lah, partly cuz of that. But seriously, their service is ok, my dyed hair gets compliments from other pro hairdressers, and my pocket loves them.  In fact, my $120 permed hair done at a renowned salon straightens after just 2 weeks! Sighs!

3 hours later, I emerged happily from the salon with a perfectly done red head. *beams*
