Advante Perm vs Tokio Sinka Perm vs MUCOTA DYNA Perm vs Shiseido Perm vs Loreal Extenso Perm: What are the differences

Published on Sep 08, 2020

Perms can be real life-changers - Unpredictable hair is set in an ideal structure, minimising both styling and maintenance. Limp-haired lovelies suddenly get body, texture and movement in their locks. The only question is - which perm is best for you?

There are numerous perm options out there, with the latest trending ones being the Advante perms available at destinations like Room Japanese Hair Salon, or the Mens' perms at establishments like Zinc Hair Salon. However, while the names may be numerous, there are only two main things which differentiate perms - The style, and the lotions.

1) Style of the Perm

The basic building blocks of every perm are the curls that are created. While these can come in a variety of shapes, stylists have made them simple to understand, using letters of the alphabet.

C-curls are just what they say on the tin - curls that are shaped like a single letter 'C'. Each lock only coils in one direction, and they are found at the ends of your hair.

The C-Curl perm adds a softening, natural finish to otherwise straight hair. Other than providing a touch of playfulness and femininity, this style is extremely flattering on bob hairstyles because the curls contour the jawline for an immediately slenderising effect. In Singapore, C-curls are often permed inwards toward the face, for a sleek, streamlined, office-ready coiff.

S Curl by Picasso Hair Studio

Volume Perm by Picasso Hair Studio

True to their title, S-Curls are curls in the shape of an 'S', meaning that the curl goes in one direction first, then the other. With more space needed to create this shape, S-Curls start closer to the root, creating a coiff with unabashedly glamorous spirals, as opposed to C-Curls which tend to be subtler. S-Curls are possibly the most volumising of the curl-shapes, great for flat lifeless hair, and for adding instant movement and energy.

J-Curls are the lesser-known sibling among the curl trio, but this doesn't mean they are any less lovely.

J Curl by Salon Vim

While they might be confused with the more gradual C-Curls, J curls have a greater emphasis on straight locks that transition quickly into an inward-curl towards the hair ends. It's a fantastic way to add texture exactly where you need it, with a balance of slickness close to the roots and vivacity nearer the tips.

Curl Combos

Stylists often mix and match curls for customised charm.

With the above model, Danson adds strategic S-curls to more subtle J-curls for lovely texturising, volumising accents to an otherwise more streamlined perm.

J+S Curls by Danson from 99 Percent Hair Studio

The same combo is used here, but with much looser and more understated curls for a neat 'do with just a hint of fun and volume.

Inward C-curls are also often added to other types of waves to cap them off with well-ordered tidiness.

The fact is that skilled stylists can work with different curl placements, sizes, shapes to create various signature looks. Japanese stylists, for example, often prioritise neatness, youthfulness and sometimes cuteness, by relying on wispier waves in smaller sections that are often towards the hair-ends. C-curls tend to prevail in their salons.

Korean stylists tend to be more generous with the size and distribution of the curls, to max out on K-drama romance vibes. S-curls make regular appearances in their establishments.

So if you are stumped as to what type of curls to go for, consider mentioning an overall style to your hairdresser so they can concoct the right curl combo for you.

2) Perm Lotions

Now we move on to an oft-neglected essential of your perm choice- the lotions. Perm is short for 'permanent', meaning your hairdo should  maintain something close to its salon-styled form for a few months after your treatment. However, some of us have experienced our curls degenerating into vague waves not even weeks after our salon visit, or keeping their coil but additionally becoming irreparably dry and frizzy.  Other than your stylists' expertise, what stops the above from happening is if the right perm lotion is chosen for your hair type and desired look. Here's a rundown on the different available lotions popular in these parts.

1. Shiseido Qurl Perm

Created by the Japanese and now manufactured in both Japan and Thailand, Shiseido's Qurl lotions were among the very first perm lotions, and were the first to be formulated especially for Asian hair. Singaporeans were properly impressed by how the lotions could permeate the our resilient shafts of hair and re-mould them into straight strands or curly locks that kept their shape for close to a year. Prices were also kept affordable, especially at Act Point Salon, which is a choice destination for beautiful, cheap and durable perms.

Shiseido Qurl Perm Lotion Available at Act Point Salon

The formula has been upgraded (such as with the introduction of hyaluronic acid) over the years but no changes have been made to its usage process: Alkaline agents in the lotion help open the hair cuticles so that Ammonium Thioglycolate can enter to break the bonds holding your hair in its current shape. After stylists use curlers to set the new, desired shape, they then use the neutraliser - the final concoction in the series of perm lotions - to fix that structure in place.

One downside of Ammonium Thioglycolate is that the PH level is relatively high (above 8), which can cause some of your cuticle cell membrane complex (the glue holding different layers of each strand neatly in place) to be lost, which in turn means that your hair could become rough and dry after a few weeks, although the damage can be limited if your stylist is good enough to time things just right. On the other hand, its strong penetrative power means that it's still a leading choice for sculpting extremely stubborn tresses, which can otherwise defeat most pther lotions out there.

Here's a quick summary of the Shiseido Qurl Perm Lotions' properties:

  • Is effective even on Virgin Asian Undamaged Hair which tends to be relatively coarse and stubborn
  • Tend to have higher damage than other perm lotions
  • Prices tend to be lower than other perm lotions.
  • Creates strong curls that last for a long time

Do however note that the Shiseido Qurl comes in 3 strengths: F1, M1 and S1. We hear that there are some less ethical hair salons who purchase the lotion in only one stregnth setting and use it across all hair types. This can result in either non-lasting effects, or overprocessing and unnecessary damage leading to dry and frizzy hair. To avoid this happening to you, avoid salons offering perming at extremely low prices, especially if they haven't received many positive reviews.

2. L'Oreal Xtenso

L'Oreal Xtenso was formulated in Europe mainly for Caucasian hair, and is more commonly used for straightening purposes, meaning that there is some level of skill needed to use it for perms.

L'Oreal Xtenso Perm Lotion for Caucasian Hair

The ingredients are not dissimilar to the abovementioned Shiseido lotions, with Ammonium Thioglycolate as a key component in the bond-breaking portion of the perm. However, the PH level in this formulation is even higher.  This means that that it's a great choice for restructuring even the most tenacious hair, such as Afro-textured locks, but the corresponding damage is also slightly elevated.

To summarise, L'Oreal Xtenso:

  • Is effective even on virgin undamaged hair, or non-virgin hair types which are very coarse and stubborn
  • Tends to have higher damage than other perm lotions
  • Has prices which tend to be lower than other perm lotions.
  • Creates strong curls that last for a long time

Having said that, this lotion also comes in different strengths: Extra Resistant, Resistant, Normal and Sensitized -  So make sure that your stylist uses the right one for your needs.

3. Goldwell Structure + Shine Perm

Originating in Germany, Goldwell offers a perm lotion that has similar properties to L'Oreal Xtenso.

Goldwell Structure + Shine Perm

The main difference however lies in the Goldwell neutralizer that is used to set the new curls. While L'Oreal Xtenso uses bromate for this purpose, Goldwell uses Hydrogen Peroxide. This tends to produce curls that less stiff and more bouncy than L'Oreal Xtenso. Also, while the cuticle-opening solution is strong, with a PH level above 8, Goldwell has also infused its concoction with treatment ingredients such as amino acids, kukui nut oil and lipids to repair some of the inevitable hair damage.

So, Goldewell Structure + Shine:

  • Is effective even on virgin undamaged hair, or non-virgin hair which is very coarse and stubborn
  • Has some of its damage mitigated by treatment ingredients
  • Creates curlsthat  look bouncier than L'Oreal Xtenso, which is great for those looking for less suble waves
  • Creates strong curls that last for a long time

Goldwell comes in different strengths: Extra Resistant, Resistant, Normal and Sensitized. Again, make sure your stylist uses the best suited to your hair history and condition.

4. Maximum Auto-Clock Perm from South Korea

Originating from South Korea, the Maximum Perm also uses thioglycolates to break hair bonds, but modifies the way this substance delivered to your hair. Specifically, it offers what it calls Micro Gelation technology.

Maximum Auto-Clock Perm from South Korea

The thioglycoate is contained in a micro-gel so that when the perm lotion is applied, the hydrolyzed silk proteins are the first ingredient to be in contact with the hair, and will act to pre-emptively repair damage before the other ingredients open the hair cuticles.

Maximum Auto-Clock Perm from South Korea

The words 'Auto-Clock' are also included in the product name because of the lotion's ion-balancing technology, that means certain ingredients are formulated to automatically lose their damaging properties after a certain amount of time, limiting any hair damage that might occur even if your stylist leaves the lotion on for too long.

Like with the Goldwell lotions, hydrogen peroxide are also used in the neutraliser, to allow for more defined, bouncier curls.

In short, Maximum Auto-Clock:

  • Is good for Virgin Undamaged Hair or non-virgin hair which is stubborn and coarse
  • Creates curls that look bouncier and more defined
  • Causes lower damage than other perm lotions that use thioglycolates thanks to their micro gelation technology
  • Creates strong curls that last for a long time
  • May be less affordable than certain other lotions because of its extensively reesarched tech.

Maximum also comes in different strengths: Normal, Strong and Resistant.

5. Arimino Cosme

For those with a preference for perms that are understated and loose instead of strongly pronounced, Japanese company Arimino came up with a new perm formulation - Arimino Cosme.

Arimino Cosme

Instead of using the alkaline agents and Ammonium Thioglycolate to break your hair's natural bonds, Arimino Cosme uses Ammonia and Cysteamine. This combination creates more natural, looser waves, and doesn't open the cuticles and damage the cell membrane complex as much as ammonium thioglycolate. While the pH-level is still between 8.5 to 8.8 - meaning some form of damage to the cuticle cell membrane complex will occur - Arimino Cosme also treatment ingredients to repair the damage.

A quick summary of its characteristics:

  • It's effective even on virgin undamaged hair and other stubborn hair types
  • It's lower damage than the above perm lotions
  • Prices tend to be higher than above perm lotions
  • It creates looser, softer curls that look more natural but may not be as durable
  • No pungent odour from Ammonium Thioglycolate

Arimino Cosme also comes in 3 strengths: V, EX and H.

While appreciating their lowered damage, some people groused that using perm lotions with Cysteamine produces curls that are less durable than they'd like. Accordingly, MUCOTA created a fusion of traditional Ammonium Thioglycolate with Cysteamine.

MUCOTA Perm Lotion

MUCOTA DYNA was born, combining the bond-breaking efficacy of Ammonium Thioglycolate with the relative gentleness of Cysteamine, and boasting a lower PH level of between 7.5-8.6. This results in curls that are looser and more natural but which last for quite a few months. It's also the first perm lotion to include numerous treatment ingredients, such as collagen, silk, argan oil and jojoba oil, helping to noticeably soften tresses despite the perm process.

Here's a quick summary of its characteristics:

  • Suitable even for moderately damaged hair
  • Lower damage than the above perm lotions
  • No pungent odour from Ammonium Thioglycolate
  • Creates loose, understated curls
  • Includes collagen, silk, 18-MEA, ceramide, argan oil and jojoba oil as treatment ingredients

An important note: MUCOTA DYNA lotion is actually more often used for straightening than perming, as the curls from the latter tend to be loose - though if you like that natural look, be assured that those loose curls retain their shape well for around two months, before loosening further within the 3-4th month.

For those who prefer more distinct and durable curls, MUCOTA innovated the MUCOTA SNB 3 - also called MUCOTA Omega in Singapore. This lotion uses a combination of Thioglycolic acid and acetylcysteine to create stronger curls while still balancing out the damage with ample treatment ingredients. To summarise, it's:

  • Suitable even for moderately damaged hair
  • More damaging than DYNA, but provides a trade-off in longer lasting, distinct curls
  • Lower damage compared to Shiseido Perms or L'Oreal Xtenso

7. Naturia Hybrid Perm

The popular Keratin Treatment from Milan has recently gained popularity in Korea. Although primarily still a keratin treatment, we hear that naturia is able to somewhat combine the keratin treatment with traditional perm lotion in what is called a hybrid perm.

To be honesty, we aren't exactly sure what the reducing agent is but we do know that it includes also quite of bit of treatment e.g. Arginine within. It is able to to create loose natural curls, inflicts lower damage than above perm lotions and includes mild treatment properties.

While Naturia perm lotions are less common in Singapore, LeeKaJa Hair & Beauty Salon and Be Salon @ Millenia Walk has been known to carry them.

8. Tokio de Sinka Perm

Tokio de Sinka has completely transofrmed the conventional three-step perm process to expressly focus on minimising damage. Instead of perm lotion being the first thing applied to your crown, Tokio de Sinka includes a pre-treatment stage using Tokio Inkarami 0, a formulation containing keratins and amino acids to repair existing hair damage and strengthen locks before application of perm lotion.

Like most perm formulations out there, they also provide different strength selections catering to different tress types and damage levels. Some of their lotions have pH levels as low as 6.7, thus opening the cuticles only very slightly and minimising hair trauma.

After application of the perm lotion, the next Tokio Inkarami step is to apply yet another treatmentm this one containing Fullerene - a class of carbon molecules which won their discoverers the Nobel prize. This patented ingredient acts as an antioxidant that is up to 175x stronger than Vitamin C in removing active oxygen and therefore protecting against excessive UV damage. It also protects against oxidation and cuticle damage, reducing the damage from the perm even further.

That's not all. After the entire perm is over, the stylist is expected to finish with an application of Tokio 4M Inkarami, containing 13 types of vegetable oils, ceramide and 18MEA to form a protective barrier around each hair strand, so the hair remains soft and smooth after the perm. Some customers find their hair even looks healthier than before.

  • It has a fragrant lemongrass scent with no pungent odour of Ammonium Thioglycolate
  • It's causes the lowest hair damage among various perms thus far
  • It's more pricey as it includes pre-perm and post-perm treatments in its process
  • Takes a longer time in the salon because of its extra protective steps

9. Advante Perm

Advante perm products just arrived in Singapore less than a month ago and are already being hailed as a game-changer. A true 2-in-1 treatment and perm lotion, Advante Perm replaces traditional bond-breakers like thioglycolic acids and Cysteamine with glyceryl mono thioglycolate, or GMT for short. Unlike Thio which works only at high pH, GMT is able to penetrate the hair even at low pH.

Advante Perm PH Value

This means that the cuticles are not only unopened, the lotion even imitates mildly acidic treatment products and closes the cuticles further for smoother strands. The damage is further reduced when used with the special Paimore Grats perming machine, which can set curls in place in temperatures as low as 50 degrees Celsius, compared to the traditional 180 degrees.

Low Damage Advante Perm at Act Point Salon

Advante perm by Act Point Salon

The low damage and strong curling effect of this perm means that it works on damaged hair, which usually would either be reduced to a crisp under traditional high-damage perms, or not curl substantially under gentler perms. Beauty Undercover has witnessed its jaw-dropping effects on fine hair that was previously bleached!

This allows talented stylists to serves up curls that range from subtle and loose to defined and dramatic depending on your 'do desires. More importantly, they use deionised water that will close your hair cuticles even more tightly, resulting in noticeable smoothness and sheen.

Advante Movement Perm by Chez Vous

Why? Well, Avante's lotions replace traditional bond-breaking ingredients like thioglycolates or cysteamine (which require the cuticles to be opened using alkaline components)  with a deionising water technology. This means that your hair's moisture and health are almost perfectly preserved.

In case you haven't heard of Erucalactone, that's because most of the world hasn't either. It's a patented, plant-derived ingredient, typically only found in the latest premium Japanese beauty products. While heat can harm hair, this compound is actually heat-activated to increase nutrient penetration and improve elasticity and volume, while also repairing colour damage as well as the UV damage so prevalent in sunny Singapore.

Advante perms are currently the lowest damage perms in the world which can also provide defined curls, even for heavily damaged locks.

After Advante Perm at The Urban Aesthetics

Despite how damaged her hair was with previous perm and bleach, Beauty Emporium by The Urban Aesthetics was able to successfully give her frizz-free curls she has always wanted with Advante Perm.

A summary of things to consider when considering an Advante perm:

  • It works even on damaged hair
  • It has a fragrant woody scent with no pungent odour of Ammonium Thioglycolate
  • It's the lowest damage perm in the world, which can still provide defined curls of reasonable durability
  • It's more pricey because of premium ingredients and technology
  • It takes a shorter time in the salon because treatment ingredients are included in the perm process

DIfferent perm lotions fit different needs. Have extremely stubborn strands and a lower budget? Good old Shiseido Qurl or L'Oreal Xtenso may need to be deployed. Have damaged hair that needs gentle treatment, but want super defined curls? Consider the Advante. Have damaged hair and a higher budget, but less time to go back to the salon for repeat visits? Consider the MUCOTA DYNA, or some of the other kinder options.

For best results, consult your stylist - An expert should be able to not just choose the right perm lotions, but even mix and match them for different sections of hair, at different stages, to achieve optimum results.

Of course, to best help your hairdresser help you, it is crucial to tell them your hair history, including what types of chemical services you've done previously, and when. This allows the stylist to gauge which part of your tresses might need more or less of a certain ingredient. For example, if  rebonding has been done 6 months previously, the 6 inches of hair closest to the roots are likely to be virgin hair that might need stronger handling, and the remaining tresses previously treated hair that might need customised and gentler care.

Once they have all the relevant information, they'll be best equipped to customise the perfect bespoke perm for you.
