Hi, my name is Agent ES. I'm originally Korean but found love in Singapore with an incredibly nice man and even had twins with him.
I'm not just a Stay-at-home Mom though. During those pockets of time when my children go to school, I'll indulge in my passion and work: painting.
I paint all sorts of things I see on a daily basis from
and more recently, roses.
When I'm feeling inspired, I'll even ask my trusted stylist to see how I can have similar prints or design on my hair. It is not easy to find a stylist who can cater to my every demand so I count myself lucky to find Shua from Koinonia Salon.
I hit it off with Shua almost immediately, partially because she is Korean, who married to a Singaporean and partially because she has a heart of an artist. Not someone to blindly follow trends, Shua has a strong sense of aesthetics and technical skill that enables her to recommend just the right service for my hair, every single time. She is also very open to ideas; whenever something strikes me, I'll message her and she'll think of a way to make my vision come to life.
Despite being in Singapore, I still manage to keep ahead of trends in Korea, thanks to Shua.
That includes getting my hair bleached and permed the last time.
Although the colour has faded by now, it was pretty fun to experience what all those young ladies in their 20s are doing.
As I've been having the same hairstyle for months, I was wondering if it was time to go for a change.
Coincidentally, Shua asked if I was keen to come by for a hair service and share my experience at Koinonia Salon in that same week, so I did!
Koinonia Salon moved to their new location in Tiong Bahru a few months ago and I'm very happy they did so. There are not many places in Singapore with so much nostalgia and history left so Tiong Bahru is certainly a special place to be in. Most importantly though, their newly renovated salon is so cozy and beautifully decorated, I look forward to each visit there.
It's not just the exterior that looks good.
The interior is spacious and comfortable as well.
The moment I enter, I'm welcomed by the smiling receptionist who escorted me into one of these seats. They even have my name on the side table; that just shows me how detailed and attentive they are to their service.
Shua came over and check my hair texture as we discussed about my next hairstyle. I shared with her that I've been in love with roses lately and have been drawing roses nonstop.
Could she perhaps design a hairstyle or give me a perm that had hints of a rose?
After thinking it through, Shua suggests an outward C curl perm she coined "Rose Perm" that is elegant yet easy to maintain. This is a very popular perm among ladies raised in Chaebol families because it makes ladies look elegant and put together all the time.
I've never tried this perm before although I do see it featured on some celebrities in dramas... so why not?
As my hair has been previously bleached and permed, Shua suggested using the newest Paimore GRATS Perm as it is incredibly low-damage and will make sure that my hair still looks healthy afterwards.
Whatever you say, Shua, you're the professional and you know I trust you!
I was first brought to the basin for a very comfortable and thorough hair wash.
Back at the seat, Shua blew dry my hair till its semi-dry before proceeding to the next step.
Shua didn't start with a haircut as I wanted to keep my length and also because she felt that it would be more precise to trim it after the perm.
She measured exactly the right amounts for the chemical, mixed and then applied it to my hair.
Just like hair, art requires a lot of precision, structure and science for the end result to look good. Hence, I really appreciate that about Shua.
After application of perm lotion, she puts a layer of cling wrap around my hair. She also tied a small section of hair around the green roller.
Shua explains that the cling wrap will help accelerate penetration of the lotion while rolling a small section of the hair up helps her assess if my hair is sufficiently softened. This is necessary for Paimore GRATS as the technology for this perm is totally different from traditional perm lotions!
To further accelerate the process, low heat is applied.
While the heat was being applied, the staff was also very kind to provide me with some snacks from the eateries around.
Really appreciate their consideration!
After 10 minutes or so, Shua came by to check and found that my hair seems to be ready for processing.
She removed the roller and the cling wrap before her assistant escorted me to the hair wash area to clear away the perm lotion.
If you've been wondering where my twins are throughout this entire process, they were actually playing at a small play area at the back of the salon.
There are a few toys and books, which kept them occupied thus far.
This is another reason why I love Koinonia Salon. The salon is very children-friendly and the staff are always keen to help out with the children where necessary.
Back at the seat, Shua began trimming my hair to achieve the style she was thinking about.
She cut my hair when it was wet.
Blew my hair dry
And trim it again.
To make sure that this perm ends up more easily manageable, Shua ironed my hair to get rid of any kinks my natural hair texture may have.
When my hair is made straighter yet still voluminous, she embarked on the next stage of the perm: curling.
She clipped up some parts of the hair and sectioned it well so that the C curls can be more obviously seen.
Slowly but surely, the rollers started piling up.
Until it looked like this!
When it was all done, my hair was connected to a machine to heat up the rollers.
I had to wait for another 10 minutes or so.
Once it was removed, the curls looked like this:
Don't you think they somehow look like roses?
Unfortunately, Shua has to straighten away some of the "roses" to make sure it doesn't look too curly afterwards.
Now that the top part of the hair is straigthened, I can see the C curl forming more obviously.
What do you think?
To set the perm, neutralizer was applied with a spray.
"Mommy mommy, are you done yet?"
Almost done, my darling.
Just one more hair wash!
Blowdrying with just the hands... (no straightener or stylers)
and we are almost done!
Do you remember how my hair looked before?
And now, after!
What do you think?
This hairstyle certainly looks a lot more elegant than my previous one. The curls are more structured and neater because of the straightened roots. Yet the hair itself still looks voluminous and bouncy thanks to the curled hair ends.
Doesn't it remind you of rose fields at the back as well?
Shua mentioned that this perm is very easy to manage as I just need to use twist my hands outward while blowdrying and the curls will form.
As usual, I had a great time again at Koinonia. I went in hoping to see if we can incorporate my latest obsession into my hair and she exceeded my expectations with this Rose Perm. The curls are super bouncy and exudes much more elegance than before with the neater and more structured curls.
Back at home, it was also very easy to manage; all I need to do is to apply some curling cream, blow my hair dry and the curls will look exactly what what it looks at the salon.
Thank you Shua for always accommodating my requests and putting in so much effort into my hair!
I'm very grateful to have met you and explore so many different looks I didn't know I could carry off.
Looking forward to my next visit with you and can't wait to see what we will come up together next.
