Scroll through the IG of your favourite celebrities and you'll be hard pressed to find one who hasn't sported the effortlessly chic beach waves.
As its name suggests, beach waves emulates the hairstyle you get at the beach - the perfect combination of polished and casual achieved via air-drying your hair at sunny beaches. The main reason why it is so popular is because it is universally flattering. Suiting almost every cut, beach waves adds volume onto limp and fine hair.
But how do you even get it, in the first place?
We check with stylists at Koinonia Salon for tips on how to achieve these beach waves the easiest way possible.
If your hair is already naturally not super straight (e.g. a little wavy), consider prepping your hair at night for overnight beach waves. All you have to do is to wash your hair at night, wait till your hair is 90% dry and then make a regular braid with 3 sections. Don't tie it too tight... or else there may not be enough volume at the top. Leave about 4-5cm of hair at the ends before securing it with a rubber band. FYI, it is important for the hair to be a little wet as hair cuticles must be slightly open for it to be resculpted into the new wavy shape temporarily, so yes it wouldn't work if your hair is 100% dry.
All you have to do the next morning is to remove the rubber band and shape your hair from the roots.
It may not work for everyone as it depends on whether your hair is fine enough to create and retain the shape from your braid but this no-damage method is definitely worth a try.
If you want more control over the waves, consider using a curling iron. Section your hair and then run the curling iron through to get that fabulous loose wave.
For those who are more comfortable with flat iron, you can also create beach waves with one. In fact, some even find flat iron waves look even better than a curling iron!
If you don't have time to prep your hair for an overnight beach wave or curl your hair for 10 minutes every morning, the easiest fuss-free way to get your beach waves is possibly to go for a beach wave perm.
This perm can transform your naturally wavy hair to the beach waves of your dreams without requiring you to wake up 30 minutes earlier to prep your hair or worry about styling right before bed.
Yet, it adds a chic that gets people looking.
Want to know how it's done? We follow Agent XW for her first Beach Waves Perm at Koinonia Salon.
Hi, I'm Agent XW, and I work in logistics.
Don't think that I'm easy to bully because I look so feminine with long hair.
At work, I like to look a little fiercer so that my colleagues will take me seriously.
When I look so 女人 (feminine), it can be difficult to get people to listen to me.
On the other hand, I'm not keen to go too short. Very mafan, right?
Is there a hairstyle that makes me look edgy with a bit more personality... without losing too much femininity at the same time?
I finally got an answer, this time from Fion, a hairstylist friend of mine who works at Koinonia Salon. To be honest, I usually go to JB because the price is much lower but the pandemic has forced me to relook at options in Singapore.
I know there's no one who would understand me and my hair better so I made an appointment with Fion to see what I can do.
I was lost the first time I went to Koinonia Salon. Somehow I walked past the salon even without realizing it because... the entrance just didn't look like a hair salon.
With its pastel colours and beautiful decor, I almost thought that it was a nail shop or a cafe.
More surprises lay behind the door; with the vintage furniture and the special patterned bricks, Koinonia Salon looked really retro and homey.
Seeing me walk through the door, Fion waved at me excitedly and escorted me to the seat.
I was surprised to see a customised nameplate to mark my seat.
Wah, did you do this just for me?
Apparently, it wasn't because I was her friend. HAHA.. Koinonia Salon prepares this for every customer. Now that's a level of detail and attention I haven't received from a salon before.
Fion may be my friend but the hair service was no less professional. She started the appointment with a consultation.
Understanding how i wanted to add an edge into my hairstyle without losing too much femininity, the brilliant Fion suggested a beach wave perm.
Knowing that I like more angmoh-style curls, she showed me a few photos of the beach waves she's thinking about.
The curls will definitely be tighter than what I have now and start higher but she's using the low-damage Advante Perm which should loosen out and give me the beach waves like the above.
Knowing that I want a more edgy look, she also suggested to have the beach waves a little shorter - at around chest length.
Okay with that, she proceeded with the next step: haircut.
Time for the chop.
She cut about 2-3 inches off and then created the requisite layers for the beach waves perm.
Once the cut was complete, it was time to apply perm lotion.
Fion applied the perm lotion thoroughly to my hair before wrapping my head in a cling wrap to trap heat and speed up processing.
She also applied mild heat with the machine and 15 minutes later, it was time to start the perm.
Fion sectioned my hair and started curling my hair from the bottom.
She then rolled my hair with small rollers from ends to roots.
And proceeded to do it to the rest of my hair!
It's about to get crazier.
Fion connected each roller to a clip that would heat up the roller.
This way, the hair would get heated up without causing my scalp, neck, or ears to feel hot.
After 30 minutes of waiting with that alien contraption, Fion switched the machine off and left my hair to cool for another 5-10 minutes.
Next, it was time to remove the rollers.
One by one, they came off and my hair sprang into tight aunty curls.
Of course, that's not the final style. Fion washed my hair to loosen the curls and achieve the end perm style.
This is how my hair looks back at the seat!
For the curls to look good, Fion suggested to use a diffuser as it keeps the curls in shape and helps to reduce frizz.
When the hair is about 80% dry, Fion says that I can then put on curling lotion and scrunch up the hair for more definition.
Ready to see the final look?
Is it me... or do I look a bit more "bad-girl" now with the slightly shorter hair?
Compared to the longer hair, I certainly looked and feel more stylish than before.
It looks good too, from the side or the back.
Fion says that I can even consider putting on some hair accessories if I wish.
Now, do you think that I look more chic and edgy than before?
Thank you Fion and Koinonia Salon for the awesome Beach Wave Perm.
