Best Lash Extension Style for Every Asian Eye Shape

Published on Jun 06, 2019

There are lots of reasons to love eyelash extensions! For one,  you wake up with beautiful lashes and don't need to spend a lot of time to maintain them as long as you are careful while washing your face. Beyond convenience though, the best lash extensions enhance how your eyes look by balancing their quirks and bringing out their best.

We talk to Japanese eye-lists Aya from Flamingo Hair Studio and Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon to see how they match lash extensions with different eye shapes for best results.

It is important to note that there are a lot of factors to consider when you get eyelash extensions. Though your eye shape is possibly the biggest thing to consider, you should also think about your eyelash condition, how fast your lashes grow, and even your face shape. Without further ado, here are the experts' tips based on your eye shape ...

1. The Almond Eye

Congratulations if you've got the Almond Eye. That eye shape is arguably one of the most attractive and "perfect" eye shape among Asian eyes. The double lid is obvious and reveals more of the eye ie. the pupils and the whites.

Recommended Lash Extension: Natural

With the eye shape considered perfect, Aya from Flamingo Hair Studio would recommend a natural lash extension.

As its name suggests, this style mimics the natural lashes. They follow the contours of your natural lashes and have a consistent length along your eyelids. The focus instead is to add volume and length for that extra pizzazz... simply because you can carry it off well!

2. Phoenix Eye

Widely recognized as one of the most attractive eye shapes for Asian ladies, the Phoenix Eye is slightly upturned with a medium eyelid crease that brings out the pupils and whites of the eye. The eye size itself is not large but tends to be a little elongated, making it look more seductive, somewhat like a Phoenix (which is why it is named the Phoenix Eye)

Recommended Lash Extension: Natural or Doll Eyes

The eye shape is pretty much very sought after so if you want to retain that, Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon recommends a Natural Lash extension shape which has a consistent length along the eyelid to brighten the eye.

Alternatively, you can try the Doll Eye. This style is characterized by length right across the eyeline with the longest lashes being focused on the middle of the eye.

The longer lashes in the middle will make the eye appear bigger and fuller in the middle to make it look more almond-shaped.

3. Round Eyes

Round eyes may not be as highly ranked as almond eyes but they come a close second. Ladies with round eyes tend to have much of their pupil seen. The eyes tend to look bigger than usual and hence, give the impression that they are more alert. However, they are seen to be relatively less delicate or gentle.

Recommended Lash Extension: Cat Eye

To taper off the roundness of the eyes, Aya from Flamingo Hair Studio recommends cat eye extensions that drag the eyes up and out. It lengthens the round eye to make it look more almond-shaped and gives a more sultry look.

4. Small Round Eyes

Small round eye shape

Similar to round eyes, small round eyes are smaller. You can see a lot more of the whites of the eye but because the size is smaller, the overall balance of the face is affected. While the person still looks alert, the eye doesn't look as delicate or as charming.

Recommended Lash Extension: Natural Eye

As the round eye still looks good, Aya from Flamingo Hair Studio  recommends a Natural Lash Extension shape which has a consistent length along the eyelid to brighten the eye. Going for a longer length will make it more obvious without being too over the top. The focus instead is to use the curlier CC or L curl to open up the eyes even more.

Recommended Lash Extension: Cat Eye

The recommended lash extension is once again the Cat Eye arrangement to lift the outer of the eye visually. Longer lashes are put on the outer corner and shorter on the inner corner. This reduces the appearance of the 3 points for a more almond-shaped look that is considered more attractive.

5. Triangular Eyes

Triangular eyes

As its name suggests, triangular eyes have more obvious 3 points in the eye, resulting in a more triangular look. This may happen naturally or when you get older as the outer area of the eye begins to sag.

Recommended Lash Extension: Natural Eye

You might think that it's a good idea to go for an extravagant eyelash extension design to balance out your eyes, but because most designs are thicker in the middle and outer corners. The triangular shape will be further emphasized. It is hence, best to go for a natural shape that will enhance instead of hide your eye shape.

6. Downturned Eyes

Downturned eyes

Downturned eyes have a slight dropping on the outer corners. This is the perfect shape for creating a sexy cat’s eye shape. "Apply a liquid liner along the top lid and extend outward and upward at a 45 degree angle," says Jeffrey. This effect will create symmetry and add va-va-voom!

7. Upturned Eyes

Upturned eyes

The outer corners of the eye are higher than the inner corners. This tends to make the person look brigther and more alert. However, it does give the impression that he/she is a little more serious and is not as friendly.

Recommended Lash Extension: Open Eye

This style works well with your shape by adding more volume to the center of your eyes, attention will then be turned to your 'open eyes' and long lashes, not the lifted sides of your eyes.

If you want to try something quirky, consider adding a coloured extension at the ends to add warmth to this cool eye shape.

8. Close Set Eyes

Close Set Eye Shape

Close-set eyes refer to eyes that are less than one eyeball width apart. As the eyes look a little too close, the person tends to look too intense, serious and even slightly depressive.

Recommended Lash Extension: Cat Eye

Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon recommends the Cat Eye arrangement to "pull" the eyes further apart. Close set eyes benefit from emphasizing the outer corners of the eyes where you can go for longer and heavier lashes to draw attention away from inner corners of the eye.

9. Wide Set Eyes

Wide shaped eyes

Wide-set eyes refer to eyes that are more than one eyeball width apart. As the eyes are separated a little far apart, it tends to make the face look wider and the proportion out of balance.

Recommended Lash Extension: Reverse Cat Eye

Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon recommends the Reverse Cat Eye arrangement to create the illusion they are closer together than what they actually are. In the reverse cat eye, the longer lashes are applied in the inner corners of the eye and shorter lashes on the outer corners.

This is challenging even for typical lash therapists as it is opposite to what they're usually trained. If done well, however, the lashes look amazing as Kim Kardashian and J.Lo can tell you.

10. Long and Narrow Monolids

Long and narrow monolids tend to make the eyes look smaller as they show less of the eyeball and give the impression that the person has less energy. They tend not to have an obvious upper crease as well.

Recommended Lash Extension: Open Eye

Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon recommends the open eye style. This makes the person look more energetic as more volume and length is added to the center of your eyes with symmetrically tapered sides.

11. Small Hooded Eyes

Small hooded eyes don't have eyes as long as that of long and narrow monolids. You may even have a little of a crease that is sometimes present but the weight of your eyelids can often press down or hide your lashes, making your eyes look smaller than they actually are. It's difficult to put on makeup as you have to try very hard to define your eyes and barely visible eyelashes.

Even with the help of mascara and eyeliner, it might be difficult because the former will just stain your lids while the latter will be hidden by them. Tough, we know...because 50% of us Southeast Asian women have this eye shape!

The solution? Doll eye extensions

A cross between the natural and open eye styles, the Doll Eye is characterized by length right across the eyeline with the longest lashes being focused on the middle of the eye. This helps to lift the middle part of the eye and make it appear larger while balancing the outer corner of the eye to give the illusion that it is at a similar height to the inner corner.

The solution? Open eye extensions

Similar to long and narrow monolids, Aya from Flamingo Hair Studio  recommends the open eye style. Longer length in the middle will emphasize the eye and make it appear rounder and bigger. However, she doesn't recommend putting on too many lashes as it can weigh down the existing lashes and make the eyes appear smaller. Hence, she recommends fewer lashes with a stronger curl that emphasize the middle of the eye.

Agent G went for a lash extension at Flamingo Hair Studio where she got an open-eye lash extension style. Short of going for eyelid surgery, the lashes certainly made her eyes look rounder and bigger.

12. Protruding Eyes

Usually, those with protruding eyes have a round eye shape, making them look very wide. It can be nice when they make you look wide awake, but sometimes, it makes you look shocked or like you're constantly staring at something. If your lashes are short, having your eyes sitting far out on your face further highlights that.

Recommended Lash Extensions: Cat Eye

Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon shares that as your eyes are large and round already, you do not need to go for open eye styles. Subdue the look of a protruding eye with a softer natural B or J curl lash extension as well as a cat eye lash extension to elongate the eye rather than opening it further.

14. Deep Set Eyes

More commonly seen in Westerners, deep set eyes recede deeper into the eye sockets and make one look more mature. While the eye shape can look charming and tend to be quite large, it can make one look more tired as one ages.

Recommended Lash Extensions: Doll Eye

Akiko from Allumer Japanese Beauty Salon shares that the shape of this eye is already quite desirable. Hence, natural or doll eye lash extension would be perfect. The key instead is to choose the right curl, specifically astronger curl on this eye to give it some lift. It is not recommended to add too much volume here as it may weigh down the eye when the intention really is to prevent the eye from receding into the socket.

As much as we can read about the best lash extension style for our eye shape, we still depend heavily on our lash eye-list to customize the length and the exact shape to our eyes. After all, most of our eyes are asymmetrical.

What happens if you have a long and narrow monolid on one side and hooded eyelid on the other like Agent G?

Your eye-list will have to tailor a difference in length and even lash volume to make the final lash extension look balanced.
