Eyebrow embroidery has been gaining in popularity over the past decade with eyebrow embroidery shops opening left right and centre in the heartlands.
Many of these salons are staffed by Chinese brow artists, some of whom are skillful while others are less so.
We sent Agent S to get her eyebrows done by Celebrity Brow Artist Cecilia Chng at Follicle Salon. Cecilia has done makeup for top celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Kimora Lee and is highly demanded among socialites in Singapore. She is however best known for her eyebrow embroidery and makeup!
Whether you're intending to do an eyebrow embroidery or if you've just done one, we hope that this experience of hers can give you a better idea of what you should expect from an eyebrow embroidery session
Hi I'm Agent S, a Financial Consultant with Prudential.
Appearance is important to me, even before I became an insurance agent.
No, I don't think that one has to look like a model all the time but I do believe that it is my responsibility to look presentable and professional so that clients can trust me and listen to what I would like to share.
So yes, I do put on bsaic makeup (foundation, mascara, lipstick) each time I go out.
The most tricky step of the makeup routine is to me the drawing of my eyebrows. You see, I've had a love-hate relationship with my eyebrows since I was a teenager. My eyebrows have a naturally high arch that made me look angry constantly. I therefore learned to pluck my own eyebrows since secondary school. Maybe because I keep plucking them, I found that there are areas under my brows that never seem to grow out hairs anymore.
When I try to change my eyebrow shape through drawing, I found it really difficult because the empty areas just look so unnatural.
I turned to Youtube video tutorial for advice but watching these Youtubers draw their eyebrows for 10-20 minutes a day made me pause... is there an easier and faster way to get my eyebrows drawn?
I was therefore thrilled when Agent G invited me to get my eyebrows embroidered by well-known brow artist Cecilia Chng. She is so famous that when I mentioned to my sister about getting my eyebrow embroidery done at Ngee Ann City, she asked if I was going to get it done by Cecilia Chng!
I made the appointment on a weekday afternoon.
The eyebrow embroidery area is located within Follicle Salon. Agent G was raving about how effective the scalp treatments for one of her best friends, Agent A.
Would definitely like to try that if I have the chance next time!
Today, though, its all about my eyebrows.
The receptionist Allan greeted me warmly the moment I entered and gave me a consultation form for me to fill in.
He then escorted me to a private room where I was asked to remove my existing eyebrow makeup.
This is how my eyebrows look like, bare.
Very thin right?
I often have to spend quite a bit of time to draw it and make it look good.
Soon, the famed Cecilia entered with her flawless hair and chic getup.
She was very friendly, introducing herself to me before checking on my eyebrows.
Your brows actually look OK :) I'll make it just slightly thicker and fill in the gaps so that it can better accentuate your beautiful features. I'll also design the new brow so that the arch is less obvious; it brings out your youth better this way!Let me show you what I mean?
With that, she shaped my eyebrows.
First with a scissors...
Then with a shaving knife.
She then very precisely draw my eyebrows. She does so by making various markings on the eyebrow.
She then uses a ruler to determine where the arch should be and where the brow should end.
Cecilia proceeds with drawing the eyebrow.
No matter how experienced an eyebrow artist is, Cecilia mentions that there is a chance of parallax error. That is why she chooses to be more thorough for every single customer and use the most precise way of drawing eyebrows.
A final check from her to make sure that the eyebrows are balanced.
She showed me what her eyebrow shape would look like, barring the markings she made previously and it looked good!
Hence, we proceeded with the eyebrow embroidery.
Before the eyebrow embroidery process begins, a numbing cream is applied.
Cecilia explained that this is the localised anaesthesia which would minimize any pain later on.
After the numbing cream is applied, Cecilia invites me to lie on a bed while the numbing cream takes effect.
About 20 minutes later, Cecilia comes back into the room to remove the numbing cream.
She then begins the process of eyebrow embroidery by using a specialized blade to create the eyebrow design.
Dark brown pigment is then applied over the cuts to achieve the desired colour.
After completing the design on one side, she moves on to another.
Yes, there is bleeding during the process.
Even for someone with low tolerance of pain, the level of pain is low and manageable. I can feel the blade more on the top edge of my brow more than at other areas but it generally feels more like an ant bite.
When the first attempt was complete, Cecilia removes the ink and checks the eyebrow.
Like the perfectionist artist she is, Cecilia applies the secondary numbing cream again and went for a second round to ensure that all the ink has penetrated.
Even though the time check increases the length of time taken for an eyebrow embroidery, it allows her to make sure that the design is flawless and that the eyebrow embroidery lasts for a long time.
This may be a reason why most of her customers go back to her for a subsequent eyebrow embroidery only after 1 to 2 years!
Cecilia then gave me a mirror to see if I was happy with the design.
Yes Yes Yes!
One last application of the antiseptic cream and I'm done!
Here's how my brows look like now:
Its a tad bit dark but still looked natural!
Cecilia also mentioned that it will lighten over time. The complimentary retouch in the next 3 months will therefore be useful to keep the brow looking perfect for the next 1-2 years.
Thank you Cecilia for the beautiful brows!
I am elated to have the chance to try Cecilia for my first eyebrow embroidery. I've always walked past eyebrow embroidery shops in the heartlands but am afraid to try because some of them looked really dodgy.
The experience at Follicle Salon was however amazing. The place felt luxurious and hygienic. There is only bed in Follicle so the experience felt very exclusive. It also gave Cecilia the ability to better focus on each individual customer, which is something I really appreciated. There was a little bit of bleeding but Cecilia's decades of experience was so good that the process was almost painless and looks absolutely natural... not many people knew I did eyebrow embroidery afterwards. I almost slept if not for the slight discomfort due to pressure exerted around the eye during the cutting process.
The end result turned out exactly like I hoped: the well-shaped beautiful and neater eyebrows that made it so much easier to manage every morning.
It doesn't mean I don't need to draw my eyebrows though. I can leave my house looking good with the eyebrow embroidery but I still do a tiny bit of drawing to lengthen the ends and smoothen the edges.
Less time on makeup means more time for my clients and the people I love.
For those of you struggling with drawing your eyebrows, I would highly recommend you to try eyebrow embroidery by Cecilia. Her waiting list is more than two weeks but the wait is more than worth it, considering the time you save, her decades of experience and beautiful brow embroidery skills! She also offers a complimentary touch up 2-3 months later to help prolong your brow embroidery and adjust it to the ideal shape you're looking for.
Whether you decide to try Cecilia or not, we hope that the above benchmark eyebrow embroidery lets you know exactly what you should expect from the service!
Let us know if your experience differs from what Agent S experience above!
