Hands up... Who tried to dye their hair during the COVID-19 Circuit Breaker last year?
Given that salons were only doing haircuts and that we had so much time on our hands, many of us tried our hands at hair colouring after watching hair tutorials on Youtube and Tiktok.
Isn't it super satisfying to know that you can DIY your hair and look just like Jennie?
The best part is that you don't have a know-it-all stylist to tell you what colour you can or cannot carry off... or worry about the price at the end of the hair service because you can bleach as many times as you want to get the hair colour you desire.
You can even do a tiktok video of the process and share it with the world.
But what happens when your hair colour wasn't what you intended it to be?
You may not realize it but the colour you see on the box is not the hair colour you get at the end of the day. It does not take into account your hair type, condition and colour at the time of application, so it is a mere approximation of what you could possibly get.
For lighter colours that require bleaching, things get rapidly more complex. If it is your first time bleaching, you may find that the process is pretty challenging; how much to apply and how long should you apply the bleach for? After bleaching, how can you apply the colour evenly?
It is not uncommon to see patchy hair colour fails as people often miss some spots at the back of the head during the DIY hair colour.

Worse, you may find your hair becoming brittle and falling off if your hair is not strong enough to withstand the many times of bleaching.
As bleaching powder can be very harsh, DIY bleaching can sting your scalp, leaving you with itchy, red and even swollen bald patches on your scalp for years.
If you still intend to try DIY hair colour though, there is one thing we would advise you NOT to do:
The process of colouring your hair black is easy but regret that decision and you'll find reversing that really, really difficult.
As Agent J found out, it can take 3-5 times of bleach or an equivalent of about 5-6 hours JUST TO LIGHTEN the hair. It can be done, yes but not everyone's hair is strong enough to withstand that many times of lightening.
In fact, the person bleaching has to have the technical know-how, proper training and experience to understand how long to lighten, the % solution to use as well as protective agents to prevent the hair from breaking prematurely.
Definitely... something you have to go to the hair salon for (to avoid further hair trauma).

More than just a dancing XMM, I've been using Tiktok to share some tips on what I've learned in school (on weight loss) and also hopefully let other people know that they're not alone - in their journey of finding themselves.
And of course, that includes hair.
You will often find me sporting different hairstyles and different colours.
In fact, my hair used to be really long until a botched perm made me go for something shorter.
Still looks pretty OK, IMO. But I've been sporting this colour for some time now and I feel it's time for a change.
I could try to bleach myself but... I've coloured my hair black before. DIY hair colour is almost impossible (yes, I've tried) because the colour just can't be stripped off on my own.
So, here I am at Ravissant Hair Salon to get some professional help for a change.
Ravissant Hair Salon has two branches, in Tras Street Tanjong Pagar and in Clementi 321. Clementi is closer to my place so I made an appointment on a weekend.
The place is gorgeous, with big windows that overlook Clementi Central.
The stylist who attended to me was Roy, co-founder of Ravissant Hair Salon. It is not every day I get someone who has cut, coloured and styled hair for celebs doing my hair so I'm pretty hyped.
Before coming here, I just wanted a colour that frames my face better, possibly with streaks of bleach in it.
Roy, being Roy, suggested the Pantone Colour of 2021: Yellow.
Not brassy yellow but bright Marigold Yellow.
TBH, I didn't even think of going for yellow but Roy suggested a yellow ear hook with an inner blonde pill that sounded pretty interesting. He mentioned that the rest of the colour will last around 7 washes before it starts to fade and the vibrant yellow colour will start fading after a month, complementing each other.
Given that this is a hair colour I've never tried before, I was game!
The first step in the process was bleaching.
He mixed the bleach powder with developer until the concoction became smooth.
Then, he decided to use aluminium foil to wrap the bleached areas to accelerate the process while making sure that no other parts of the hair would be unintentionally bleached.
Soon enough, most of my hair was covered with aluminium foil.
Roy made sure to check on bleached parts. Once ready, another stylist proceeded to help me rinse off the bleach.
During the process, they used purple shampoo to tone keep the hair looking ashy.
Once all the bleach and dye was washed off, they proceeded with blowdrying my hair and prepare it for round 2.
Imagine this process... REPEAT 5 TIMES.
Not once, not twice but yes ANOTHER 5 TIMES.
As you can tell, my hair was definitely not lightened enough. As I had previously dyed my hair black on my own, it took the stylists 5 times of bleach to get the hair light enough.
The initial two rounds of dry bleaching were done in the salon seat where he carefully painted the bleach onto my hair while the other three rounds of wet bleaching were done at the basin. This allows the bleach to be left on for a shorter period of time to reduce the damage.
Note to self: Never dye my hair black again.
It's a pain just to get it out!
Not sure if you realized it or not, there were quite a number of areas which were not yet lightened to his satisfaction.
And that's because... I've coloured my hair black before.
This therefore necessitated a second round of bleaching
I started the bleaching process in the morning but by the time the colouring began, it was already evening.
As some parts of the hair seemed like it wasn't able to absorb the yellow colour, Roy decided to change his plan and applied silver hair colour instead for the back of the hair.
Fortunately, the hair on the slides were able to successfully take on the yellow.
After 6 long hours at the salon, we're almost done.
Here's a sneak peek!
Just to make the final hairstyle look that bit more prefect, Roy trimmed my bangs for that extra sparkle.
Are you ready?
What do you think?
Prior to stepping into Ravissant, I didn't expect leaving with bright yellow colour after 8 hours but hey, I'm pleasantly surprised to see how well the combination of yellow, silver and black actually worked on me.
And of course, here's a Tiktok of the entire process.
I'm very very thankful for Roy and the team for being so patient with me even when my hair refused to cooperate with the yellow. He even shared a number of tips to make the colour last longer ie. use purple shampoo.
NGL, I'm not going to try black hair colour on my own ever again.
If you ever need someone to correct your own botched hair colour though, I'll highly recommend Ravissant Hair Salon. The stylists here know what they're doing and managed to strip the black off without my hair breaking + give me a gorgeous combination of colours I've never even thought of.
And that means, new outfit inspo!
