Hi I’m Agent E, a marketing manager and a somewhat regular contributor for Beauty Undercover.
As Father’s Day drew near, my wife surprised me with a haircut appointment for my son and I.
It would be my son’s first time cutting his hair at a hair salon and I could think of no place better than my favourite hair salon, Kenaris Salon.
I made the appointment on Saturday. Although a little apprehensive, I could feel my son's excitement at going for his first cut.
I chose the more affordable artistic stylist Summer for my son.
Summer looks like a pretty good choice because my son was unusually well behaved in her presence.
He may be small but Summer treated him like a gentleman.
Despite his young age, Summer gave him a proper consultation and guided him along the haircut as if he was an adult.
Can you spot the haircut errors in this photo?
She explained to him and to us that his haircut is a little short right now (thanks to my wife’s haphazard haircut). Hence, what she can do is to make the hair appear neater with trims here and there as well as correct some of the haircut errors my wife made while layering, for a more blended look.
With my consent (and my son’s consent), she embarked on a dry haircut for my son.
She trimmed one side of the hair…
before proceeding to the other side
Then to the back.
After about 20 minutes, she was done.
The hair assistant carried him into the hair wash area and gave him a hair wash.
It was his first time getting his hair washed like this so he was a little uncomfortable but was soon enjoying the process.
Back at the seat, Summer blew his hair dry.
She kept it on low heat and low wind so that he is not too startled by the sound and heat of the hairdryer.
Then, she styled his hair with just a little bit of wax.
While the salon staff were cooing over how adorable my son is, it was time for me to get mine. I went for a hair wash first before returning to the seat for my haircut.
As usual, I specially requested for Founder Director Ken. Although eventual price is 10x more than your usual QB cuts, I feel that his haircuts are worth splurging on.
I like it that I don't have to tell Ken what I like or dislike at each consultation and he'll still give me a fantastic haircut.
No fuss, no worries.
He also has a very good memory on what he has cut before, my hair volume and so on. Ken commented that my hair seemed to have grown quite a bit, something that made me very pleased. I do feel that my hair grew thicker these days and I’m glad he noticed.
Ken uses a mix of scissors and clippers and is very meticulous with his cut.
He cuts according to how my hair grows out and checks a lot so there is absolutely zero strand of hair that stands out. This makes it easy to style and maintain for a longer period of time.
Most other stylists I've tried before just doesn't have the same level of skill.
Ken is also not overly chatty. We talk about topics of the day like this time, it's our predictions for the impending World Cup. But at other times, I'm happy enough to fall into silence so that I can rest during the cut.
Time passed very quickly. About an hour later, my hair is done.
He then taught me how to style my hair.
This is how I looked like before, with an emergency haircut at another salon (as I had to go for an important last-minute meeting recently).
Looking back, it feels as if my previous haircut made me look very "soft"
But Ken managed me transform me totally with this new haircut.
I certainly look a lot more refreshed with this haircut.
He predicted that I'll get a lot more comments that I look very sharp after the cut.
Is Ken a hair magician or what? Within the first day of heading back to work, I got the exact comments that Ken predicted, "Wah, you look very Sharp". This is not the first time; the last time he cut my hair, he predicted that people will say that "Wah, you have a lot more hair" and they really said that.
Instead of magic, my wife says that this is a testament to Ken's skill; he knows exactly what comments others will say because he intentionally created the image to be that way.
Thinking back to all the times I've been to Ken, I think I really got to thank him. After going to Ken, I've become a lot less self-conscious about my receding hairline and instead choose to embrace it. He doesn't attempt to "conceal" the imperfections with longer hair and instead balances the haircut so that the receding hairline is less obvious. Ken also consistently gives me a different style and has so far never failed me.
So yes, you can consider me a fan of his work.
It was also a memorable experience going to the hair salon with my son.
The salon staff were very attentive to his needs and the stylist Summer very careful to make sure the haircut was good.
Unfortunately, we couldn't take proper after photos because he fell asleep while waiting for my haircut to be done and was rather irritable when he woke up.
It's hard to see from here but Summer basically corrected the hairstyle mistakes beautifully so there's no strange lobangs or uneven cuts here and there.
Overall, a successful Father's Day outing, I'd say!
Thanks wifey, and Ken and Summer from Kenaris Salon for the awesome cuts!
P.S. The haircuts are paid for by Agent E.
