Eek, Perms are so Auntie!
That may have been the perception of perms 10 years ago but a decade on, things have changed dramatically.
The advancement of perm lotions and techniques allow stylists to help create the ideal Hollywood Beach Waves the moment you wake up... all without much maintenance required!
That's not the only benefit of perms...
Read on to find out why SO many young women are opting for perms rather than rebonding in Singapore now!
From Korea to Hollywood, celebrities are sporting perms EVERYWHERE.
Emma Stone kickstarted the trend for celebrity perms when her MUA posted mid-perm photos on IG, followed by Jaime King, Olivia Munn.
On the Cannes red carpet, we have Priyanka Chopra and Charlotte Gainsbourg sporting waves and even as recent as last week, we see curls making it into the Spring / Summer 2020 Fashion Week catwalk at the Julien Macdonald show.
And of course, in the land where perms are commonplace, we see curls EVERYWHERE on the hair of our favourite celebs!
When perms started being easily available in salons, you could find big curls and smaller coils. Only recently did waves become more common because new perm techniques have been created to allow you to have soft waves that last.
If you want to go for a simple perm that adds more shape than curls to your hair, that's possible through C-curls, S-curls and loose waves!
People think that curly hair constantly requires care, but it's actually much easier than that. You won't have to constantly wash, curl or style your hair - all you need is just to blow your hair dry and apply some curling lotion and you are done!
By contouring your face with voluminous hair, your face will look smaller and slimmer in comparison. By opting for a side-swept look, you can also hide the wider or longer parts of your face.
We're all about embracing your looks and loving yourself, but if your hairstylist is able to give you a hairstyle that hides your insecurities and highlights your favourite face features, why not?
It doesn't matter what colour of the outfit you have on; waves will instantly spice up your outfit and add a personality that can't be achieved with straight hair. You'll also look more approachable and welcoming since it portrays a softer look.
Overcome flat hair problems in Singapore by getting a voluminous look that lasts. Don't worry about the weather putting a damper on your hair because the perm will help your hair to stay in place!
It looks good short, medium or long hair because you can opt for different types or curls that will suit your face shape and hair length. Whether you have a long bob or waist-length hair, your stylist will be able to recommend a style that complements your face and body.
If you're going for curly hair by styling it yourself daily, you'll know the struggle of waking up an hour or two earlier than normal to wash, dry and curl your hair. And not to mention those accidental burns thanks to the curling iron.
With semi-permanent curls, you won't have to struggle with that anymore. Leave it to the pros and you'll be able to cut down your styling time significantly. Plus, it's also lower damage in the long run to go for a perm and treatment than to subject your hair to heat styling every single morning.
We've mentioned this a few times, but perms are really easier to care for than most people think. With straight hair, you often have to style, comb and blowdry it to get rid of any kinks and frizz in the morning.
But with permed hair, your hair usually stays in the same shape and structure. Frizz and flyaways can be tamed with some serum and you'll be good to go!
Best of all? We love that curls can do all AND enhance your looks without being too loud. While it's nice to be bold, it's also convenient to have a hairstyle that easily suits all occasions. A digital perm can do just that because it looks effortlessly glamourous but still simple enough for your daily look.
And for girls still in school, curls may just be the only way you can stand out! Hair colouring tends to be disallowed in most schools in Singapore but not as many schools have a rule against perms!
Not sure what the process of a perm entails? We follow Agent YQ on her recent perm with her favourite Korean stylist at Style NA Korean Salon @ Compass One. Read on to find out more about her experience!
Hello I'm Agent YQ. I graduated not too long ago and am now working as a para-counsellor. When there are people experiencing emotional issues and problems, I am available to provide a listening ear and guidance to support them through their difficulties. Though it can be emotionally draining at times, seeing them overcome their struggles and walk out of their shadows gives me much purpose to continue what I'm doing.
When I find myself in need of a day off, guess where I'll be?
Yes - at the salon.
For me, there's something very stress-relieving about a whole new look from a haircut, colour or a perm that lifts my spirits.
Unsurprisingly, this led me to be a regular reader of Beauty Undercover. This is the website that led to discover some of my favourite Korean stylists at Style NA Korean Salon @ Compass One and Pro Trim @ Ngee Ann City. I actually go regularly to a stylist at Style NA Compass One till he left but very fortunately, I found yet another very talented stylist, Asha. She speaks English really well and I just connected with her the first time I had my hair cut by her. I've been going to her since then.
The last time I went, I was discussing with her about the possibility of me perming my hair. I've permed my hair before but somehow didn't have the time to do so this past year. Seeing more people around me with curls made me think of perming my hair again.
This is how my hair looks like now:
You can still see a little of the curls at the end, so its definitely due for yet another perm.
Very fortunately for me, Asha was looking for a hair model for perm. She asked if I was keen to share my experience on Beauty Undercover - the very website I actually read about. And of course, my answer is a YES!
So there we go.
For those who haven't permed your hair before, the first step is actually a haircut.
Asha trimmed my hair ends and gave the hair a bit more texture. She also cut it so that the curls will be formed where she expected it to.
Soft and bouncy curls, here I come!
Before the perm process begin, she applied a transparent plastic cover to my face to protect my eyes from the chemicals.
Next, Asha applied the perm lotion all over the hair. The perm lotion breaks the bonds so that it can be re-formed again later on.
She didn't just leave me there while the perm lotion was processing.
Asha came back to check on my hair once in a while to ensure that the hair is sufficiently softened.
After 20 minutes, the solution was washed off.
She dried my hair a little and with semi-dry hair, she began using small rollers to curl small sections of my hair.
Small rollers were used at the top to give my root that extra oomph - yes this is root perm!
For the rest of the hair, larger rollers were used to create looser waves for added texture and depth.
Then, she connected the rollers to a machine to heat the curls up and fix those curls.
This is how my hair looks like after the rollers were removed
Don't worry, the straightener in her hand would be used to make the curls less crazy.
Slowly, the curls transformed to look softer and more natural.
After the wash, Asha went on to dry and style my hair.
What I liked is that Asha didn't do any fancy styling tricks and instead, simply dried my hair with the dyson and her fingers!
She also shared some tips e.g. applying some curl lotion at the end for that extra definition.
Are you excited to see how my hair turns out?
A quick reminder of how it looked before.
And now after:
Is it me or does the perm just look so gorgeous?
I've permed my hair before but it just didn't look LIKE THIS.
The curls are so bouncy, my hair actually looked healthier than before.
Thank you Asha for the awesome job!
I'm over the moon with this perm and would highly recommend anyone to go to Asha from Style NA Korean Salon @ Compass One for an insta-worthy perm!
