If there was one TV series we all desperately needed to get us through the travel drought of 2020, it would be Emily in Paris.
Emily in Paris took the world by storm in 2020, and needless to say it's still one of the best feel good bingeable series on Netflix at the moment. I won't lie; I have probably gone back a couple of times to re-watch it just so I could feel like I'm living vicariously through Emily, exploring the cobblestone streets of Paris and eating all the Pain Au Chocolat possible.
I know, most of us won't be heading to the Fashion Capital anytime soon but if you're hoping to introduce a slice of French culture and beauty into your life, there is one place that could make you look as magnifique as the leading ladies... without ever leaving Singapore.
One of the benefits of being in a cosmopolitan city like Singapore is that we have no shortage of fantastic salons inspired by every country out there. Most Salons here are stylized to elicit a certain emotion or response upon entering, and in my experience, Yann Beyrie does not fail to deliver on that OOMPH factor.
The grey slate and minimalistic decor is reminiscent of haute couture runways not out of place at Paris Fashion Week. What better backdrop to strut your new hair style and have a mini photoshoot session? If the salon lights aren't doing it for you, you can even request the use of their ring light for that perfect selfie (they truly have thought of everything).
Fun fact, master stylist Anthony even added a personal touch; he claimed to have personally folded the cranes that fall delicately from the ceiling. Truth or cheeky claim? We'll let you come visit and decide.
Now of course, what could be more authentic than actually getting your Sunkiss Balayage done at a French salon? Yann Beyrie delivers more than just the hair service – when you walk in and are greeted by Anthony and Yann himself, you truly feel like you just might have stepped off the streets of Paris into this classy joint. Pretend to be Emily living her best Parisian experience here at Yann Beyrie!
Agent R recently got to experience the bougie Parisian life she had always dreamed of.
This killer duo at the top of their respective games will surely wow you with their prowess!
Yann's signature face contouring haircut is sure to leave you feel glam for days.
Anthony's skill with colouring hair can be likened to the skill and passion an artist has for his craft.
These "consultants of beauty", as Anthony likes to be called, will inject that perfect flair to your experience here at Yann's!
When I spoke with the stylists, they had dreams of injecting that signature Parisian Women sense of beauty into the fashion and lifestyle scene here. Through all they did, they continued to circle back to the idea of allowing the customer's natural beauty to shine though, and tailoring the hair to live and breathe with the customer, and enhancing the unique natural self.
Nobody wants just the latest trend of the moment copy and pasted on your own crown just because its "in" at the time. Embrace your flaws, live confidently, and not worry about portraying an image.
You can't help but feel rejuvenated after an empowering session here!
Every little detail is thought of. When Yann was cuttng my hair, he casually remarked:
The way I'm cutting your hair, I don't want you to come back to me just because you are reliant on me to keep the style in check.I want you to come back to me because you like the style that I give you.~ Yann Beyrie
And this has truly struck me as something only a true professional who is absolutely confident in their abilities would be able to say.
Looking at the end result, I have to say Yann not only talks the talk, he walks the walk as well. His haircut definitely lives up to his bold claim.
Yann is particularly skilled with curly hair, and quite a few were spotted already seated in salon chairs that morning. Due to his experience in Vidal Sassoon and back in France, Yann has extensive experience with haircuts and hairstyles for curly hair, no curl is too challenging!
We can make it a statement and showy, but why?I don’t need to be impressive, I care more about the final product that you have to live with~ Anthony Marouz, Yann Beyrie
First of all, no article about Emily in Paris can start with the eponymous heroine herself: Emily played by Lily Collins. Funky fresh fashion aside, another standout feature of this wonderful character has to be her eye-catching brunette locks! Just take a look for yourself:
Do not be fooled; it has only taken multiple stylists to carefully craft and engineer a final look that appears so effortless, sophisticated and chic. After careful investigation, we have determined that the only way to achieve such a subtly dynamic colour is through Sunkiss Balayage.

Sunkiss Balayage, is a free-handed hair colouring technique meant to add dimension and tonality to your current hair colour, giving it a really natural looking, sun-kissed glow to your hair! This method allows for minimal re-growth worries, and the emphasis is on being subtle, and enhancing the natural beauty of the hair – a concept often seen across French styling whether with fashion or makeup.

And guess where you can get the most authentic Sunkiss Balayage?
From French Hair Salon, Yann Beyrie of course!
You may just spot a Sylvie or a Camille here with the number of expat customers they're serving.
Sit in the salon chair long enough and you'll catch snippets of French conversation drifting towards you. Another customer recognizes a friend walking into the salon and rises to greet them with a boisterous "Salut!" and kiss on both cheeks. It becomes clear that Yann has solidifed a place here with its loyal French customer base. It's become so much of community that they'll bring their kids when getting their hair done and are always down for a friendly chat about France.
Maybe after soaking in such a charming atmosphere for long enough and you leave looking as classy as a Parisian!
Haircut and Colour by Yann Beyrie
... No? Oh well, can't say I didn't try...
Hi! My name is Rachel, and I’m 27 years old, working as a full-time freelance Actress for both stage and screen.
I regularly dye my hair, having done so for the past 12 years. I only started bleaching my hair in 2017. I do a fair mix of visiting salons to get my hair done professionally, and DIY-ing my own hair colours at home. I probably dye my hair at least 3 times a year, and I love experimenting with really crazy colours normally! However recently I’ve been trying to get the right shade of Ash Grey or Ash Blonde, but every salon visit has always left a lot more to be desired. I’m very excited to speak to Anthony the Master Stylist to see if he can get the Ash Grey colour of my dreams!
I really take pride in my hair, so I try to keep it in good condition, by using hair masks regularly, and putting leave-in conditioner or hair oils. What I’m hoping to achieve with the Face Contouring Haircut by Yann is that I’ll come away with a new look that makes management of hair health easier, and give me a style that I can easily tame and not have to style extensively in the mornings. My hair has been growing out quite a bit and I haven’t had time to visit a salon recently, so definitely overdue for a haircut!
Walking into Yann Beyrie was truly an experience in itself. It was 10am and the salon had just opened, yet there were already a few customers seated in their salon chairs and another few registering with me at the front desk. Yet despite how popular and bustling the salon was, it never felt crowded or claustrophobic. That’s due to the gorgeous minimalist décor of the place, and everything was styled in tones of grey, to give off a very calming and cool atmosphere.
The staff were really welcoming and friendly, and Yann and Anthony both made their way over to me within minutes of me settling into my salon chair. I could see Yann then bustle around, greeting all of his regulars and making time to speak to everyone briefly.
As Anthony prepped his tools he remarked that the salon took pride in the ambience that they set for their customers. They had specially curated a playlist called "Electro House Music", just to recreate that hip European vibe. Though I noticed that the turnover rate for clientele was really high, you don’t feel frazzled or any hectic energy.
Something Anthony pointed out that was really interesting was that they don’t deal with Walk-In Customers (so keep that in mind for when you plan you own visit down!) This is out of respect for both the stylist and the customer, that rather than being a last minute choice, or attempted to be squeezed in-between appointments, they would rather they have advanced notice to be able to allocate proper time and attention to you.
My consultation was with Anthony, who had developed a very specific method of recommending hair colours and styles to his customers since starting his trade 17 years ago. He asked me to remove my mask so that he could match my skin tone to the colour I had suggested, which was an Ash Grey colour. He determined that due to my skin tone the specific tone of ash grey that I had in mind would actually make me look washed out, so he counter-suggested a darker ash grey colour, also so that the regrowth would look more natural.
I had a ton of questions, which Anthony welcomed warmly. He said that he didn’t feel annoyed by questions as this was his passion and life and he would love to help quell any doubts in my mind. He considered his approach to colouring hair as a science, coming from an academic point of view. “It comes down to the ‘trilogy of beauty’ – the eyes, skin, and hair,” he said. “It doesn’t matter whether we are in Paris or Singapore, hair is hair.”
He said we would be completing the Balayage process before the haircut. He started off by applying Vaseline along my hairline to protect my scalp. For the Sunkiss Balayage he would be using foils. When I mentioned I wanted my highlights to mimic Emily in Paris, he said he would also make it a little more “hype” to suit the local scene in Singapore.
I was surprised to see that instead of using bleach to lighten my hair colour, Anthony only used pre-lightening powder.
He said that the reason for that was that because the hair didn’t need to be completely stripped of its colour, he didn't feel it was necessary. He remarked that this is where he stands out from other stylists who insist on bleaching hair to a very lightened degree. He was only going to use the pre-lightening powder to “clean” my cuticles, because my hair was already fragile so using bleach would have been bad.
Despite their being five other customers in the salon at 10:30 a.m., the salon with spacious enough that it didn't feel crowded or uncomfortable. It just felt chic, cool, classy – the epitome of Paris.
After applying pre-lightening powder, we started off with the colouring process. Anthony chose colour with Ash pigments to put on the crown of my hair to help neutralize the original colour. He showed me that he was using Italian products, just for that extra degree of fanciness.
“It’s easy to do something extravagant, but not easy to do something that can be lasting and practical,” He said as he applied the colour. “we can make it a statement and showy, but why? I don’t need to be impressive, I care more about the final product that you have to live with"
He continued to work swiftly.
I don’t want you to be dependent on coming back to me for your next touch up.I want you to come back because you want to and feel it’s a good job done.~ Anthony Marouz
One thing I noticed was that he was using his hands for the application process, not any tools I was familiar with like brushes or such.
This was because he felt that by using this method he could work a lot faster, and it would create more of an organic, contemporary styling result. Using the foils he created a sort of watercolour technique, and because we wouldn’t be touching the roots, we only needed to lt the colour set for 20 mins without heat.
This is what it looked like before the wash step!
After 20 mins, Jerry helped rinse my hair, while Anthony concocted a special toner containing blue pigments hand-mixed into it, which would be stronger than your store-bought blue shampoo.
We only let the toner sit for a maximum of 3 mins, otherwise the hair might soak up the colour and turn blue. This was followed by the usual shampoo + conditioner + rinse procedure.
Last step for colouring! More use of hands and no tools to apply the final colour. This is so the stylist can better feel the movement of the hair.
Anthony prefers the use of less machinery, and prefers mixing his own cocktails for the pre-lightener and toners. He did say that bleach would have achieved a brighter result, but he was more keen on preserving the hair health, so he’s choosing to do something more technically advanced.
Post Ash-Grey wash state!
After yet another wash whereby we used up the rest of the Toner cocktail...
...I got ready for my Face Contouring Haircut. This step would be taken over by the Master Stylist himself, Yann Beyrie!
Yann took a look at my bone structure, and asked me a few innocuous questions about my usual hair styling methods and what kind of style/looks I preferred. I later find out he was gathering information through the subtext of my answers to formulate the right cut for me!
He decided to keep the length of my hair and give me light layers to create more volume and to just ensure overall hair health. He even remarked that occasionally he will even disagree with what the clients request as he knows it will not suit their face shape, so that he can achieve the best possible result for them.
However, he is more than willing to make compromises. He even tailored my fringe style to one that suited my preferences, even though he usually would not recommend that style to others.
After the wet cut, we did a standard blow dry, and he went on to refine the final cut and style of the look.
The final product was supposed to be easy to style, with a “wash and wear” vibe. I remarked that since I am always on the go, I would not like a look that takes too much time to prep.
Last step now! After applying some leave-in conditioner, he proceeded to show me the best way to style my hair. To showcase the Balayage they curled my hair tightly. Normally I would have it in looser waves but I could definitely see the dimensions of the Highlights in the curls.
A last refinement…
Et Voila! C’est Magnifique! What I truly loved about this style was how easy it was to style on my own. Yann gave me some simple blow drying tips: blow dry your hair forward with movement, while brushing side to side, following the natural fold/fall of the hair. This would enhance the natural texture and movement of the hair.
I really felt like I had gotten star treatment here!
Walking out of the salon I truly felt empowered and put together, and I felt that I finally had a taste of that quintessential French Girl vibe of looking effortlessly put together.
If you would like your own experience experiencing an Emily-In-Paris-esque makeover, I highly recommend Yann Beyrie for your next visit!
