Hello, I'm Agent YL, currently working in retail for a global fashion brand.
At work, I've got to look stylish and put together but outside of work, I love to challenge different type of looks.
YOLO after all.
Why restrict yourself to look a certain way?
To help me achieve different looks, I often try different stylists based on friends' recommendations. This time, a friend of mine recommended me to try No. 8 Hair Studio. Apparently, they have a new stylist Shim who isn't just good with perms and colours, he is very creative as well.
When I heard that he is looking for a hair model, I was excited to volunteer to see what change he can create for me.
I really liked the salon when I first entered.
It was spacious, bright and the mirror was actually placed in an easel type design.
Shim looks very cute but is actually older than he looks. He has over 8 years of experience in the industry and it shows in his professionalism during his consultation.
He asked me several questions about my job and my preferences. Upon knowing that I like creative styles, he asked if I would like to go for a perm together with the newly trending Fiesta hair colours complete with super short bangs. I love to perm my hair and I'm definitely up for quirky styles so why not?
A few photos of my hair before we begin:
As you can see, I haven't done much to my hair for a long time.. even the colour has grown out.
Shim gave me a good hair wash before we start the hair service proper.
Shim was so considerate, he attached a visor to my forehead before he began the cut.
He started off with cutting the fringe.
And then trimming the rest of the hair to give the eventual perm the shape.
The next step in this mega makeover is bleach. He will be selecting several sections to bleach and highlight the hair to bring out different parts of the perm.
But first, addition of Cureplex to the bleach.
Cureplex is a bond multiplier that reduces the damage bleach has on the hair.
He applied the bleach on several sections while I took the chance to nap.
The bleaching process took some time.
The bleach was left within the foil for about 30 minutes while we wait for it to process.
Shim then escorted me for a hair wash once the bleaching is complete.
Back at the seat, he applied a treatment here to repair any damage my hair would just have sustained.
Then, he started to apply the perm lotion evenly across my hair.
To accelerate the processing, mild heat was applied at this step.
Yet another treatment was applied at the sink when the perm lotion is washed off after about 30 minutes.
One more treatment back at the seat.
And we are ready to curl the hair.
Shim sectioned the hair carefully and attached rollers of different sizes at different areas.
I really look like an obasan at this point.
The interesting thing is that he doesn't need to connect the rollers to a machine. The rollers are pre-heated by this machine that looks like it came from space!
This also means that damage to the hair is reduced as the hair will not be subjected to excessive temperatures.
All he did was to insert these pre-heated rollers within.
My hair was left to process for another 20 minutes or so.
He then applied neutralizer to fix the newly formed curls
And soon, I'm ready for yet another wash.
By now, I've been at the salon for quite a few hours... fortunately, I'm now at the final step: colour!
Shim mixed a beautiful orangey colour he calls Fiesta.
Apparently this is one of the Pantone Spring/Summer colours that is trending!
He applied the colour to the bleached areas and an darker browns for other parts of the hair.
Finally my last hair wash!
A sneak peek of my hair while it is being blowdried.
Are you ready to see my hair makeover after almost 5 hours?
Here's a reminder of how my hair looked like before:
And now after:
What do you think?
I love the unique Fiesta colour that is red with an orangey tint. Not a colour I've tried before!
The curls were also soft and added texture without being super curly.
The short bangs took some time to get used to but certainly gave an edgy, assertive vibe unlike what I had previously.
A huge change from what I had before!
I went to Shim hoping for a big change and I certainly got what I asked for with a colour, perm and a cut!
In one sitting, I went from straight dull overgrown hair to fiesta curls with an edge! I especially love the warm colour which I think reflects my personality really well. I'm also happy to report that the curls lasted for quite a long time as well and love it that my hair didn't look or feel too dry afterwards despite going through both bleach and perm. In fact, my hair feel strangely smoother after the perm and colour than before, possibly because of the many treatments incorporated in this service.
Now, I'm ready for my upcoming vacation!
Thank you Shim, for making my hair Insta-ready.
