Those who don’t have it want it; and those who have it hate it - that's the truth about curls. Yes, curls are pretty but they take a darn long time to style before they can look even mildly presentable. Straight-haired girls will never understand the looks us curly-haired women get when we walk out of the house with our bird's nest of a hair, particularly in humid Singapore. They're not complimentary, to say the least.
As much as some of us love our curls, the demands at work and home make it really difficult to give them the attention they need. That's why some of us turn to straightening our hair. Having tried most options, we can safely say that Keratin Treatment is possibly for best for those of us who love our curls but hate to manage them.
Here are 5 reasons why:
1. Keratin Treatment Smooths Frizz Without Taking Away The Curls Completely
2. Defrizz Effect can last 3-6 months
3. Straightening Effect is Not Permanent
4. Saves Time During Blowdrying
Keratin Treatment makes hair more hydrophobic, making blowdrying faster. Instead of requiring 25-30 minutes, 10 minutes is all it takes for it to be completely dry
5. Adds Shine to the hair and makes it look more healthy
With this in mind, Agent Y chose Keratin Treatment over rebonding at Hair Studio Flamingo. Read on to find out more about her experience below.
Hi, I'm Agent Y, a Theatre Maker who has directed a number of plays such as Chicken Little and Pistachios and Whipped Cream.
My primary passion may be theatre but my interest in Japanese language and culture has also opened a lot of doors for me. In fact, I had the good fortune to work in Japan for a number of years before returning to Singapore recently.
As you would expect, I loved my time in Japan! There are so many things to love about the country - their fascinating culture, vibrant arts scene, their people and, of course, how beautiful the entire country is.
One thing I did not expect to love so much, however, is their weather.
As an Indian lady, I have thick and curly hair which is a blessing as well as a curse. Although it does look luscious, it often gets too frizzy in Singapore's humid weather. Upon my arrival in Japan, my normally frizzy curly hair was transformed into bouncy curls that still looked presentable even without much styling.
I know that my hair isn't going to win me any pageants but in Japan, I had many locals and even hairdressers complimenting me on how beautiful my natural curls were. This is a far cry from Singapore where it was very common for people like me to hear the following:
Your kind of hair, no choice must rebond
Instead of thinking negatively about my hair, my time in Japan taught me to see how lovely my curls were.
Alas, I had to come back to Singapore. Don't be mistaken. I'm happy to be back. I love my friends and family here. What I love a lot less is what the humidity in Singapore does to my Indian locks hair, turning lovely curls into a frizzy mess.
I turned to Google for help and found a lovely list of salons to go for treatment for frizzy hair on Beauty Undercover, I was elated. Hair Studio Flamingo, in particular, stood out for me because the décor looked cheerful, the services looked promising, the reviews were good and the price point while not cheap was also not exorbitant. I was also attracted to the fact that it was a Japanese salon because I loved my hairdressers back in Japan and how they handled my hair with a lot of care.
On my first visit to Hair Studio Flamingo, Aki-san explained all the options to me thoroughly (including Keratin treatment) but didn’t hardsell anything. I ended up picking a 5-step hair treatment. What I loved about the experience was the fact that they weren't pushy at all and didn't try the usual marketing tactics on me. That made me decide this would be my go-to salon from now on.
The second time I visited in Feb 2019, I met Tomoka-san who did my hair that day. The entire experience was so much more than just a visit to the hairdresser's. As with my time with Aki-san, Tomoka-san was really fun to chat with.
We swapped travel stories and Tomoka-san told me about her love for India and Tamil. That was such a great moment. I was talking to her the whole time about my hair woes and wanting my “Japan hair” back and she told me she wanted to learn how to work better with hair like mine. She told me about some of her trips to India and I taught her some things about Japan. Yes, you didn;t mis-read. I taught her some things about Japan and she taught me things about India. It's kind of crazy, I know. Aki-san also popped over to chat with us and we had a great time laughing and sharing cultural tidbits, and nodding over shared experiences and language learning. This is one of the biggest reasons I truly love this salon.
This time, I remembered Keratin Treatment that Aki-san had introduced to me previously and asked them more about it. They were very thorough, expaining that the treatment wouldn’t make my hair unnaturally straight and that, with my hair type, I’d have some waves at least. I decided to give it a shot and it was MAGICAL. I have a typically busy work-life schedule so the outcome of Keratin Treatment was a real time-saver. I could spend less time on looking less frazzled! AND, it actually lasted more than 4 months! It also didn't have the HORRIBLE “growing out” side-effect that chemical straightening usually comes with.
Hence, I was REALLY REALLY HAPPY to get a message from Tomoka-san asking me if I could share my experience on Beauty Undercover. She would perform another Keratin Treatment for me and all I had to do was to detail the process and my thought about it.
Given that I love Hair Studio Flamingo so much, the request was a no-brainer. I made an appointment for a weekday afternoon.
It may be a long walk from the MRT but Hair Studio Flamingo is so gorgeous, just walking in fills me with joy.
Tomoka-san welcomed me into the salon and brought me to a seat. Then, we discussed about what we were going to do today.
This is how my hair looked before the treatment:
I know it looked quite frizzy but this is already considered relatively well-behaved thanks to my last Keratin Treatment 4-5 months ago.
On bad days before Keratin Treatment, I would look a lot like Einstein and not in a good way.
Because it had been 4-5 months since my last Keratin Treatment, my frizz was making a comeback.
I love my curls but it is really a pain to deal with all the frizz.
I couldn't wait to experience the smoothness of my hair again after Keratin Treatment!
On top of going for Keratin Treatment, I had this CRAZY idea to go for an UNDERCUT. My concern was whether I could REALLY pull it off with my hair type, face shape and how I would maintain it. After all, I had NEVER done it before. Most hairstylists I talked to had just dismissed the idea but not Tomoka. She not only patiently listened to what I wanted, she also pulled her hair up and to show me HER undercut and told me that doing mine would be no problem at all!
She also showed me a magazine to give me options for how close a shave I wanted.
After discussing, we decided to start small on just the left side to see if I could handle the undercut.
Everything sounded good, so we went for it.
As I requested for an undercut, the first thing Tomoka-san did was to cut off the sides of my hair.
I told myself I wan't going to regret it but I confess my heart still skipped a beat when she made the first cut.
We had a good laugh over it nevertheless.
She trimmed it slightly before moving on to the rest of the haircut
Chop chop snip snip buzz buzz it went and I had never loved a hair decision more!
All trimmed and neatened, it was time to wash off the gunk from my hair so the treatment could be applied to a clean canvas.
She used Goldwell Kerasilk Shampoo which cleans and clarifies hair better than normal.
I always enjoy this process as she washes my hair really thoroughly and gives me a light massage in the process.
Oh, the luxury!
Time to get started on the actual Keratin Treatment.
Tomoka-san carefully applied the solution onto my hair from root to end.
She was truly generously so no part of my hair would have weird bumps.
The solution was then left on for about 15 minutes before we went for yet another wash.
In the meantime, we had a great time chatting and exchanging stories.
Tomoka-san had come to watch a Japanese Noh event I’d translated and mentioned how this was her first time encountering Noh. Amidst the laughter, we agreed on how it was great to learn about our own cultures from people overseas.
After washing out the keratin, Tomoka-san blew my hair dry.
It was time to seal the treatment in with heat.
She used a straightener to lock the keratin solution in place. As Marco-san had just finished with a customer, he came over to help, too!
The straightening process took about 30 minutes because of my thick mane of hair.
Finally, my hair was shampooed to remove all the residue.
Being the perfectionist that she is, Tomoka-san gave me a much-needed trim for the hair ends.
Then, she dried my hair and that was it!
After all the washing, treating, ironing, washing (again!) and drying, Aki-san came over to put on some light makeup for me to complete the look.
Are you ready to see the result?
Here's a quick look at my hair before
And now after!
OMG Is this really my hair?
Can you see how shiny and smooth it has become?
I can barely believe that my normally frizzy hair can look like this.
Here're some photos from the front.
And here's my undercut!
I am beyond pleased!
I love that my hair isn't stick straight and yet there are no more 'poofs' to make me look like a crazy woman!
It’s been more than 2 months since and my hair is still very very well behaved. The children I work with now comment
Wow! Your hair is so long and shiny! What did you do?
I don’t know if there can be a better testimonial than one from brutally honest children.
PS. These people speak AMAZING English and won’t botch up their understanding of your hair needs. So if there is anyone like me who wants great conversations WHILE getting curl-control, this is THE place for you!
