Singapore may look and sound like a cosmopolitan dream come true where salary is high, education is good, people are nice and the city is safe but there's one downer almost everyone complains about: the hot and humid weather.
After all, there aren't many places in the world that gets @victoriabeckham 's hair frazzled... but Singapore is definitely one of them. Victoria is blessed with an excellent personal stylist who can get her hair looking glam in no time. But what about the rest of us?
We may be no Duchess but we can certainly take a leaf out of Meghan Markle's books with her secret hair weapon: Keratin Treatment. Keratin is apparently Meghan's favourite hair service, having gone for it numerous times before her wedding to keep it looking perfect. And guess what! This is a perfect hair treatment for expats in Singapore as well.
Here are 10 reasons why:
With a layer of keratin around your hair, your hair is less prone to frizz. This is because it locks the moisture in and prevents the humidity from making your hair poof up! We love that you don't have to opt for a rebonding treatment if you want to have natural hair that isn't frizzy.
This makes it the perfect option for ladies with wavy or curly hair who want to maintain their natural hair texture.
Besides being appropriate for straight and curly hair, it is also suitable for all hair types. Whether you have fine or coarse hair, you'll be able to find a keratin treatment that suits your needs.
There are so many variations in the market for the many hair types and textures so you can ask your stylist to recommend the best option if you're interested!
Keratin Treatment is ultimately a treatment. What it does is to wrap a layer of keratin around it to smoothen the hair. As no bonds are broken within the hair, you can rest assured that it will do no damage to the hair.
If you've rebonded your hair before, you'll know that root growth is super annoying; there will be a permanent kink where your natural curly hair grows out.
There is no such problem with Keratin Treatment as the Keratin fades over time and so you'll be able to see a natural gradation between the curly regrowth and the smoother hair.
You'll be able to roll out of bed with your gorgeous hair because keratin treatments are known to be long-lasting and fairly easy to maintain.
With hair that is softer, smoother and sleeker, you won't have to worry about wrestling with your hair. Simply brush through your hair while you're blowdrying it and you'll be good to go.
You don't have to flat iron your hair anymore, saving you another 10-15 minutes each day!
Not only will your hair be soft and smooth, it'll look hair-commercial worthy too. Keratin treatments just add a layer of shine that other treatments can't beat.
Normal hair treatments last for just a few washes, but keratin treatments can last for multiple months with proper care!
Normal treatments work by adding a layer of product on top of your hair, but keratin treatments penetrate your hair cuticle to change its makeup. This strengthens each strand and stops your hair from breaking easily.
These are just 10 of the many other reasons why many expats in Singapore do Keratin Treatment every 3-4 months each year. Agent K is one of them! If you're keen, read on to find out more about her recent Keratin Treatment at The Bund @ AMK.
Hello, I’m Agent K. I used to be a lawyer and am now working in a law firm in another capacity.
I came to Singapore with my husband 14 years ago and we are blessed with 3 children. As you can imagine, life is pretty hectic managing both work and family. My expectations of hair is simple; I do not require my hair to look as glamorous as what you see in magazines but I do wish that it looks sleek and professional when I meet clients.
This is how my hair looks like after taking a break back in England. I very much like the highlights by Alvin but as you can see, my hair reverted to its messy, curly state once I landed in Singapore.
That's why the first number I dialed when I arrived back here was to Alvin; could he please save my hair?
For those who're keen to know, Alvin wasn't always my regular stylist. He came highly recommended by a friend for his highlights and true enough, Alvin delivered perfectly. Since then, I've been going to him for colours, haircuts and Keratin Treatments.
This time though, he asked if I would mind sharing my experience on Beauty Undercover. It was my first time hearing about this website, which apparently shares quite a bit of information about hair salons, stylists and hair services in Singapore.
I thought, "Why not?"
Alvin is an awesome stylist with incredible skill, someone I would not hesitate to recommend. So there I am on a weekday in this gorgeous salon in the middle of Ang Mo Kio- Bishan Park.
I entered the lush salon that was surrounded by greenery, immediately feeling more at peace.
Alvin greeted me at my chair where we began the consultation.
As usual, Alvin checked my hair texture to see what my hair needs at the moment.
As you can see, my hair may look marginally acceptable from the front but really, there's a lot of curly hair underneath that makes it hard to manage. In fact, I take at least 20 minutes to get my hair ready every morning given the blowdrying and straightening required.
Keratin is a life-saver as it saves me SO MUCH time.
Alvin explains that Keratin Treatment is suitable for me as my hair isn't that damaged and the keratin molecules for Keratin Treatment is small enough to penetrate the hair to repair its structure and make it easy to manage without straightening it too much.
That all sounds good to me, so let's go!
Alvin started by giving my hair a good wash. This starts the hair on a clean slate, allowing for deeper and easier absorption.
This is important as it allows the Keratin Treatment to stay on the hair for a longer period of time.
Back at the seat, Alvin blew my hair dry.
See how tangled my hair is when it dries naturally?
With the help of an assistant, Alvin sectioned my hair and got it ready for application of Keratin Treatment.
He used a special technique to apply the keratin solution directly onto my hair.
This technique creates quite a bit of bubbles, which he shares allow for deeper absorption of Keratin into the hair.
Next, the hair is steamed to heat up the hair and further improve absorption.
After about 15 minutes, the solution was washed off.
My hair was then blown dry again.
To lock in the keratin treatment and smoothen my hair, Alvin used a brush to blow dry my hair straight,
paying extra attention to the bottom layers.
He then used a flat iron to straighten my hair.
This step is crucial as it activates and seals the Keratin solution that was previously applied.
I love how my hair already looks much smoother and shinier after this step!
And... that's all!
The Keratin Treatment is complete.
Fast, isn't it?
A quick reminder of how my hair looked previously:
Super silky, sleek and natural!
I'm ecstatic about how my hair turned out - it really looks like this right out of bed! Sleeker and still looks absolutely natural.
Thank you Alvin and The Bund team for your great work, as usual.
Looking forward to coming back again for the next highlights and Keratin Treatment soon.
