Perms used to be the hair service your mom would go for to get those voluminous Maggi mee curls and it's not hard to understand why. With perms, all you have to do is to give your hair a quick blow-dry and you'll look like you had spent a whole lot of time styling your do. If you opt for messy curls, you can just get up, shake them out and you're good to go.
Perms have since evolved from those Auntie tight coils to feminine effortless waves that are often seen on celebrities worldwide. That is probably why more and more girls in their 20s are going for them.
All perms add volume to your hair while making it more manageable, but not all will flatter your face. With input from current trends from Korea, Japan and even the US, we've compiled some of the sexiest and most unique perm styles that you can carry off in your 20s!
We're not sure when or how exactly this perm started, but we've been seeing this trend on many Korean idols recently. Instead of having the hair curl inwards or in a circular motion, flip curls, as its name suggests, has the ends turning outwards.
It's a little strange for us Singaporeans because we tend to have hair that naturally curls outward or "qiao" which we HATE. Yet, this perm INTENTIONALLY makes the hair go that way.
You probably won't rock this hairstyle when you're in your 30s or 40s because it might just make your hair look unkempt but it's a popular look among youngsters because it's gives off a fun and playful vibe. See how good it looks on Kpop idols such as @sunnydahye?
Here's SNSD's Tiffany rocking a much shorter version.
It's amazing how young and fresh this new Flip Curl can make you look.
If you're keen to try it out, you’ll be glad to know that you don't have to travel all the way to Korea.
There are actually a number of Korean stylists who can do this look really well right here in Singapore
Korean Flip Curl by Lily Seo at Pro Trim Korean Salon @ Jurong East JEM
For Korean Flip Curl, your hair should preferably be one length to show off the curl in its glory.
Flip curl perm by Koinonia Salon @ Tiong Bahru
If you think Flip Curl reveals too much of your face, you can always request a long fringe to give you some coverage.
Perm by Sherlin at Be U Hair Design @ The Centrepoint
Instead of a standardised one-length perm as seen in the previous trend, the layered perm is a much more natural option for girls who prefer a casual look.
Layered Perm from Zinc Korean Hair Salon @ The Centrepoint
By working with layered hair and curls in different directions, you get beautiful waves that flow naturally. You'l look like a model getting her hair fashionably blown back by a fan in a photoshoot. Promise.
Layered perm by Soobin from Mode Studio @ Wheelock Place
Though people of all ages can pull off this look, most keep their hair long when they're young and go for shorter cuts as they age. Since this style is best with really long hair, your 20s is the perfect opportunity to let loose with these curls.
The new Care Perm from Bump by AVENTA is a perfect example!
Care perm by Daisuke at Bump by AVENTA @ River Valley
If you prefer a more uniformed look that is still easy, breezy and natural, try this.
Long Wave Perm by Pro Trim Korean Salon @ Ngee Ann City
It's similar to the previous style, just without the layers. Beachy waves have taken over perfect curls and this is a clear example of why. The long wave perm is chic and stylish but it doesn't look too coiffed.
Long Wave Perm by Threes Japanese Hair Salon @ Clarke Quay
As you get older, you might prefer a more structured look to your with your mature, professional image. But when you're young, you're probably more inclined to go for those tousled hairstyles that look like you didn't put in too much effort to look great.
ong Wave Perm by Do My Hair Salon @ Orchard Central
This is recommended if you have thicker hair because the lack of layers reduces the volume of your hair.
Long Wave Perm by AVENTA Japanese Hair Salon @ City Hall
Young doesn't always mean no curls.
Hippie perm by The Space Korean Hair Salon @ The Cathay
The hippie perm that has been trending in Japan and Korea since 2018 is now gradually being seen on fashion-forward girls in Singapore. Yes, the curls are very small and yes there are lots of them but the messy "I woke up like this" look speaks a lot of your defiance towards convention.
Hippie perm by Koinonia Salon @ Tiong Bahru
And guess what? Maintenance is minimal as all you need is some styling products and a quick scrunch of the hair and you're good to go. It's definitely a more casual look that is edgy and artsy, which is why we think your 20s are the best time to try this.
We recently followed Agent NK to do her first hippie perm at Koinonia Salon.

It can be difficult to decide between bleaching or perming your hair to avoid excessive damage, but you don't have to choose anymore with new solutions and techniques.
The Paimore GRATS perm lotion, for example, is causes such little damage that you can perm hair of any condition. This makes bleaching and perming possible in one sitting, which is what Picasso Hair Studio did for Agent Snd in her first Balayage Perm.
Balayage perm by Picasso Hair Studio @ Bugis & Tanjong Pagar
We've also seen No. 8 Hair Studio do the same as they bleached, permed and coloured hair for Agent YL for CNY earlier this year. It's amazing because when one stylist does both your colour and curl, he's able to bring his whole for your hair vision to life, making it look more uniformed and complete.
Fiesta Curls by No. 8 Hair Studio @ Chinese Garden
Most salons would, however, recommend doing it in two sittings to reduce the damage to your hair.
3D Colour and Perm by Bump Hair Design @ The Rochester Buona Vista
Since the natural look is trending, people are also into soft waves. But it's not just the tousled beachy waves that they're looking for. In this day and age when people are constantly working, they want something that is easy to manage but also elegant and professional - and Wolume Wave Perm ticks all these boxes.
Soft waves by Style NA Korean Hair Salon by Joel Park @ Parkway Parade
It has a Japanese feel with soft layers and wispy ends. It's fun and youthful but it also looks very work-appropriate. The lack of structured curls makes it very easy to just roll out of bed and go!
Care Perm at Bump by AVENTA @ River Valley
Even though it's more of a professional look, it's still a young and playful style which is why we think that you should try it in your 20s!
