How many people have gone down for hair services advertised at low prices, only to be forced to pay upwards of $400-$600 for hair colour that look nothing like what you initially wanted? Hearing horror stories from friends, it is no wonder why so many of us choose to go for box dyes rather than professionals to get our colour done.
This doesn't have to be the case though. There are ethical salons that manage to find locations with low rentals and choose to pass on the savings in exchange for customer loyalty; Geranium Hair Salon in Lavender is one of them.
Read on to find out why we think Geranium Hair Salon is uniquely perfect for budget-conscious people looking to colour their hair.
Budget-conscious babes will know that the real good deals tend to happen in salons outside of Orchard / CBD. If you don't read reviews and head down, you may very often than not, find yourself being hardsold or be attended to by less-than-skillful stylists as those salons have to pay for the high rentals in their location.
Hoping to make good hair services accessible to its customers, the founder of Geranium Hair Salon consciously found locations that are right outside of town and yet enables them to offer great hair services at value-for-money prices.
The two locations that fit the bill? CT Hub and Horne Rd.
Minutes away from Bendemeer MRT and Lavender MRT respectively, you can get to Geranium Hair Salon easily via MRT and for those who drive, find really affordable parking close by.
Notice that it is also close to the hipster Jalan Besar cafe enclave, making it a great place to get your hair done before meeting your friends or SO around the area.
Prices here may be affordable but that doesn't mean that the salon look cheap in any way.
With the intention to help make every one of their customers look like a superstar, founders of Geranium Hair Salon incorporated huge backstage-style mirrors and bulbs in its decor. Even before the makeover begins, we customers are already feeling like a million bucks and primed to make a change.
Geranium Hair Salon is anchored by @linus_lkh, Ambassador for Shiseido Ultist colours and a popular local hairstylist who used to be a Director at a top Japanese Salon chain in Singapore.
First timers to hair colour will love how systematic and detailed Linus is in his consultation, letting you know the suitable colour tone for your skin, where your parting should be and even the ideal shape of the cut to flatter your face. The consultation is not a monologue as Linus will take the initiative to ask a few questions on your preferences, wardrobe and lifestyle before deciding with you on the best colours that suit your face.
He is not the only gem here at Geranium though. Fellow stylist Lucos have also been raved not just for his beautiful hair colours but also his willingness to go the extra mile and share lifestyle tips on scalp health.
Last but not least, there's Eva. Not only is she great with instagrammable hair colours, she's pretty popular among customers for her easily maintainable haircuts as well.
With the Shiseido ambassador anchoring the salon and beautiful decor, some would assume that services here would cost quite a bit. Fortunately that is not the case. Haircuts by stylists here start from $40 for men and $45 for women, which is much lower than what you can find in Orchard. Their hair treatments too are very competitive with prices as low as $45.
The signature service here however is the hair colours which cost below $200 (with no bleach) and $300 (with bleach) before any promotion. As part of their opening promo, however, they are offering hair colours for all hair length (without bleach) + hair serum at an insanely low price of $98.
Understand why we're sharing about Geranium Hair Salon now?
Prices for hair services here may be low, but the founders continue to use quality hair products from Shiseido and for perm, Cosme. This stems from founder Grace's philosophy that Geranium has to offer good quality services with good quality products in order for customers to come back. As a result, she uses only quality products for both Geranium Hair Salon and Geranium Skin Boutique, the facial salon that is just adjacent to Geranium Hair Salon.
Wonder about how a hair service at Geranium is like? We follow Agent S to her first hair colour at Geranium Hair Salon.
Hello I'm Agent S, a year 1 student at a local university. I'm doing an internship now and am going to be in year 2 when school starts in August.
I've always been curious about colouring my hair but never got the chance to do so due to cost. I heard many many friends share about how they went down to the salon expecting to pay $100+ according to the promotion but went out the salon actually paying $400-$500. I don't want to get into that situation, so I used box dyes twice to colour my hair.
Pretty decent, right?
After a while though, I got a bit bored.
I'm already entering my sophomore year; if I don't experiment with lighter hair colours, when am I going to do it?
I've been dreaming about getting ash hair colours for a very long time ... maybe not as light as this but yes, something close.
Since I am WFH on an internship, could this year's summer be the year I get my dream ash colour?
As I got to know Agent G earlier this year, I asked her to recommend a budget-friendly place that would not hardsell me and the first that came to her mind? Geranium Hair Salon. I googled and saw a number of good reviews on Google and Facebook and so made the appointment.
I got a little lost when trying to find the salon. Apparently, there was CT Hub and CT Hub 2. For some reason, my Dad dropped me off CT Hub 2 and I had to walk one big round to get to CT Hub. That was the only mishap of the day though.
I walked into the office building CT Hub, got up the escalator and was wowed by this modern salon that looked somewhat like a backstage of a fashion show.
Yes, I'm here at Geranium Hair Salon.
So cool, isn't it?
My stylist Linus attended to me immediately and escorted me to a seat.
Linus may be the expert and the older one here but he never made me feel that my opinion was not respected. Feeling more like a bro, Linus took the time to explain what the different ash tones are and what I have to take note when choosing each one of them.
Linus shared that ash hair colours are very popular these days but those that look more greyish may require me to put on thicker makeup to avoid looking too washed out. Blue ash on the other hand may turn green as the colour fades depending on my hair pigments whereas pinkish ash is likely to make me look more feminine and princessy.
As I haven't dyed my hair before and tend to be more "chor lor" than princessy, I think the grey-ish ash still fits my ideal dream hair best... and so that's what we went ahead with.
As my last haircut was also more than a year ago, I requested for Linus to give it a trim. I'm thankful that he didn't just go straight to the cut but shared about how he was intending to add layers to make my hair more lively and voluminous.
So exciting, I can't wait for a change!
The first thing he did was to embark on the cut.
He didn't just cut my split ends but added layers to give my hair more movement and volume.
It may just be a cut but my hair already felt a lot lighter and more volume immediately... I'm impressed!
Next, came the lightening process. Knowing that I wouldn't have the budget to colour anytime soon after this, Linus suggested highlights rather than colour. This way, the hairstyle can still look good even when my hair grows out months later.
He used the weaving method to get the small sections and then applied lightening solution to it.
To prevent any accidental colour transfer, he then wrapped it up in an aluminium foil.
When all is complete, he checked the foils and brushed more lightening solution on areas that need more lightening.
Once that's done, Linus mixed another colour and applied it on the rest of my hair to make my previous hair colour more ashy.
20 minutes later, it was time to wash off the colour.
Back at the seat, Linus mixed the ash grey i was looking for.
He didn't just add the colour and developer; Linus added a few drops of the Ultist Essence, which he mentioned will help my grey hair colour last longer. Apparently, the essence uses the Amino Micro Veil Technology - positively charged amino group that anchors the soft network-shaped veil - helps to keep the hair colour intensity and protect it from the fading process.
He then proceeds to apply the hair colour and essence onto my hair.
After yet another 15 minutes, Linus was satisfied with the results and brought me to wash them all off.
And we are almost done!
Ready for the unveil?
Sorry for spamming so many photos... as you can see, I love the colour so much, I couldn't help but take the chance to snap a few more for the gram.
I found it really amazing how the colour looks really different under different light (and different apps too... haha!)
Depending on ambient light, it can look really grey on some photos and blue on others.
Quite amazing isn't it?
Now I have my dream hair that matches both the wardrobe and my personality.
I listened to Linus and got myself a silver shampoo the day after the colour. I have been using it faithfully since and this is what my hair looks like one month later:
Gorgeous, isn't it? It's looking a bit blue because of the silver hair shampoo but I'm loving this rendition! Most importantly, my hair still feels as soft as ever, maybe because of the treatment he added.
Thank you Linus and Geranium Hair Salon for the beautiful hair and a really fun experience at the salon. So glad that I was introduced to you and safe to say that this will not be the last time you will see me!
