Hello, I'm Agent ET, an air stewardess with our national airline. :)
I really want to find good stylists in Singapore but I had such bad experiences that I just gave up trying; the stylists tend to either cut my fringe too short, make my face look huge or layer my hair so much that it is hard for me to bun up my hair for work. That's why I tend to do my hair only in Korea; whenever I fly to Korea for work, I'll schedule some time with a random Korean hairstylist to cut or perm my hair.
As much as the hair usually turns out OK, there are a few problems with that:
Hence, I was still interested to find out if there is a salon I can go to in Singapore. When my primary school friend raved about this new salon she discovered, I was intrigued. It's called No.8 Hair Studio and from I read about it on Beauty Undercover, the salon looks clean, bright and cozy while the stylists sound really good. I saw that they were looking for hair models on their Facebook so I decided to contact them.
Fortunate enough for me, they were looking for someone to perm their hair.
My hair is pretty straight and healthy, as you can see below:
My hair definitely needs a trim!
Glad to fit their requirement, I decided to come down to try their perm!
My first impressions of No.8 Hair Studio was very good. Like what I saw on Beauty Undercover, it was spacious, comfortable and stylish and looked very much like a cafe.
I was greeted by the very courteous Andy who guided me to the lockers to put my bags within.
Next, he showed me to a seat where the consultation began.
I know that I was going to do a perm today. This is not the first time I'm doing a perm. In fact, I often perm my hair in Korea, just that my last perm has already straightened.
I don't want something too curly or aunty so I requested for curls that are more natural and easy to maintain even with the tough flying schedule.
Andy understood what I was requesting for and showed me a few photos of the perm he's looking to achieve.
Basically big waves rather than small curls - looks good, methinks!
So I gave the go-ahead.
Andy explained that he will be colouring the hair first as it opens the cuticles and requires less time for the hair to be processed for perm later.
I'm more of a perm rather than colour person. No bleaching or crazy colour for me pls!
Knowing what I'm looking for, Andy chose to retouch my roots and refresh the current colour with a natural brown.
He didn't colour my whole head, but highlighted sections of hair to add dimension and reduce damage.
This will also make any hair regrowth in the future look more natural.
After application, we had to wait for some time for the colour to process.
Andy didn't just leave me there though. We chatted for quite a bit and then it was time to remove the aluminium foils!
And wash the hair colour off.
Back at the seat, Andy gave me a trim. I like how he was careful to only cut just a little bit of my hair off because I really wanted to keep my length.
Finally someone who listens to my requests!
After he was satisfied with the trim, he began applying the perm lotion.
Once again, we had to wait another 15 minutes for the perm lotion to process.
To accelerate the process, he used this special machine to heat up my hair slightly.
When it was almost time, Andy tested my hair to see if it was ready to go for a wash
And indeed it was!
Back at the seat, he began the curling process.
Agent G noted that this is a very unique way of curling that she has never seen before. Andy shyly mentioned that this is a technique he developed on his own to create curls that are defined in some areas and loose in others!
He also chose medium to big rollers to make sure that the eventual curls that resulted were loose and huge.
After he was done, Andy connected the rollers to the digital perm machine, which heated them up.
15 minutes later, it is time for the reveal.
This was pre-wash.
Andy proceeded to apply neutralizer to fix the curls that were just created
Before washing my hair once again.
During the hair wash, Andy gave a really good head massage that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Back at the seat, Andy began combing out my hair
and even taught me how to blow dry my hair at home.
I just had to twirl and hold for a few seconds.
Before I show you the results of the perm, here are some photos of how my hair looked like before:
And now after!
From the front
And from the back
My hair is a lot more voluminous and feminine now, don't you think?
Can't wait to take some selfies... haha!
I even managed to do a hair flip!
Although perm can damage the hair, I love it that my hair texture remains very soft!
Overall, I had a good time at No.8 Hair Studio. The ambience is really chill, service very good and stylists very zai. When I was hungry, the stylists there even offered to order food for me... what a thoughtful gesture.
Most importantly, the hair turned out beautiful... not just on the day itself but even weeks after!
This is not my first perm. I've done a few perms before, with the last one 4 years ago and I must say that this perm is WAY easier to manage than what I had before. Maybe because this time I had the chance to communicate with Andy or maybe because of the way he curled my hair, the perm had just the right amount of volume. not too much, not too little and so was very easy to maintain. It's just been a few weeks and it's still in very good shape after washing. The problem I have with most perms is that I cannot get the same look that professional stylists can achieve at the hair salon but this perm changed all that; with Andy's tips, my curls look great on most days.
Thank you Andy and No.8 Hair Studio for the great perm!
I'll definitely come back again the next time I need a haircut, colour or a re-perm!
