Hello, I'm Agent G, Chief Editor of Beauty Undercover.
There has been a rise in interest in head spas and scalp treatments as more and more salons are offering them. As prices are not always cheap, we thought that it's a good time for us to check out what a typical head spa / scalp treatment is like in each salon.
Having gone to two different Japanese salons for their head spas, however, I think it's time to try out a local one. And what better salon to try than to go for Nioxin's first flagship salon: 99 Percent Hair Studio?
Nioxin is a brand of shampoos and conditioners catering to scalp issues. I have been using it occasionally ever since I found out about the brand. I loves how clean my scalp felt afterwards but note how I cannot use it regularly because it can be pretty drying for the hair. Still, I have a good experience with Nioxin's shampoos thus far!
FYI, this is not sponsored by Nioxin so all opinions are honestly our own.
99 Percent Hair Studio may be best known for their vibrant hair colours but regular customers will know that they are very popular for their scalp treatments as well! All stylists here have gone for trichology training and so are very knowledgeable about scalp. They can diagnose scalp issues very accurately and give you plenty of tips to take care of your scalp.
That is why when 99 Percent Hair Studio shared that they are introducing a Nioxin-focused scalp treatment, I was all ears.
Read on to find out what my experience was like.
I made an appointment on a quiet weekday afternoon. The outlet I chose to go was at Orchard Central as I work close by.
This is their newest outlet and also their most spacious with each seat having quite a bit of personal space for themselves.
I was escorted to a seat and given their menu to take a look before the service began.
Love how they've recently updated their menu and removed add-ons that make the pricing hard to understand!
But alas, I'm here for the scalp treatment and not to browse their menu.
Soon after I settled down, my stylist Shan came by. Maybe because she's Singaporean, I found it incredibly easy to talk to her about anything under the sun. She asked me about the last time I went for a scalp treatment and also about the concerns I have. I shared with her about my previous head spas as well as my aim to delay hair fall as much as possible.
With that, we move on to the next step of the treatment.
Before she can proceed to the treatment though, Shan mentioned that she will do a scalp scan to better understand my scalp.
I always love the scanning part because its like a report card of how well I've been taking care of my scalp.
Thanks to the Nioxin shampoo I've been using, my scalp appears relatively clean and healthy.
Some follicles are clogged as I haven't gone for a head spa lately but I'm glad to see that there is no redness, swelling or residue.
Shan was also very attentive in making sure that she scans different parts of my hair so that I could see the overall health of my scalp.
Given my scalp and hair condition, she uses a Nioxin app to suggest the right treatment for me.
Pretty cool, isn't it?
With the scalp treatment decided, we can now get started.
The first step is scalp cleansing. Instead of using a peel, this treatmetn start with a gentle scalp solution that uses the dermabrasion technology to lightly exfoliate the scalp.
She made sure to section my hair so that all parts of my scalp would be coated.
Then, I was treated to an amazing head massage to help with removing all the gunk that are clogging my follicles.
A red laser was then placed over my head to warm and help the solution seep deeper into the scalp.
Knowing that the heating process will take some time, Shan arranged for the manicurist to give me a complimentary hand mask.
No, they are not giving me that because I'm the Editor of Beauty Undercover. This is actually a complimentary perk given to all customers! Apparently, 99 Percent offers a basic head massage, scalp scan and hand mask treatment with EVERY hair service.
How's that for pampering the customer!
The hand mask contains lots of vitamins that nourishes the skin and make it feel smoother.
A manicurist came by to help with application of the hand mask. Love how generous with the application even though it was a free service!
When the application was complete, they wrapped it with cling wrap so the cream wouldn't get everywhere.
By the time my arm was wrapped up, my hair was ready to be rinsed.
Shan escorted me to the washing bay where she gave another enjoyabe massage.
She made sure to rinse the dermabrasion solution off thoroughly with Nioxin's Shampoo.
Next, Shan sprayed a leave-in scalp treatment directly to my damp hair.
Now that my scalp is thoroughly cleansed, this treatment rejuvenates the scalp with all the nutrients, vitamins and moisture that it needs.
She made sure to apply it evenly throughout the scalp as well
Then, she gave me yet another awesome scalp massage.
To ensure that the leave in condition penetrates in deeper, Shan used another blue laser to calm my scalp further. Shan didn't just walk away during this period of time but chatted with me, so time passed especially fast!
At the same time, the assistant removed my hand mask and used a warm towel to remove the remaining cream.
Can you see how smooth my arm is now?
Once the blue laser was done, it is time to blow my hair dry.
She applied some oil at the ends and twirled my previously permed hair to dry it.
Loved how my curls were still so neat even though no curling iron was used.
That wasn't all. A final scan was done to see how effective the head spa was.
The scan showed that my scalp was indeed much cleaner.
And there you have it!
A happy Agent G with a cleaner, fresher and lighter scalp.
Even though it was a scalp treatment, I liked how my hair also looked extra healthy and shiny after the head spa.
I've previously tried head spas at 2 Japanese hair salon and a Korean salon and now it's our first time trying it at a local hair salon. As much as I love the superb massage in the other salons, there is a something special about having a Singaporean stylist attend to me. It is easier to communicate with her about my concerns and my needs and she understands without me needing to go into too much detail. Shan is also very helpful and goes the extra mile to share various ways to take care of my scalp and incorporate it into my daily routine.
And hence, I find it incredibly easy to go back to her as she can remember my scalp condition and share with me how my scalp condition has improved. I also find the process here more systematic and geared towards improving the scalp condition with their scans.
Given that they also offer a complimentary hand mask, a scalp treatment here definitely ticks all the right boxes when it comes to effectiveness and service!
