I’m Agent Y, an English language and Communications lecturer at a university in Singapore and also a mom to 3 children. Juggling these two major roles in my life meant that I simply don't have the time to fuss with my hair! The problem is, I’m also a vainpot :P Although I don't want to spend too much time and effort on my hair, I always dream of getting those beautiful curls I see on celebrities. When I plucked up the courage to get my first digital perm while I was still working in Malaysia, there was no turning back. It is SO easy to manage hair after I perm it; you don't have to curl it, just blowdry it in a certain way and the curls will just come out beautifully. Since then, I've become a perm addict, perming my hair once or twice a year... I had great results until 4 months back.
I decided to try the much raved MUCOTA Omega Digital Perm at one of the Korean Salons (which incidentally had many bad reviews on Beauty Undercover as well) and I was thoroughly disappointed. It took me only one hair wash to see how limp and lopsided my perm was. The curls on my right were also a lot straighter than the ones on my left.
Naturally, I called the salon and explained my predicament to them. They told me to return to the salon to get it fixed. I did just that, but the outcome was still a far cry from what I had expected.
Since it was already the second time my hair had undergone damage within a short period of 10 days, I decided to simply live with my less-than-lovely curls. At that time, I also needed a recolour, so I returned to that same salon 2 weeks later to get a base colour and highlights, which required bleach. In case you are wondering why I returned to that salon after my failed perm, it was because they had sold me a package earlier and I simply wanted to use up whatever was left of that package.
But still, my hair was far from my ideal. Look at what it looks like NOW:
My hair looks so thin, it certainly doesn't look like I've permed my hair at all.
Initially, I thought I had to tolerate my imperfect perm for at least 6 to 8 months before getting a new perm job.
Until I read on Beauty Undercover about this miraculous new perm lotion that can create beautiful curls even if the hair had undergone a perm, colour or bleach called Paimore GRATS.
In the same article, Beauty Undercover was organizing a giveaway for a complimentary Paimore GRATS perm if we comment and share the post.
So I did what was requested. Who knew that 1 month later, I was actually chosen to be the lucky one to go for the complimentary perm!
We arranged for a weekday afternoon for the appointment at Picasso Hair Studio at Tanjong Pagar.
And so… the BIG day came. I arrived at the studio on the day of my appointment with Master Trainer Jesly. I was led to a seat by one of the studio staff and was immediately presented with a menu of drinks I could choose from. I settled for iced lemon tea and was pleasantly surprised when the staff came back with not only iced lemon tea served in a conical flask, but also with an array of biscuits stylishly arranged in a tall bowl and sweets served in a soup spoon. I was impressed!
Then he asked if he may help me keep my handbag in the locker which I graciously told him I’d very much like that. By then, Picasso had already earned 2 brownie points for customer service.
Once I was all settled, Jesly approached me and introduced herself. She then proceeded to conduct a hair consultation for me.
She asked me what my wish list was, listened attentively, and gave me suggestions on what would work on me given my hair texture and face shape.
Jesly may look all serious during consultation but is in reality a warm and friendly stylist who is clearly darn good at what she does. She told me she would snip off about an inch off my hair because hair that was too long would further make my already long neck look longer.
The professional in her also suggested that I have shorter side-swept bangs that fall just below my cheekbones to soften my diamond-shaped face... just knowing that she even considered such small details made me look forward to her perm!
As for the curls, she would give me medium curls because I shared with her I like slightly stronger but natural looking curls.
At this point though, she cannot confirm that she can go ahead with the perm. What does this mean? Jesly cautioned that she may not be able to go ahead with the intended perm should my hair be too damaged from my previous perm and colour job.
I thought that was a very cautious thing to do because not every stylist would be this careful or honest.
So thats where we went.
This is how my hair looked like, straight after the hair wash.
All tangled up!
For a moment there, I was worried that my hair wasn't healthy enough for a perm. Fortunately, that is not the case. Super relieved when Jesly gave me the go ahead to start the perm.
The first step isn't the perm itself though.
Jesly began the perm with a haircut.
Snip, snip, snip.
Jesly’s fingers moved deftly throughout my hair.
She gave me the right cut to frame my face and layers at all the right places to achieve the intended outcome.
After the cut was complete, she applied the Paimore Pre-Treatment which is included as part of the perm, something I appreciated since this is something that usually requires additional cost.
She applied a generous amount onto my hair and spread it all over the more damaged parts.
To accelerate absorption of the pre-treatment, she applied heat using this UFO looking gadget.
Once the pre-treatment was complete, she began applying the perm lotion. The Paimore GRATS perm lotion is special because it breaks the bonds within the hair, enabling the hair to be re-sculpted later. Unlike the usual alkaline perm lotions, the Paimore GRATS is unique because it works under low pH environments. This allows the cuticles to remain closed during the process; hence, causing minimal damage to the hair.
Once applied, she covered my hair with a transparent covering before applying heat again.
The heat helps the lotion penetrate deep into the hair to achieve optimal results. This step took about 20 minutes.
To test if my hair was ready for curling, Jesly took 2 small strands of hair and rolled them in curlers prior to heating the hair. After 20 minutes of heating, she took off the curlers and examined my hair closely,.
Yep, the hair appears ready to be curled!
A hair wash at this point to remove the perm lotion.
As the previous step would have caused some form of damage to my hair, Jesly gave it a generous spritz of Tokio hair treatment to restore and give it further protection before beginning the curling process.
I love how Picasso uses SO MANY premium treatments within this perm without additional charge simply because they feel that your hair needs it!
A quick blow-dry before she can embark on the curling process.
Jesly sectioned my hair and curled it only half-way because that would achieve more natural looking curls.
Even my bangs were curled!
Once all the curlers were securely in place, Jesly connected the digital perm machine to every roller.
And another 20 min processing begins again.
This was how my hair looked like immediately after the curlers were removed. They reminded me of Goldilocks’ tight curls. The good news is, this is not yet the final product, so rest assured that the final look will be looser more natural looking curls.
The next step came as a surprise as all my previous stylists have never done this when I went for perms - Jesly used a straightening iron to straighten the top part of my hair.
She explained that it would help smoothen out any kinks that might have formed when the curlers were put on.
Such attention to detail. One more brownie point.
After that, a neutraliser was applied onto the curls and the curls were then held in place with giant clips.
That was the final step to set the curls and it took another 15 minutes.
Then, off for a final hair wash.
Now that my curls were done, it was time for a blow-dry to reveal the gorgeous curls.
Jeslyn applied some curl cream and then blow dried my hair with just a hair dryer and fingers to twirl – no brush needed!
I was also given a quick tutorial on how to blow dry my hair at home
and then, it was time for some hands-on practice!
Not every stylist bothers to teach us how to maintain our hair afterwards, so I really appreciate it.
We are almost there!
Before I reveal how my new curls look, let’s take a quick look at my curls before…
And now after!
Can you see the difference in volume?
A multi-angle look on my new hair!
As you can see, the curls also look more bouncy and luscious from the back!
Strangely, my hair also appeared to be softer and definitely more easy to manage after the perm!
It is not so dry and frizzy, maybe because of the many treatments applied and because the Paimore GRATS is known to close hair cuticles and make it feel smoother!
I LOVE IT!
Bye bye limp curls and HELLO defined, voluminous, and natural looking curls.- University Lecturer Y
I love how the perm totally changed how my hair looked from lifeless and flat to voluminous and natural... despite the bleach and 2 previous perms done just a few weeks before.
I would also like to commend on Jesly's suggestion on giving me shorter side-swept bangs; I feel that it gives me more volume at the front, unlike the flat and limp hair I had before.
Totally in love with my new curls!
So, ladies, if you’re looking for great customer service, a cosy ambience, attentive stylists who pay close attention to details, and most importantly, a low-damage digital perm, my personal experience here tell me that Picasso Hair Studio is possibly the best choice; you're sure to go home feeling good about your curls!
I, for one, know that I'll definitely be back here for my next perm especially since the price here is very close to what I paid before! (for the other salon who botched the perm)
