Agent G discovered a new nail salon along East Coast Rd when she had dinner at Mookata one evening.
To see if the salon is worth recommending, she got Beauty Undercover Resident Nail Expert Agent C to check out their nail services.

Every woman has a beauty obsession that she can't live without, and though I'm a sucker for hair treatments, manicures have always been my first love. There's just something about an unpainted nail that irks me, so much so, back when I couldn't wear nail polish in secondary school, I used to get away with painting my toenails instead as it was highly unlikely a teacher would ask you to remove your shoes and catch you red-handed for going against the school rules. As there was no longer a need for a secret rebellion after graduating, both my fingernails and toenails have always sported a new colour since then.
I like to do my own nails and enjoy recreating simple designs discovered on Pinterest on Instagram but I also go to nail salons occasionally to pamper my hands and feet. Hence, I was very enthusiastic when Agent G invited me to review the services at Project Nails. Beyond being just a regular nail salon, the owners apparently founded this concept as a social enterprise, using only top notch nail products, offering high quality nail services without hard selling and bettering the lives of nail artists by returning most of the profits to the nail artists itself.
Intrigued by their story, I'm interested to find out if the nail services here are as good as what I hear from Agent G!
Located along the stretch of East Coast Road lies Project Nails & Project Hair, a cozy beauty salon primed with modern interiors that offer both nail and hair services. Admittedly, it was a little challenging to locate the salon amidst the stretch of interesting boutique shops and eateries nearby. With a lot of great eating spots and i12 Katong mall just opposite, however, I am already making a mental note to come back here to explore all the must-try eats within the vicinity after pampering myself to a head-to-toe beauty (hair and nails) treat.
I was escorted to a seat the moment I entered. The receptionist was very kind and showed me the hidden storage beside the massage seat. I love when salons take into consideration the care of your belongings. It takes customer service one step further when beauty salons incorporate dedicated storage areas as part of their design concept. This hidden storage is built next to each massage chair, so the customer's belongings are safe but always within reach.
Another wonderful aspect of their customer service is that Project Nails offer a selection of complimentary tea by the well-known brand, Clipper Tea. Along with the selection of teas, your taste buds will be treated to 100% homemade cookies by its thoughtful owner Jenny.
These cookies are made in small batches with tender loving care by the salon’s resident baker, and oh boy, these cookies are deliciously mouth-watering! It's a pity we couldn't snap a picture of the cookies as we were too busy relishing its taste, but I'll go as far as to say that the cookies alone are worth a trip down to Project Nails.
The two talented nail technicians work on my hands and feet while I enjoy a back massage courtesy of the massage chair. The massage continues throughout the entire service but you can always halt the massage if that's not a feature you'd enjoy. Gentle yet detailed, the nail technicians file and shape my nails.
Though I have only been to a few nail salons, I have never experienced nail technicians who were such perfectionists as these two. These nail technicians not were not only thoroughly detailed when recreating my preferred design, they would also keep clipping off any extra skin or shape rough edges till the nail looked perfect.
I have quite a bit of dead skin on the heels of my feet, and it was nice to have my cracked heels scrubbed to remove the loosened dead skin. While having the dead skin removed, I learned from the manicurist that foot fungus is a common issue.
Though it sounds embarrassing, it's totally normal as since our feet spend most of its time in closed shoes, the trapped moisture and sweat leads to foot fungus. Foot fungus is treatable with medicated cream but you can easily prevent it by keeping your feet as dry as possible and giving it a bit more TLC with DIY foot scrubs once in a while.
Thankfully, the pedicures here come with a foot scrub. The scrub used is made from organic sugar and has a hint of vanilla and floral essence. It has a consistency of somewhere between thick liquid and cream.
As my feet were getting scrubbed, my fingernails were being coated with a base coat for the gel colour that was soon to follow. I usually gravitate towards minimalistic designs, and this time was no different.
I chose a line design for the accent nails trend, and a deep sparkling green by Singaporean brand, Jacqueline Burchell. The colour reminded me very much of one of my favourite shades - Across the Universe by Deborah Lippmann.
Both the nail technicians used their free hand to create the line design, their steadiness didn't falter once, which I found to be pretty impressive. They were very detailed in their work yet quick.
Since I requested for gel-based colours, I needed to place my nails under the light after each coat to cure the polish. Gel-based colours dry quicker and they last much longer than normal nail polishes. I actually wore covered shoes during this nail visit and the design remained intact and unsmudged regardless of me wearing my shoes immediately after the pedicure.
The final touches and a dab of cuticle oil later ... we are nearing the end of the manicure and pedicure.
As if sitting on a massage chair wasn't enough, I was pampered with a final foot and hand massage at the end of the service. I'm not one for foot massages as I find it rather painful than relaxing, but this foot massage was quite enjoyable as the nail technician use the right amount of force and pressure to soothe my aching legs with an organic lotion.
I find the nail service here particularly pampering. From the delectable treats to the friendly and skilled staff, I enjoyed every bit of my experience at Project Nails. The nail design turned out gorgeous, and the nail technicians' detail to attention is commendable.
The nail service was also very relaxing as the nail technicians allocated enough time for me; no rushing through to take care of the next customer. There is also no attempt to upsell packages, something I really appreciate.
Their delightful service makes me look forward to my next appointment here at Project Nails ... and the next time, I'll be bringing my sister!
