Hi, I'm Agent GVF!
I work in a rather unconventional industry - Air Freight. I'm not working in the frontline service and therefore, I have a lot more flexibility with regards to the hairstyles I choose. However, my hair is naturally wavy. I used to hate it when I was young because my hair looked like a terrible mess all the time. It was only later that I realized that this can be managed with a good hairstylist skill.
Look at my hair. The curls are au naturel!
As I grew up, I started to be more discerning and found a number of hairstylists who could cut my hair relatively well. I don't switch hairstylists very often, because it is always nerve-wracking when wondering if a stylist skill is good or not. In fact, I'll read reviews before trying and will usually stick to the same hairstylist whom I feel comfortable with.
Unfortunately, my usual stylist is located at Far East Plaza (it used to be on Beauty Undercover as well). I used to patronize him very often but in recent years, I find myself lazy to travel all the way to town just to have my hair done. Hence, I found myself browsing on Beauty Undercover for hairstylists I can trust for hair salons in the East, and I came across this article on the best neighbourhood hair salon in Tampines.
After seeing the envy-inducing hair photos, I checked out their Instagram page and totally fell in love with the gorgeous and vibrant colours! Some of these colours seemed only achievable in super expensive Japanese salons but they managed to do that as well, so I was super impressed. Just in case you're wondering which hair salon I'm talking about, it's Full House Salon at Tampines! The more I read, the more tempted I became, so I decided to make an appointment at the salon for the colour I was looking for -ash navy blue. I read Agent G's description on every single stylist and eventually decided on Samantha before going down.
I was not disappointed. This is how my hair turned out! Although it looked a little dark in the photo, the colour turned out to be the shade of blue I was looking for. I was so happy with the salon that I returned a second time. In fact, after my first visit, I never looked back. Whenever I needed to change my hair, she's the first person I think of because Samantha is always very patient to find out what I really want and gives me advice about what she deems suitable for my personal style, hair texture, and skin tone. I was so happy that I decided to write about my experience at Full House Salon.
Thanks to this review, I was selected to be the Reviewer of the Month for February 2018! So this means that I get to go back for Samantha for yet another colour and cut. I know that Samantha thinks that I shouldn't get a short haircut but actually, I've always preferred short cuts. Hence, I hope to challenge Samantha to see what kind of short haircut she can give me this time!
I arranged the appointment on a weekday at Full House Salon in April 2018 on one of my off-days. The very thoughtful Samantha already have an array of snacks ready for me when I arrive.
We talked a bit about my preferred hair length and style. I mentioned to her about my preference for a short haircut and gave her a pixie, Japanese-style photo as a reference. She looked thoughtful for a while but eventually mentioned that I could actually pull off the style. The only thing she's worried about is my wavy hair but she says that she'll be able to tame it, given the new techniques she learned from Vidal Sassoon. Now that she's confident, I know I can leave my hair in her hands... so here we go!
First, Samantha brought me to the basin for a hair wash. Can't remember what joke Samantha was sharing but I enjoyed her patience and conversations at every step. Her hair massage was also really good!
Back at the seat, she towel-dried my hair and explained what she was going to do step-by-step so that I know what she's doing to my hair. I appreciate this because it makes me more feel like a partner in this haircut. She listens to what you have in mind and updates you so that you know what's going on. It doesn't mean that you should tell her exactly what to do though. Samantha has a lot of expertise and has in fact been invited by many haircare manufacturers to teach about hairdressing, so she has her own professional opinion. Preferring to do what is right, Samantha is not afraid to reject customer’s request if it doesn’t suit them. However, she does take the effort to explain why that is the case and doesn't just dismiss our concerns, something that I find really important.
Knowing she's a perfectionist made me feel at ease that she is the one handling my hair. While others may be worried at the inches she is cutting off at one go, I'm not. I'm actually really excited to see what type of short hairstyle she can do for me!
Beyond hair-related conversations, I had a fun time chatting with Samantha. She is very friendly and there is something about her that tells me that she has a genuine personality. There is a personal touch at Full House Salon that I somehow don't experience anywhere else. Other than Samantha, the rest of the staff are also very friendly and took the initiative to chit chat with me, made me feel very comfortable in the salon.
Soon, my haircut was done. As I was going for a colour makeover too, the next thing Samantha proceeded to bleach my hair. Bleach? I know we didn't talk about that at the beginning. But while cutting my hair, I showed Samantha about the next hair colour I would like to try next, a translucent lavender hair colour with a tinge of grey, which requires bleaching. As the colour will require her to bleach all the way to the scalp, she applied a scalp protector before bleaching to avoid any discomfort or pain on the scalp.
She applied the hair colour section by section, very carefully to make sure that my hair colour would be even. This is what it looks like after one round of bleach ...
About 30 minutes later, I was ready for another wash.
Don't you think I look a bit ah lian now? Don't worry, luckily, this is not going to be the final colour!
Before the colour is applied, another layer of scalp protector is applied again.
Finally, it was time for the third and final wash, which felt very relaxing.
Samantha then blew my now short hair dry but the perfectionist in Samantha isn't done yet! She gave me a quick trim to perfect the cut after colouring.
Finally she is done! Are you excited to see my transformation?
And now for after:
Don't you think the colour looks gorgeous! This is not my usual because I usually go for the louder blue or purple. This time it was more subtle yet different from the usual browns ... I LOVE IT!
I also like the haircut a lot because it gives me more of a younger Japanese feel. The front view doesn't tell the whole story though ...
This is how it looks like from the side to the front. Definitely looks fresher than this, don't you think?
A haircut/colour with Samantha is a truly enjoyable experience for me. She is patient, skillful and makes sure that her customers are comfortable. Prices are also pretty reasonable given how awesome the colour turns out! They don't just look good immediately after. I particularly love how her hair colours fade beautifully and evenly over time. This time, for example, my hair colour faded from ash lavender to a natural brown shade that looks very natural, unlike the usual ugly yellow bleached hair colour. I also find that my hair colours last much longer compared to other salons I've tried. I also get many compliments on how this new haircut and how style suits me better so I'm really thankful to Samantha for this cool-looking cut! Most importantly, this cut is easy to maintain and doesn't require me to styling.
Photo of my hairstyle after washing... no blowing or styling!
So yes, having tried a lot of salons in the area, I would agree with Agent G's assessment that Full House Salon (and Samantha) is possibly the best neighbourhood hair salon in Tampines!
