Hi, I'm Agent SK. You don't see me much on Beauty Undercover but actually I'm often behind the camera to bring to you Beauty Undercover Agents' first hand experience at the salons. So yes, I've seen countless number of colours, perms and rebonding.
They are done so beautifully that I am really tempted to do my hair... especially before Hari Raya. I did just that last year, when I coloured my hair for the first time. Not the crazy type of colours - my curly frizzy hair can't take it but a lavender brown. I love how the colour still look very good after a year!
Take a look at my hair to know what I mean.
Not brassy at all even though I didn't maintain it much.
This year I want to try something else!
As you can see above, my hair is curly and crazy frizzy.
As much as I appreciate the volume and sometimes the curls, I feel that it makes me look older and more aunty.
My curls are also not very balanced.
Hence, what I usually do EVERY DAY is to straighten it with a straightener. I've done so for the past 20 years or so of my life, wasting at least 30 minutes each day for blowdrying and 30 minutes to straighten my hair. You can imagine how much of my life I've wasted on straightening alone.
On top of that, daily straightening actually makes my hair dry and frizzy.
But what to do? I really don't like my curly hair.
I have NEVER gone out of the house looking like this before... this is my first!
Agent G and my own sister have been persuading me to go au naturel and embrace my curls but all I can say is that not everyone likes that. My curly hair is very hard to manage and I just don't like such curly hair.
In fact, I've been toying with the idea of rebonding for the longest of time. Agent G recommended me to try Keratin Treatment first because she is not sure if I can take the reduction in volume but after much discussion, I still decided to go ahead with rebonding because
Of course, I don't want those super straight hair because all I want is for my curls to be more easily manageable.
After hearing me out, Agent G finally suggested for me to try Rebond Perm at Act Point Salon. Act Point Salon is affordable and among the best in the industry because they do SO MANY perms and rebonding every day.
I trust Agent G's suggestion and therefore made an appointment for my first ever rebond perm!
FYI, I have never permed or rebonded my hair in my life.
I made an appointment on a Friday morning. The stylist who attended me is Sen. Although I could tell that he is more comfortable in Mandarin, he is very friendly and tries his best to communicate with me in Singlish or even in Bahasa.
He checked my hair condition and asked me a few questions about my preferred hair length and style.
Based on what I want, he suggested rebonding the top section of my hair and adding S curls at the bottom of my hair.
C curl rebonding may be popular but actually Sen says that it is pretty hard to manage C curls because you need to blow them properly or they will curl the wrong way. It is also not as voluminous as S curls. S Curls is also closer to my natural curls and therefore will feel more familiar to me.
In addition, he suggested going for a more intensive pre and post treatment because my hair is actually rather frizzy and damaged. As the bounciness of the curls depends on how healthy my hair is, the pre and post-treatment will help make my curls look prettier.
Sen sounds like he knows what he's talking about so here we go!
As usual hair wash is the first step. He washed my hair and checked that my hair condition was okay before going ahead with the perm.
The next thing he did was the haircut. He confirmed my hair length once again; as he saw that i was a little nervous about the cut, Sen reassuringly mentions that he will only cut one inch to trim away the damaged hair ends.
After about 20 minutes, the haircut was complete.
See how little he actually cut? :D
I'm a little less worried now.
With the haircut complete, it is time to apply the pre-treatment.
This pre-treatment infuses the hair with proteins, ceramides and other ingredients to fortify my hair ahead of the impending damage.
After carefully appying the pre-treatment, he left the treatment on for another 20 minutes.
Without rinsing off the pre-treatment, Sen began to apply the perm lotion.
He first applied it to the top of my hair, near the roots area. He didn't go all the way to the roots because Sen mentioned that he didn't want to irritate the scalp. Also, it is not possible to rebond all the way to the scalp anyway, hence he left a bit of a distance.
Once the top is done, he applied the perm lotion to the rest of the hair.
What the perm lotion does is to break the bonds of the hair so that it can be resculpted later.
He has to apply the perm lotion for different periods of time because the hair at the roots are healthier and more stubborn and therefore require a longer processing time. The hair at the bottom is already more damaged and porous and so to minimize damage, shorter processing time is required.
Once everything was applied, he covered my head with a wrap to use my natural body heat to accelerate processing time.
After about 15 minutes it's time to wash my hair yet again.
Back at the seat, Sen and another stylist came over to blow my hair dry. It was only after it is 100% dry, did Sen began to flat iron the top part of my hair.
This straightens the top part! To ensure that my hair does not look too flat, he straightened my hair at an upward angle.
Small details but apparently, these things make a difference in the final look!
Once the straightening is complete, he began to curl the bottom part of my hair.
He used a number of medium sized curlers so that the curls will look bigger than what I had previously.
He then connected the curlers to the digital perm machine, which heated up the curls for about 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes, it is time to fix the curls and straight hair that he created.
He applied cream neutralizer on the top section of my hair first. It certainly felt nice and cool after the hot curling perm.
Next, he applied the neutralizer to the bottom part of my hair and put in a roller to fix my new curls.
It is finally time for the last hair wash of the day!
Sen first washed off the neutralizer on my hair before he applied the post treatment.
This intensive post-treatment helps to close the cuticles so that my hair will feel smooth and not as dry / frizzy afterwards.
After spraying it on, he combed through the entire hair to make sure that the treatment is absorbed.
Sen then left the hair treatment there for about 5 minutes while I took the time catch some shuteye.
While Sen was blowdrying, my heart was doing little dances by itself as I'm really looking forward to see how my first rebond perm will look like!
Will it be too flat? Too messy? I wonder.
Sen didn't just blow my hair dry, he went the extra mile to teach me how I can blow my hair dry so that I can achieve the nice curls back at home.
He suggested me to just a bit of curling lotion so that I can make the hair curl a bit more easily.
Here's a preview of how it looks.
What do you think?
I totally LOVE IT.
Doesn't look like I did rebonding at all because the curls and the straight part all looked SO NATURAL.
The fringe too, flows naturally from the front to the back.
Are you excited to see the FINAL RESULTS?
OK, here's quick reminder of how my hair look like before.
And now after!
I love how the curls accentuate my previous hair colour giving the ombre look as well.
This is my first time doing a Rebond Perm and I can only say that I'm SO GLAD it's with Sen.
He doesn't just dismiss my preferences like what other salons tend to do. For example, I was really worried during the haircut because I've been to other salons where they told me they will cut 1 inch but end up cutting 2-3 inches. With Sen, he gave me EXACTLY what I asked for so I felt as if my hair is safe in his hands. He also reassured me along the way, promising that my hair will not be too flat after the rebond perm and he certainly delivered.
Call me vain but I just can't stop playing and flipping my hair after the rebond perm because my hair is a lot softer and more manageable now.
This is how my hair looks like two weeks later. Note that I didn't properly blowdry it or style it... and I just finished playing bowling when I took this photo :D
Haha, love my new hair so much!
My hair looks a lot more womanly rather than aunty now... and it looks so much better that even my mom and my sisters complimented me on my new hairstyle! Yes... even my "Embrace my curls" sister. She was worried that my hair will look very straight afterwards but am relieved that I still had nice curls.
My daily hair maintenance has been cut from 1 hour to 15 minutes blowdry... it is so fast that my mom commented on it as well.
I'm just thinking... Why didn't I go for rebond perm earlier?
THANK YOU SEN and Act Point Salon!
Can't wait to shout out to the world how much I love my new curls! :D
