Like many Singaporeans, I am an ardent fan of massages. If I have the time (and budget), I try to sneak in a massage once every 2-3 months to give my body the pampering it deserves. Recently though, I've been turning to an alternative massage option that I feel is more time and value-effective: head spa. Everyone is different but for me, I like the scalp and shoulder massage the most in a full body massage. Maybe because I sit at the desk for long hours and frequently feel stressed, massage of the head and shoulders relieves the deepest aches that plague me. Beyond relaxation though, I've been going for head spas more frequently because they also help to solve another problem of mine - hair thinning.
Head spas at salons are very much like facials for the scalp: they wash and clarify the scalp during the massage, then apply hair tonic that is readily absorbed. This process helps to unclog pores at the scalp, slow down thinning hair and even promote hair growth.
Relaxation and effectively slowing down hair thinning all in one? Why not?
Since then, I've been really curious about head spas and have been going around different salons to see which gives the best head spa in Singapore.
Read on to find out how the head spa differs here!
We absolutely ADORE the salon decor at Walking on Sunshine.
It feels like we entered the fairytale story Alice in Wonderland each time we come here.
The beautiful flowers, the natural light and the surprises lurking at each corner... there is so much to love.
The decor isn't the only thing we like here though.
The stylist team here is one of the strongest we've seen with very experienced Korean, Japanese and local stylists here all in one roof. Many of them are good in hair colour, perms and various specialties but my insider knowledge tells me that there is a good-looking Japanese stylist here who is DARN good with head spa (along with hair colour and cut)... and he is none other than Shinji-san.
Don't you think he's very good-looking?
Just look at me salivating over him.. tsk..
Shinji doesn't just look good though.
The charming stylist escorted me to the seat and immediately started to check my scalp to see what my issues were. After some checking, he shared that my scalp is generally healthy but lies on the oilier end of the spectrum. There is also some pinkish scalp at certain areas suggesting sensitivity.
What Shinji recommends is to use the right scalp products from Shiseido's professional range of scalp treatments to deal with my scalp oiliness and sensitivity. So yes, the Walking on Sunshine's Healing Forest Head Spa doesn't just include a pampering head massage, it incorporates a professional scalp treatment from Shiseido to actually cleanse and nourish the scalp.
Once the consultation was complete, he escorted me over to the hair wash area.
He used the Shiseido shampoo catered to my scalp condition to shampoo my hair and also performed a head massage at the sink.
Shinji's pressure was firm yet gentle, with techniques that were definitely good enough to lull anyone to sleep.
Back at the seat, he applied a gel essence to moisturize the scalp before massaging it in. The gel essence contains adenosine, a unique growth factor that helps to prevent hair loss, as well as AP stimulator to moisturize the scalp and Ononis extract that strengthens the cuticle and makes the hair more resistant to damage.
He applied a generous portion of each before massaging into the scalp.
Oh this was my FAVE part of the head spa.
My eyes were closed so I didn't know what he was doing... but I can only say that it felt damnnnn good!
Legit one of the best massage I've had.
The massage at this point was so good, my eyelids felt so heavy and even fell asleep at this point.
To ensure deeper penetration, Shinji used a red laser afterwards to run through the entire scalp.
There is no pain or discomfort from the laser but it actually helps the scalp absorb the ingredients better.
Shinji then applied a dense foam that softens the scalp to make it even easier for the first gel to penetrate. The foam makes the scalp feel warm afterwards!
Lucky me get another go at Shinji's awesome massage.
And its time to go for yet another hair wash.
If you are wondering, yes, the massage here feels as good as it looks!
Next, my hair was covered by the cloth while a hot towel is being applied.
Needless to say, another chance for a quick nap!
Back at the seat, Shinji towel-dried my hair and applied a scalp essence, which helps to promote hair growth. He mentions that it is most effective at this point to use the scalp essence as my scalp is cleansed and now more open to absorbing nutrients.
While the scalp essence is being absorbed, Shinji proceeded to give a relaxing shoulder massage...
He proceeded to blow my hair dry afterwards.
And the head spa is complete!
If a shiok head massage along with professional-grade scalp treatment that actually tackles hair loss is your idea of a perfect head spa, you should definitely not miss Walking on Sunshine's Healing Forest Head Spa. The head spa incorporates Shiseido's professional-grade scalp treatment with Shinji's amazing head massage skills for the ultimate balance of pampering and effectiveness in solving your scalp issues. Even though this is more of a scalp than a hair treatment, my hair felt very soft and moisturized afterwards as some of the nutrients help to repair the hair.
The entire setting is also very naturey and relaxing, making this an ideal hair experience after work or in between shopping to renew and rejuvenate yourself! Walking on Sunshine even throw in complimentary healthy chicken salad, perfect for that quick perk-me-up!
Add a hot and charming Japanese stylist who'll attend to you throughout the entire process and give you beautifully blown dry hair afterwards, you've got a MUST-TRY hair spa for that special occasion!
