Hello, I'm Chief Editor of Beauty Undercover, Agent G.
Like many Singaporeans, I am an ardent fan of massages. If I have the time (and budget), I try to sneak in a massage once every 2-3 months to give my body the pampering it deserves. Recently though, I've been turning to an alternative massage option that I feel is more time and value-effective: head spa. Everyone is different but for me, I like the scalp and shoulder massage the most in a full body massage. Maybe because I sit at the desk for long hours and frequently feel stressed, massage of the head and shoulders relieves the deepest aches that plague me. Beyond relaxation though, I've been going for head spas more frequently because they also help to solve another problem of mine - hair thinning.
Head spas at salons are very much like facials for the scalp: they wash and clarify the scalp during the massage, then apply hair tonic that is readily absorbed. This process helps to unclog pores at the scalp, slow down thinning hair and even promote hair growth.
Relaxation and effectively slowing down hair thinning all in one? Why not?
That got me writing about the 10 Reasons Why Head Spa is The Newest Hair Service We Can't Live Without. Since then, I've been around different salons to see which gives the best head spa in Singapore.
Read on to find out how the head spa differs here.
I've always wanted to try Hair Salon Tokyo Michaela because it is thus far the only hair salon linked to a cosmetic company back in Japan. They have their own inhouse haircare products, Michaela Pharmatica, developed with unique ingredients such as bird's nest and watermelon rinds.
While a head spa technically focuses on the scalp, I find that most ingredients does help nourish the hair as well.
Given that my hair condition is a little dry right now, I think a head spa is sorely needed.
So I made an appointment with the handsome mature stylist Kenta at Hair Salon Tokyo Michaela.
It is easy to see why the salon is particularly popular among office workers in the area as well as Moms with children during off-peak hours; the salon is spacious and the assistants / stylists very comfortable with children.
My head spa appointment of the day is with Kenta, the salon manager. He isn't the one performing the head spa though. Upon arrival, he served me beverages and snacks to get me ready for the day.
Don't you love how cute the cupholder is?
Next, he checked my hair condition and shared with me about the different head spas + hair treatment combos available and the price, so that I can decide what works for me. Owing to the price difference, I decided to go for Original Scalp Treatment by Michaela (costing $80), an affordable head spa option to see how their scalp treatment is like.
I was escorted to the hair wash area where the assistant began the head spa treatment.
I love how the seat automatically reclines so you can lie down to get comfortable. I didn't manage to get my video taken this time but here's how it was for Agent I when she permed her hair at Hair Salon Tokyo Michaela.
A brownish liquid was first applied to my hairline.
This liquid is a clarifying lotion that helps to get rid of all the dirt, dead cells and gunk from the scalp.
The assistant massaged it all over my scalp, helping it to be better absorbed while I doze off.
A towel was wrapped around my hair to accelerate absorption of the clarifying lotion into the scalp.
Warm water was poured onto it for the same reason. At this point, it is safe to say that I was failing to stay awake.
How can you not take a nap when you're all wrapped up, warm and have someone giving you a relaxing scalp massage?
That's not the end of the massages.
The hair assistant washed off the clarifying lotion and started to massage/shampoo my hair!
A super relaxing head massage! I'm convinced that this is the reason why many people love head spas as much as I do. They really know which areas to press for ultimate relaxation.
Alas, the massages had to end. With the gunk all cleared, it is time to apply some serum that will be more easily absorbed into the scalp to promote scalp health!
Then, it was back to reality
as the automatic chair recliner moves me back to the sitting position.
Back at the seat, Kenta helped to blow my hair dry
and styled my hair so I was ready to take on whatever the day threw at me.
Look how silky and shiny my hair looked!
Even though this was just a head spa, my hair also looked more moisturized afterwards.
Michaela Original Scalp Treatment is a perfect perk-me-up during lunchtime or after work as it incorporates a number of relaxing massages that relaxes and makes your scalp happy. The price will also not break the bank at an additional $80 (if you are already intending to come here for a haircut) or $110 by itself. Given that you will also get your hair styled afterwards, you should definitely consider coming here before an important meeting or even a date!
