I am Agent QM, an undergraduate at one of the local universities in Singapore.
I'm currently in my fourth year and is therefore graduating! To maximize student discounts, I've been trying various hair salons around the West (where I stay). Unfortunately, none of the salons I've tried was good enough for me to return. Not sure if its because I tend to go to the big salon chains, the experience wasn't very good. The stylists at the big salon chains tend to be very pushy and gossipy at times; they are also unwilling to just do a haircut, always pushing me to do treatments, hair colours and stuff. I did not enjoy my experiences and therefore have been jumping from salon to salon.
That is... until I came across No. 8 Hair Studio. I googled for hair salons in the area and came across No. 8 Hair Studio on Beauty Undercover. There seems to be a lot of good reviews on the salon, so I decided to give it a try... after all, it is near my place, so why not?
The experience here is SO much better than the usual hair salons I've been to. The ambience is very relaxing, the stylists do not hardsell me to do the things I don't want to do and best of all, they gave me a cut that I'm very happy with.
As the experience was so good, I liked them on Facebook to keep abreast of any promotions they might have.
True enough, they organized a Student Giveaway a few weeks later. I participated immediately. Lo and behold, I was selected as one of the winners... yay!
The appointment was set on a weekday afternoon and my designated stylist is Jimmy, who attended to me previously.
I'm glad he didn't just go ahead with whatever he wanted because it was a complimentary makeover.
He took the time to listen to what I wanted and tried to design the right hairstyle for me.
Here is how my hair looks like now:
Kind of dry and boring I know.
I went to Korea for exchange previously and loved the Korean perm I did there.
I tried to achieve the same effect in Singapore but my previous stylist at another salon failed miserably, leaving me with frizzy, limp, thin and tangled hair that is super difficult to manage.
My ideal hairstyle is therefore to get back the Korean-style perm I had previously... and try colouring my hair as well! Initially, I showed Jimmy a Rose Gold Hair colour I saw on Beauty Undercover. However, Jimmy shared that the colour requires intensive bleaching and is therefore not suitable if I'm doing a perm. He therefore promised to do a similar hair colour with a darker shade so that I can have my rose / pinkish hair with my perm!
Can't wait to see how the hair will turn out!
Jimmy began by trimming the ends of my hair and removing the very damaged parts of my hair.
He didn't cut too much because my hair is not very long in the first place and requires a certain length to make my hair look nice.
The cutting process therefore, didn't take very long.
Next, Jimmy decided to pre-lighten my hair first He chose to do so because the lightening step actually opens the cuticles and shortens the time required for softening the hair via perm and is hence less damaging. It also means that the hair wouldn't be so dry afterwards.
After application, I had to wait about 20 minutes for the hair colour to fully penetrate my hair but luckily I had my phone to accompany me throughout the process!
Finally, it was time to go for a wash.
Jimmy was very gentle and ensured that water does not get into my face unnecessarily.
A comfortable experience.
Can you see that my hair is already lighter now?
After application of base colour, it was time to apply the perm lotion. The perm lotion softens the hair and helps to break the existing bonds for the perm so that it can be resculpted later.
I do however need to wait another 20-30 minutes for the perm lotion to do its job and break the bonds.
When it looked about ready, Jimmy came over to check my hair and declared me ready for a wash!
Yay, my favourite and most comfortable part of the process: hair wash!
Back at the seat, Jimmy used his very cool Dyson hairdryer to dry my hair relatively quickly.
With the help of another stylist, both of them curled my hair into rolls.
And soon, my hair looks like this!
He connected the rolls to a digital perm machine
and set it to heat up the rolls.
After about yet another 20 minutes, it was time to remove the rolls.
Very curly isn't it?
Jimmy assured me that it wouldn't look like this at the end.
He brought me to the basin for my 3rd wash of the day!
After drying my hair...
This is how my hair looks like right after the perm (before the colour).
Isn't it pretty?
and Yes, it looks a lot like what I did in Korea <3
Love how the curls look so natural!
Frankly I can just walk out of here right now and I'd be happy.
However, there was a part of me that nagged me at trying something new for hair colours so we proceeded with colouring it rose gold!
Jimmy then began the process of highlighting my hair with the rose gold hair colour he promised.
After waiting to process the colour for about 15 minutes or so, it was time for the last wash.
And now for the FINAL blowdry
Just a case you forget how my hair looked before:
And now After
What do you think?
Most people require bleach to get to my colour but I'm glad to be able to get this hairstyle the moment I wake up... thanks to the perm and pre-lightening services done by Jimmy! I especially love the streak of gold that makes my usual drab self look a lot more happening ;)
I must however say that the long side fringe took some getting used to. It frames my face better but it is a little harder to keep it neat in my opinion. Other than that, I love the colour and the perm!
It's been more than two weeks since the hair makeover and the reddish hair colour has faded. However, the hair colour faded beautifully into a brown that is not brassy at all! I'm also glad to report that my hair is still very maneageable after the perm and colour, which was a huge relief for me.
At least, I don't have to fight my hair every day now!
Thank you Jimmy and No. 8 Hair Studio for spending over 7 hours with me to make me look good and completely transform how I look.
This is a fantastic hair makeover I had never tried before, one that made me look completely different from what I was before. I like this change and am happy to see this new side to myself!
Would definitely be coming back for more haircuts, colours and perms and would definitely recommend friends and family to No. 8 Hair Studio because the stylists here are just a notch above the rest: skilled, patient and willing to listen to your needs and concerns without being pushy.
One of the best hair salons I've experienced thus far!
