15 Things You Should Do After a Break Up

Published on Mar 30, 2017

Is this the breakup season, yo?

We're hearing about friends breaking up left, right and centre...and if you haven't heard, Katy Perry just split up with Orlando Bloom! Brangelina split up a while ago and even in Singapore, celebrity couple Daniel Ong and Jaime Teo called it quits.

Breakups are hard and it's even harder to get through them when you are feeling alone. However, how down or angry you may be feeling, just remember that it's not the end of the world! Some people enter your life to teach you a life lesson, but not to stay.

Before we talk about breaking up, let's talk about getting together! Make sure you and your partner are on the same page- whether you are dating to test the waters, or dating with marriage in mind.

It changes everything!

Here are some things we think are good for you after a breakup!

1. Hide Your Relationship Status on Facebook

Facebook doesn't show any changes to "Single" or "It's Complicated" on your newsfeed. However, if you don't want your kaypoh friends to ask you about it anyway, why not hide your relationship status on Facebook?

You can do so by:

1) Go to the "About" section on your timeline and scroll down to the "Family and Relationship" section

2) Change your status to "Single"  and your privacy settings to "Only Me"

Change Facebook Relationship Status

3) Save!

Off you go, kaypoh FB friends!

2. Give yourself some alone time

Go for a solo trip to heal! Perhaps a place you've always wanted to go to but never had the chance? Grab this opportunity! A holiday is the upgraded version of a pamper day. A whole week to yourself in a new environment is sure to change your mindset and keep you distracted. You can also try a new look during your holiday by giving these holiday hairstyles a go!

3. Break up photoshoot

Just for the giggles, if you and your previous partner are on good terms, this might be something fun to try! A breakup photoshoot with your ex is a good way to relieve tension and reduce awkwardness!

4. Detox from your ex

#DontTextYourEx! No more texting, no more calling! Some people stay in good terms with their ax, but if it hurts seeing that person, get away! It is totally fine to cut off contact as sometimes staying friends brings back too many memories.

5. Delete or hide all photos with your ex

Reminiscing over past photos may do more harm than good. It will make you look back and you might do something silly ... like trying to get back together again?

Surrounding yourself with positive people always boosts your mood. Friends and family will be there for you, always. Spend your time with them instead! Having them around will remind you of other people who are still there for you and love you

6. Block your ex on social media

We all know that routine - stalk your ex, try not to double tap, sigh out of relief that he is still single, repeat. How long will that go on? Days? Months When he isn't single anymore, or when you get over it, don't wallow in self pity!

7. Create a breakup playlist

Music always helps the soul. Don't add 'your' song though, it will just make you think of the good times. Music changes our mood quickly - fast music helps us to work out while slow music makes us feel at peace.

8. Meet up with your friends and let yourself bask in their concern

9. Talk to a counsellor

If all else fails, you should find a professional to talk to. Maybe you don't have close family or friend relationships, but that doesn't mean it's the end! You should never bottle up your feelings. A support group might make you feel less alone and if all else fails, you can consult a counsellor, like what Fiona Xie did after her breakup.

10. Get a life changing haircut

You know what they say, "a woman who cut her hair is about to change her life". Something about a fresh new haircut signifies confidence and a clean slate. And it seems Katy Perry feels the same way! Afterall, she did get a new 'do when she broke up with Orlando Bloom.

11. Get a work out at the gym

Not only will you look good, you will feel good too! Working out not only reduces stress but releases endorphins too. And as the saying goes, "looking good is the best revenge!"

12. Pamper yourself with a facial/massage

What better way to relax than having a pamper day! Have a facial/massage, get your hair/nails done, do whatever helps you to unwind! You can check out the latest promotions here!

13. Put up a damn hot display pic

A definite confidence booster!

14. Write a song

Pull out your pen and paper, it's time to be Taylor Swift! Note down your feelings - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Writing everything down will be therapeutic, and you might even gain a beautiful song from your love story.

15. Forgive and forget

Holding onto anger will not do anyone good. It will only bring harm upon yourself. Being angry will cause you to make rash decisions and say harsh things. Do not do something you will regret like flaming your partner on social media.

There is no need to air your dirty laundry for everyone to see. We don't think your future employers or sponsors will like that either!

Forgiveness doesn't mean you have to be best pals with them, or that you believe they will learn from their mistake. They can still be the same ol' person but that doesn't mean you shouldn't move forward.
