As your wedding day approaches, the list of things you gotta do seems to grow longer and longer. Unfortunately, we're here to add another item on the list: Hair Colour.
Your hair makes up 80% of your face. No matter how flawless your skin is, a dated hair colour / hairstyle may take much shine away from your deserved limelight. To prevent that from happening, we talk to makeup artist hairstylists from COVO Japanese Hair Salon for some tips on choosing the perfect hair colour for your wedding day.
There are a few of us who have not coloured our hair before but that is possibly a minority. Most of us have coloured our hair at least once in our life, which means that your hair is likely to have at least one demarcation between your hair regrowth and your previous hair colour.
To make sure that your hair is perfect, I recommend all brides to arrange for two appointments. What we do on each of the appointment is not always the same but for some, you can possibly expect colour correction for the first appointment as well as highlights and balayage on the second to brighten up the entire look!- Yui from COVO Japanese Hair Salon
It's best to do this a month before the wedding so you have sufficient time for both dyes to settle in but it's still near enough for the colour to look its best.
Not all of us are fortunate enough to have soft and silky hair close to our weddings. Even if you haven't done many chemical services before, it is possible for your hair to look dry and damaged due to our humid weather and usage of harsh shampoos that may dry out the hair.
We recommend customers with hair that looks a little dry to go for darker shades of brown. This makes your hair look healthier than it is and hides any imperfections! ~ Asako from COVO Japanese Hair Salon
As much as bright hair colours are gorgeous, remember that YOU are the highlight of the day. Don't let your hair colour take the attention from you or the gorgeous dress you've spent so much time to search for.
Instead of going for neon pink or yellow, consider going for warmer tones of brown such as copper brown or rose gold for those of you who are relatively fair. These colours add warmth to the skin colour and accentuates porcelain fair skin. For those of you who are a little more tanned, a caramel brown base with cool goldern highlights will balance out the warm tones and brighten the overall complexion. ~ Kiyo from COVO Japanese Hair Salon

You may have selected the most sophisticated updo but leave your hair dark as night and your photographer won't be able to capture the details put in by your makeup artist. Consider adding highlights and balayage to add depth and definition to your hair for that stunning photo with your updo.
If you already have an idea of the updo you want to do, share the photos with us so that we can highlight the specific sections that will be brought out by your updo!~ Megumi from COVO Japanese Hair Salon
As you do more research on gorgeous hair colours, it may be tempting to try a hair colour you've never tried before... but your loyal stylist should advise you against it.
You don’t want to look back in a few years (or decades) and regret over the hair colour because it doesn't feel like you. That's why we don't recommend making drastic hair changes specifically for your hair colour. ~ Natsumi from COVO Japanese Hair Salon

Wondering what an ideal hair appointment before your wedding should we like? We follow Bride-to-Be Agent E on her hair appointments to COVO Japanese Hair Salon before her wedding.
Hi, I’m Agent E, a community manager at a blockchain firm. I met my fiance in school a few years ago and I'm glad to say that we're finally tying the knot in 2019 :)
I hope that I did not become a bridezilla. However, a wedding is still once in a lifetime, so I really look forward to the day and hope to make it as perfect as possible.
There are lots of things to get ready but one of the first things I did was to find a good makeup artist. One of the first few tips my makeup artist gave was to get my hair done.
As you can see, my hair is just jet black. I used to dye my hair a lot in Uni but stopped for almost 5 years due to my job restrictions. Not doing anything to my hair did really allow my hair to be in a much healthier condition than before!
My Makeup Artist however recommended me to colour my hair so that the wedding updo can be seen more clearly.
I've considered a few hair salons and even went to a local hair salon that was recommended by an influencer. I was quite disappointed in their service that I didn't want to go back to them (I had to wait 2 hours even though I made an appointment!).
Given my negative experience, my makeup artist recommended me to try COVO Japanese Hair Salon. It was quite well reviewed online and highly recommended by her friend Agent G. Since Agent G is the Chief Editor of Beauty Undercover, well, I thought, why not?
I must say... that turned out to be the BEST hair decision I've made in a long time!
Let me share my experience with you below and you'll understand why.
I corresponded with COVO Japanese Hair Salon on Whatsapp before actually going down. They recommended me to come twice - first time to do the base colour and second time to refresh the colour right before the wedding.
They were so meticulous and even asked me if I could share photos of my dresses as well as my desired hairstyles before I went down.
Here's an example:
As you can see, my hair was still jet black then.
I met Yui for the first time at my first appointment at COVO @ Outram Park a month before my wedding and I can say that I fell in love with her (and the salon) immediately. There are so many things that I like about them! Firstly, Yui herself is so pretty and friendly, I found it really easy to chat with her! At first I was worried that she's Japanese so it will be harder to communicate to her what i want but I really didn't have to worry. Her English is good! Secondly, Yui has a lot of experience with brides so she knows exactly the concerns and worries I have on my mind, and could answer them all... even before I ask her about it. Thirdly, the salon is just so gorgeous! I love how each cubicle has so much space and privacy because there is a partial separation between each cubicle. It makes me feel even more valued and comfortable than usual. There is a fourthly or fifthly but if u ask me to list them all, I think it will take the whole day.
I didn't manage to take many photos that day but here's a photo of me taking a random selfie with Yui. She's so pretty right?
Anyway, she manage to transform my hair from:
The colour was so pretty that I started braiding my hair every day after the colouring! All my colleagues were oo-ing and aah-ing over my hair colour and asking where I did my hair colour. I feel especially fortunate I went to COVO as another colleague of mine complained about how she paid so much for a hair colour that is uneven and is not even the colour she desired.
And that's not the end of my experience with Yui.
To make sure that my hair looked tip top, we arranged for yet another session to refresh my hair colour days before the wedding.
With a few more days to the wedding, I came down for my final hair colour visit with Yui. To check on how her recommendation was, Agent G actually came down for my second visit at COVO. So I manage to have more photos taken at each step of the way.
As usual, the visit started with a consultation with Yui. If you didn't get to see her properly, here she is!
Gorgeous isn't she?
Her hair is as usual, beautiful and immaculately styled!
She asked me for feedback on the previous colour and also checked on the updo I intended to do on my wedding day.
My makeup artist provided feedback to layer some fringe from my nose to my chin area for better styling effect.
I shared with her what my makeup artist said and she listened attentively as she confirmed my requests.
Given my prior experience with her, I was totally at ease with Yui. She isn't someone who just listen in one ear and out the other but really took the time to understand what I say and incorporate into her hairstyle design.
I knew that she would be able to deliver so I just relaxed and allowed her to pamper on me.
Yui mentioned that most of the balayage and highlights were done previously so all she had to do was to refresh the hair colour with a single colour base to tone the hair.
It's not easy to see from the outside but once you lift the hair, you can see the bleached highlights she carefully inserted previously!
She coloured the roots first before the rest of the hair to ensure an even application.
Once that was done, the colour was left to rest for about 20 minutes
before it could be washed off.
One thing about COVO, Yui attended to me from the start till the end!
I loved it because it made the experience feel very exclusive.
And you know what, her head massage is SO GOOD!
I was pretty stressed the last few days because of the wedding and I can tell you that she somehow managed to rub the stress away.
That wasn't all.
To make sure my hair looked soft and silky, she suggested going for a treatment.
Before we begin though, she brushed my hair out to rid it of any knots and tangles.
When she was done, she applied the famed Tokio Inkarami to my hair.
Tokio Inkarami is apparently one of the best hair treatments raved on Beauty Undercover! It is supposed to be very effective for making hair look soft and silky without weighing it down. I'm glad COVO offers it too!
Once the hair was coated thoroughly, my hair was steamed with this device to improve penetration of the treatment into the hair.
After another 20 minutes, the treatment is washed off.
My final hair wash of the night!
Back at the seat, Yui blew my hair dry.
She gave the front pieces of my hair a trim and got rid of any dead ends.
As agreed, she layered the fringe area to lighten the front part of my hair
All that was left to do is style my hair. Using a large curling wand, Yui wrapped large sections of my hair to create large and loose waves.
Are you ready the final reveal?
Not that I want to say... pretty right?
It looks good in photos already but even more so in person (and in videos!)
My hair just looks so healthy and lively, I can't help but do a shampoo advert to show how pretty my hair is!
I am one lucky girl; as a bride, there's a lot to worry about but at every step of the way, I'm very fortunate to have angels around me to help me make sure the day is perfect for me. With regards to my hair, I'm particularly grateful to my Makeup artist and Agent G who recommended me Yui from COVO Japanese Hair Salon.
I have another colleague who is also a bride to be. She wasn't as lucky as me and had her hair done at another hair salon where she paid a lot for subpar hair colour that she disliked. Seeing how beautiful my colour turned out, she made an appointment at COVO as well.
I couldn't have asked for a better stylist and would like to thank her for the amazing job done! Yui didn't just make the hair perfect for that day, she guided me through from the first time I talked to her till my last visit with her. She was always so encouraging whenever I shared photos with her and gave me great tips on how to make my hair perfect. When I mentioned about going to Hokkaido for a honeymoon, she even offered to give me a Hokkaido guide book... this is how attentive she is!
THANK YOU, YUI <3
I'll definitely be back soon for my next colour.
For those keen to see how my hair colour turned out on the actual day, here are some preview photos shared by my photographer.
