Who Says Having Kids Mean That You Can't Look Hot? 10 Beauty Hacks All Mommies Need to Know

Published on May 08, 2019

Happy Mother's Day!

Some of us became a Mom a couple of years ago and for some of us, more than a decade ago.

Regardless when motherhood descended upon you, it is undeniable that our children have forever changed us: our identity, our career, our bodies.

And for most of us, we believe this is a positive thing. There is something magical about a child's pure love that heals whatever scars you didn't even know were hurting and gives you the strength to pull through whatever obstacles in your way because there is now someone who wholly depends on you for emotional and physical sustenance.

Nevertheless, this special arrival necessitates sacrifices, sacrifices that take the form of me-time, income and sometimes even friends and self-confidence. It also takes away a lot, especially in the physical arena.

Do you sometimes look back upon your old photos and reminisce about the old times when your figure is still svelte, skin still taut and memory still sharp?

Why reminisce though? You CAN get back your old self, and even improve look better than before motherhood if you try.

We at Beauty Undercover believe that motherhood and looking good are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Yes, there are periods of time when your appearance takes the backseat but once you ease into your daily life with your childcare all sorted, you may want to invest some time to make yourself feel good and boost your own confidence!

Here are 10 beauty hacks that can make busy moms look hot, quick!

1. Marie Kondo Your Wardrobe

Frump is something many of us fight but to which many of us succumb. We wear the same uninspired outfit over and over and somehow just.. give up on ourselves.

We put so much time and energy into our kids that time for ourselves is often that last minute before running out the door when we pull our hair into a ponytail, slide on the same yoga pants and t-shirt that we wear to NTUC.

The first call of duty is therefore to know your style. What was your style pre-kids? What did you love wearing? What made you feel dead-sexy? And why aren’t you wearing those things anymore? Why should your kids look amazing but not you?

Ditch the baggy clothes and put on some well-fitted ones and watch yourself look hotter IMMEDIATELY.

You’ll be able to enhance your figure and you’ll be more prone to doing something outside your home. What you can do to save time is to build a wardrobe of well-made pieces that you love and that can be worn with each other.

You can choose to go shopping or even shop online at places that allow for free returns so you can understand what the popular styles are there out there. We especially heart local brands such as Editor's Market, Love Bonito and Lara'J for their stylish yet comfy pieces!

2. Get into Shape

The first thing you notice when you start buying clothes is that it actually motivates you to get in shape. We don't all have to fit into size S to look good but returning to our pre-pregnancy size tends to make it easier for us to fit into dresses we used to like.

OF COURSE all of us want to get into shape... but HOW? There is NO time to sleep... where do I even find the time to get into shape?

For Agent G, she started by controlling her diet. Someone once told her Weight is 80% diet, 20% exercise so what she did was to adjust her diet and she lost close to 8 kg in 3 months and maintained the 12 kg weight loss for more than a year now.

Beyond diet, however, it is important to restart your exercise routine because it helps to give you more confidence and energy throughout the day. There is not much time in your schedule, we know. Hence, it is important to find the exercise you LOVE. for it is only when you love it, you will dedicate time for it and willingly take away time from your babies for it. This may mean starting one day a week or asking your partner out to exercise with you.

3. Get Rid of Grey Hairs

Is motherhood giving you so much stress that your hair is starting to turn grey?

Grey hair is, unfortunately, one of the most obvious signs of ageing (and sometimes motherhood). Hence, it is important to conceal it with hair colour. You can do it DIY but those who do that often may find your hair turning dry very easily with the colour turning patchy thanks to an imperfect colour job at home.

Hence, it may be good to schedule a regular appointment with your salon to retouch your hair. Going for a brown or burgundy shade can make you look much more done up. It also draws attention to your hair and away from your face/clothes so you can get away with a simpler look!

For those who are more adventurous, you can even take a step further and go for ash grey and pink colours like this Hot Mama did at Gene by Ginrich.

Those of you who are more concerned about hair and scalp health may even want to consider going for organic hair colour. As you have to retouch your roots pretty often, organic hair colour is arguably the better choice as they do not contain harmful chemicals like ammonia or PPD and is healthier for the scalp.

4. Repair that Frizzy, Damaged Hair

Your hair is one of the first things people notice when they meet you.

Leave your hair damaged and frizzy and you're bound to look older than you are.

Keratin Treatment for Mom

Hot Mama JZ shaved years off her face by simply going for Keratin Treatment, which removed the frizz from her previous perm. Keratin Treatment also helped to reduce the time it took for her to maintain her hair from 30 minutes to less than 10 minutes to get her hair dry!

If you're not that keen to straighten your hair, you can also consider going for treatment perms like the Mommy @ivianathui tried at Focus Hairdressing.

The perm gave her hair definition and curls while repairing her damaged hair.

5. Get a low-maintenance haircut

Keeping your hair cat-lady long will definitely age you and leave you looking frumpy. Long hair will also accentuate the hair thinning that many Moms tend to experience. We, therefore, recommend you to go for a good low-maintenance cut every few months to get rid of all that split ends and frame your face in such a way that it highlights your best features.

Beyond looking good, think of all the time (and shampoo) you save when you wash your hair!

Whatever you do, make sure your haircut has layers and depth. The classic hairstyle that makes a woman look older and dowdy is the cut where everything is the same length all over. As long as you have a dynamic, flattering style, the length of your hair truly doesn't matter.

There are ladies who can rock both short pixie cuts or long layered cuts... most importantly have the confidence and you'll be able to rock any look you want.

6. Go for Eyelash Extensions

Don't have time to put on mascara and go for full-on makeup? Eyelash extensions are your best friend.

They balance and accentuate your eyes, and make you look and feel beautiful even when you don't have anything else on.

7. Keep Your Skin Glowing and Go Make-up Free

As No. 6 alluded, you don't always have to put on makeup. You can save that 20 minutes a day if your skin condition is good enough for you to walk out in. There is, after all, no greater compliment when people talk about how good your natural skin is!

This may, however, necessitate investing in that monthly facial appointment to plump up your skin and keep it smooth and glowing... a worthwhile investment as it also keeps ageing at bay!

Agent G, on the other hand, got addicted to the extraction facials at The Bund Beauty after seeing how her pores became smaller and face colour less uneven after going for facials there.

8. Go for Eyebrow Embroidery

Another essential step to eliminate each morning is the drawing of the eyebrow.

9. Choose Gel Manicures and Pedicures over Conventional Mani / Pedi

Being a mom doesn't mean that you need to give up on your beloved manicures and pedicures. You don't have as much time to maintain it so consider going for gel mani and pedi that lasts for a longer period of time.

10. Master taking Selfies

Don't have time to do all the above?

Sometimes, all we need is a bit of a confidence booster in the form of a well-taken selfie to make us feel hot and beautiful.

Our final thought: hotness is not just about how you look but how you feel.

You're strong, you're powerful and there's only one of you who is holding up the family like the champion you are.

At the bottom of your heart, you know you're HOT stuff so let the rainbows radiate outta you this Mother's Day!

Cheers to all Mommies out there!
