Top 5 Trending Hairstyles in Singapore (Updated 2021)

Published on Dec 23, 2020

2020’s been a weird year y’all. Possibly the one year that both felt excruciatingly slow and also like the months flew by. We’re so close to the next chapter of this crazy time though, and I’m sure we’re all eagerly looking to 2021 to bring us a fresh change in the world situation and some light at the end of the tunnel.

As you ring in the New Year in just a few days, take some time to reflect and focus on how this past year has served you. Take stock of both the good and the bad things that happened, hold each treasured memory tightly in gratitude, and then let them go. Release the baggage of 2020 and move forward into the excitement that a new year will bring!

This Author has already spent some time refreshing her bedroom décor, decluttering her wardrobe, clearing out the old… there’s just one thing left – a rite of passage for any woman looking to change up her life – the quintessential movie moment of getting a new hairstyle for the coming year!

Now this list was compiled with some thoughts in mind; COVID will still be a reality in the new year, and precautions like masks will probably be around for quite some time (Oh when can I wear my nice lipsticks again?), and socially distant working and interacting is still in effect. But with that being said, here’s a quick look at some of the upcoming hairstyles about to hit the fashion scene that will both help ring in a brighter 2021, and also help zhoosh up that mask wearing life. Let’s go!

1. Hidden Hair Colour: Earloop Highlights

As we mentioned before, Masks are probably here to stay for quite some time. Love them or hate them, we gotta live with them, so as the old saying goes: if you can’t beat them, join them! Why not then choose a style that might prettify up your mask wearing look?

Trending Purple Earloop Highlights

Earloop highlights do just that. If you’re like me, you’ve already invested in some pretty sweet looking mask designs that have been the rage since we were all told mask wearing was mandatory (side note: if you haven’t, why not look for some local homemade designers, and get some to support local businesses!). Just as perfectly done eyebrows frame the eyes, earloop highlights really help make your masks pop and frame the look, balancing out the features and adding colour to your style.

Best for: People who want a tiny pop of colour that requires minimal bleaching, that works well with mask wearing.

As we have talked about before, Earloop Highlights avoid extensive bleaching damage to the most visible and vulnerable parts of your hair, and helps focus the look on just the locks framing your face nicely. It’s super work friendly, and especially if you are still telecommuting, is practically invisible in Zoom work calls, but would be so vibrant and popping when revealed by putting your hair up. It also works with all hair lengths so you wouldn’t even need to trim your hair much if you wanted to keep the length.

It’s also really popz with celebs at the moment, with celebs like Itzy’s Ryujin and Queen Bey herself wearing them.

2. Hair Cut: Textured Short Crops

A great cry of “Hallelujah!” went up across the land when masks became mandatory in March, as those who had always felt self-conscious about their jawline (or lack thereof) now had a fool-proof way of hiding their insecurities and not have to worry about them for a while. Another smaller cry went up when people started to realize that with this came the idea that “Hey, maybe this is the perfect time for me to try out that pixie look I’ve always wanted to try!”

Now as much as I’m a staunch believer in anybody can carry off any hairstyle they wish with the right attitude, it’s true that short crops and pixies are exceptionally difficult looks to carry out; having the right face shape being a huge reason why. Now this is where the mask-life comes into play; it takes the emphasis off the jawline and now you are free to try out any short haired look you like!

Best for: People who want to look cute while wearing a mask

This is why short crops are one of the new trends of 2021. It’s a gorgeous look for the new year, and really pops when the mask is on. On top of that, I think we all want a little less stress and hassle in life in 2021 after the year that was 2020.

Short crops tend to be easier to wash and dry, with less time needed to manage and condition. It makes it a better style to have than long hair cause it will start looking unkempt and haggard if not maintained.

Personally, wearing a mask in humid Singapore can be hot enough already, why not relieve some of that heat by having cute hair that also cools your neck and lowers the temperature! There is no better time to try a bob or even your dream pixie cut.

3. Perm: Advante Perm

As I mentioned before, 2020 was a hectic year, and I know that one of the resolutions I want to carry with me into 2021 is to try and have less stress in different areas of my life. Honestly, one of the easiest ways to do that, is to have a stress-free hair style too. Now having a voluminous, full-bodied hairdo without having to style it every day sounds like the perfect solution for me! Introducing the Advante Perm.

Best for: People who want a gorgeous, voluminous, and low-damage perm

Advante Perm is the newest kid on the block and is certainly the most advanced we've tried.

Advante Perm got our attention primarily because it's damage is so low, it can perm even damaged hair.

Don’t worry, the Advante will be here to help fix up the frizzy damage done!

Frequent perm connoisseurs will also be happy to note that the low damage allows you to perm your hair a few times in 2021 and it wouldn’t be nearly as damaging as a normal perm. On top of that, it only takes a few hours, avg 2-3hrs per session, so you can pop in and out quickly in the midst of your post Phase-3 social calendar to get the do done!

4. Hair Colour: Subtle Balayage

After the extravaganza of a year that was 2020, most people just want 2021 to pass by smoothly with no big shakeup. And honestly, who needs a big hair disaster in 2021 when we’ve already got enough on our plate. So if you don’t wanna risk having a hairdo you aren’t sure if you would like, then go for the ever classic subtle Balayage look.

Balayage Colour (Shuji) by SAD Hair Design

Most people tend to mistake subtle for boring, when it most certainly isn’t! Also, given the world situation, you’d want to make sure your hairdo and hair colour remains easy to manage and easy to work with in case (touchwood) a lockdown happens again and you aren’t able to get to your salons in due time.

Now I enjoys getting my hair done in bright signature, eye-catching colours (think bright purple) when I’m about to go on a holiday (it’s way more fun this way and the pics look amazing!), but with travel still kaput for the year(s), I’m not wasting my precious hair health going crazy colours just to stay in Singapore, so definitely looking to more subtle colours to change up my style.

Best for: People who want a natural and effortless new colour

Colour-Airtouch honey blonde

Another colour technique that has really taken off in 2020 and we foresee will be going on strong in 2021 is the Airtouch Balayage, which we first saw done at Ravissant Hair Salon (see above). AirTouch Highlights, was created by Moscow hair guru Vladimir Sarbashev. He pioneered this by a blow-dryer to gently push shorter hairs and internal layers down and out of the way, so that only the needed remain, which would be what was coloured. This helps the different hair strands and colours blend seamlessly.

Airtouch Balayage

It’s so gentle on the hair, with less bleaching, less intense backcombing and less tugging on the scalp and hair. It’s also a much faster procedure so you can get in and out of the salon quick. You also don’t end up having that overprocessed yellow-blonde look at the end, and the regrowth looks super natural and beautiful.

5.  Hair Colour:  Maple Brown

Now if cuts and perms aren’t your thing, and you’re still a die-hard dye fan like myself, here’s a top trending colour for this coming year: the Maple Brown.

chez vous maple brown

A classic Ash brown colour, Maple Brown has been the new favourite in 2020 and its popularity will definitely carry over to 2021. With the economy the way it is, not many people are still keen to really dye their entire head a one-note colour, on account of how expensive that could rack up to be. Also, no one really wants to spend all day sat at a hair salon with your mask on now do you? That’s so 2020, and we are not here for it.

That’s why we loved when we found out that Chez Vous Hair Salon had just pioneered a new hair colour design: the warm maple brown.

Best for: People who want a different hair colour that is wearable for daily outfits and the office

chez vous maple brown

Chez Vous has always been a leader in pioneering trending colours, previously being the Mushroom Brown style. Right now the maple brown colour is everyone’s wanderlust dream colour. Inspired by autumn foliage, it gives you that lovely autumnal vibe even though you can’t physically travel to the woody locale of your dreams. It uses some techniques like a reverse balayage, face-framing highlights, and ear highlights to create a low-maintenance style that adds more dimensions to hair, gives it more warmth, more glow and styles it beautifully without being over the top.

This particular colour is also a perfect warm and dark colour that is more suitable for Asian skin tones, and really complements it well.

With all these styles in place what better way to ring in the brand new year with a brand new you! I know we’re all hoping for 2021 to be a brighter, happier time, and I can’t think of a better way to start off the year on the right foot than with a brilliant new look and a brilliant new vibe.  See you all in the New Year!
