Hi! I am Agent F and I am currently working in the education industry.
To be honest, I'm not the usual girly girl who takes hours to doll up before leaving the house. To me, practicality and convenience wins glamorous hands down; I would rather trade those hours for more zzz time! Babysitting my niece and nephew is my weekend job and I think it's almost impossible to look glamorous when you are chasing after a 20-month-old.
In addition, I am an instructor after all so I have to look neat and tidy all the time; an easy-to-maintain hairstyle is, therefore, important to me.
This is my hairstyle right now.
It is a fuss-free long bob that I find very easy to maintain. I like short hair because I don't have to spend hours washing and blowdrying it. It also accentuates my sharp chin.
I must however admit that my hair is a little flat. As my hair is very straight, it just somehow sticks to the side of my face. Not the most flattering hairstyle I know. The very straight look also makes my facial edges a lot more obvious.
So yes, I did consider perming my hair. In fact, I did so 8 years ago. The curls looked OK but I didn't feel that it suited me because the curls were too curly and somehow made my face look even skinnier. Hence, I stayed clear of perming ever since... until I came across some photos of Cushion Perm by Picasso Hair Studio.
Cushion Perm by Picasso Hair Studio
The curls were barely noticeable but I could see quite a bit of volume on my hair. This got me intrigued... could I have the same type of perm?
Just as I was thinking about it, I had a friend who asked if I was keen to be a hair model for Picasso Hair Studio for Cushion Perm.
As I was already interested, I was glad to have this opportunity.
We made an appointment on a weekday afternoon.
This is my first time at Picasso.
The decor at Picasso is very inviting and modern, with easels that reminded me that hair is art.
Although it was a weekday, Picasso Hair Studio at North Bridge Rd was already very busy. I was greeted and escorted to the seat on the second level. The staff was very friendly and gave me a brief introduction of the place since it was my first visit. I was then served with a drink, snacks and a hot towel with hand moisturiser.
Soon after, Mavis came by and did a thorough hair consultation with me.
She asked me various questions and also educated me about my hair condition etc. My hair is so straight that it surprised her a little that I have not done rebonded my hair before.
While conversing with me, took some notes and drew on the paper to show me the kind of design she was thinking about. She proceeded with the treatment after getting my agreement.
Mavis guided me to the hair wash area nearby. She was very gentle with the hair wash and careful in making sure that water does not get onto my face.
Back at the seat, she started the hair service with a haircut.
She cut only a little off the ends to keep the hair healthy.
She also trimmed my fringe to make it frame my face better.
I feel that my hair already looked much better after a quick cut!
She was however not yet done. After the hair is blown dry, she checked the hair again and give it yet another trim.
Once the cut is complete, Mavis started preparing for the application of perm lotion.
She placed a visor on my forehead to avoid getting any of the lotions into my eye accidentally.
Mavis explained that the Cushion Perm I was going to do includes both a root perm and a perm for the rest of the hair. The root perm has to be done first before the rest of the perm.
This is my first time getting my roots permed. I'm pretty excited about that because my crown is a little flat; hopefully the root perm will give my hair at the top a bit more height while still looking natural.
The way Mavis does it was to use small perm rods and apply perm lotion to it.
This is how it looks like with all the small rods in.
Mavis then put in the bigger rods to give a more natural wave to the rest of the crown.
I'm not an expert on perms but even perm enthusiast Agent G says that this is something really new! Most stylists would simply use a straightener to create the root perm effect. This way takes a longer time but creates curls that last longer and look more natural.
Mavis explains that this is a new technique that Picasso Hair Studio spent many hours practising and experimenting. Most root perms either doesn't last long or creates a kink when hair grows out. Their special technique makes sure that the root perm grows out naturally while keeping it long lasting!
Next, perm lotion is applied to the rest of the hair
Before it is curled.
Mavis started adding more and more perm rods until it looked like this.
She connected all the rods to the digital perm machine.
I can't help but take a selfie at this point to show my hubby how strange I looked. haha!
After about 20 minutes, Mavis removed the rods. Before the perm clips came off, Mavis preempted me that my hair will look very curly after she removed the clips and that it wouldn't look like that at the end, in case I got a shock.
I thought that was very attentive to her as I had mentioned before that I do not like my hair to be too curly.
She then applied neutralizer to fix the curls.
A basin was put around my neck to make sure that the solution doesn't get to my clothes.
While the neutralizer was left on my hair for processing, Mavis removed the small perm rods on the top of my head.
And its finally time for the hair wash!
Mavis informed me that the usual package includes a post-treatment from Kerastase, which is applied after the hair wash.
She sprayed a treatment onto my hair then applied the second step by running the treatment through my hair.
When she was done, I am brought back to the basin for the last wash of the day.
My hair looks like this now!
A little curly when its wet.
Mavis assured me that this wouldn't be the case when the hair is dry!
She proceeded to dry my hair.
Mavis mentioned that blowdrying is very crucial in determining how the perm will look like in the end.
Hence, she taught me a few tricks to make it easier.
Firstly, the hairdryer should be pointed from up to down.
I should also use my hands to gently twirl my curls to achieve the look I want.
Same with the other side!
Even though I am a newbie at this, Mavis did not lose her cool and was very patient throughout the entire process.
When I got all confused with how to curl my hair using my fingers, she asked me not to look into the mirror as the mirror will further confuse me. Her small but very useful tips were helpful.
I observed her carefully to make sure that I can repeat what she taught me back at home!
I think I look quite different now, as opposed to just now? :)
Are you excited to see how my hair looks like?
Here's a quick recap!
I am definitely more than happy with the results.
I look like a totally different person after the perm... and definitely turns the feminine side up a few notches.
I feel so much prettier with this new hairstyle and my hubby cant be happier with a "new, Korean" wife!
As mentioned, I am not the most hardworking lady in the world. However, I am happy to report that this perm doesn't take too much of my time.
I use a styling mist in the morning and the hair will look manageable throughout the day... yay!
I'm really relieved to note that it didn't add much to-dos for my everyday routine and still gives me the added volume I've always wanted.
It has been quite a few weeks since my perm and I am still receiving compliments on my new hairstyle.
Close friends know that I've always been complaining about how fine and volume-less my hair used to be. This perm transformed my hairstyle totally, so much so that my friends are all asking where I did my hair.
Due to my personal experience, I can confidently recommend them to Mavis and to Picasso Hair Studio. I am very impressed with Mavis who was very gentle, professional and composed throughout the service. She answered all my questions patiently and always made sure that I was comfortable and that the clips are not hurting me. Mavis is also not too chatty and doesn't ask many personal questions, so she made me feel very comfortable interacting with her, a stranger I saw for the first time.
It isn't just Mavis I'm happy with though. It is clear that the entire crew at Picasso is a closely-knitted team who enjoy working at the salon and helping each other as some stylists will also come by and chip in to help out or give comments when they can.
Hence, this makes the experience all the more personalised and sincere.
Overall, I'm very very impressed with the final result at Picasso and the awesome service... I am considering to come back for a re-perm in a few months time and as mentioned, will confidently recommend them to any lady with fine and flat hair like mine!
