Every time we think of Japanese Hair Salons, we think of good skill in hairdressing, amazing service, relaxing ambience... and expensive prices. Honestly, higher prices are actually more than justified given that the experience here is often better than in other salons.
It therefore comes as a huge surprise when we found the highly instagrammable Devonshire Japanese Hair Salon charging lower prices than equivalent Japanese, Korean or even local hair salons in Singapore.
Read on to find why we're so in love with this place!
Just a few steps away from Somerset MRT is Devonshire Japanese Hair Salon, a gorgeous hair salon located in a shophouse right behind Orchard.
The salon itself looks so good, it was actually used as a filming location for local Channel 5 drama "Tanglin"! Walk up the spiral stairs and you'll find the salon area, which looks like this.
The place isn't just pretty, the salon is anchored by Japanese Stylist Obara and his team: Erika (Japanese), Osegi (Japanese) and Doris (Local). The suave Obara has been in Singapore for many years now and have been raved by many Japanese and locals in Singapore for his amazing haircut and colour. Erika, on the other hand, is amazing with low-damage hair colours, using minimal bleach or none at all to achieve work-friendly hairstyles that look amazing! Osegi may be the Japanese newcomer here but he is really good with treatments and haircuts as well.
As much as the Japanese hairstylists are famous for their omotenashi, we're actually very impressed with Doris, a local hairstylist mentored directly under Obara for the past 3-4 years. Thanks to his intensive training, Doris' haircut is so good that many Japanese ladies actually go to her for a more kawaii yet easily maintainable hairstyle.
Her sweet and helpful personality makes it easy for us Singaporeans to go to her, since she understands our preferences and needs really well. It's really fun chatting with her too, as Student K will tell you.
As we know, the Japanese take pride in using only quality products and that's the same here with Devonshire. Believing that customer relationship is more important than one-time visits, Devonshire make sure that they use the very best quality hair products to give customers the result that they seek. That's why you'll find that they offer reputable products that tend to be naturally-derived - such as Davines, Tokio Inkarami and O'Way.
There are many salons offering promotions but when you actually go down, they will get you to add in treatments and colours without being transparent about it. At the end of the day, you end up paying way more than what you expect (and what they advertised).
There is nothing of the sort here at Devonshire Japanese Hair Salon. Believing that healthy hair is the foundation for beautiful hair, Devonshire insists on including treatment in EVERY hair service. This means that you can't come here for just a haircut. Their cheapest hair service here is Haircut + Treatment at $90. Many of us would think that $90 for a haircut may be a little steep but when you include a complimentary hair treatment that would cost hundreds elsewhere, Haircut + Treatment at $90 is definitely a steal!
That's not the only steal here. Their Hair Colour + Head Spa will only set you back by $190 and their Hair Colour + Tokio Inkarami Treatment $260 - all before promotion. Prices are even more irresistible during promotions:
In the recent National Day Promotion, they are having Tokio Treatment + Full Head Colour at just $260 for TWO.
Students can also look forward to 20% off all hair services, so don't forget to bring your student card along when you come for your appointment.
This price is unheard of among Japanese hair salons and even among local hair salons!
Most importantly, the stylists here are Japanese and being Japanese, they do not hardsell or even upsell, making the experience especially pleasant. No stress for your hair and even better, no stress for your wallet!
Looking for more than hair services? The good news is that Devonshire Hair Salon also offers eyelash services with their sister brand EyeDesign.
You can get high quality lash extensions done by Japanese lash artists at affordable prices in the adjoining room. They use lashes imported directly from Japan and are incredibly skillful to make sure the lashes last really long.
And here's another piece of breaking news: Devonshire Japanese Hair Salon is going through minor renovations to include a Lounge area within the salon! This Lounge area is specially catered towards customers looking to work outside of their home and will be well-stocked with Japanese snacksi to keep you satisfied when you're feeling peckish. We hear that some of these snacks are so unique, you can't even find them in Don Don Donki... That's definitely another thing we look forward to whenever we go to Devonshire next!
Hi, I am Agent K.
I just completed my freshman year in University and will be entering my 2nd year soon. I dabbled in hair colour once in a while, even colouring my hair with box dye twice but never did anything too crazy. Truth is, how crazy can DIY hair colouring get? I remember being disappointed the first time when the box dye says purple brown - when the outcome was just brown without any hint of purple.
TBH, that sort of suits me because I'm one of those who prefer to look a bit more understated - no bright pink or purple for me!
Most of the time, I go to the hair salon for a trim or a haircut and that's it - no chemical services. My last visit to the hair salon in December 2019 didn't do anything to motivate me otherwise. I wanted to try this particular hair salon because it was highly raved online and the photos just looked so good. So I decided to make an appointment as a pre-university pampering makeover gift for myself.
I went for a balayage hair colour, perm and express hair treatment and my hair looked like this afterwards.
It looks pretty okay but guess how much it costs?
Since then, it scared me off hair salons. With prices this high, I would be better off colouring hair myself and going to the salon just for haircuts.
But COVID happened and somehow I just let my hair grow longer and longer until it looks like this 1.5 years later.
My hair is so long, it is almost touching my hips.
I knew I need to do something about it. Luckily for me, I met Agent G.
Not every hair salon is like this! I know of a Japanese hair salon that offers really good hair colours, cut and treatments AND great service at prices below $200. No hardselling, upselling or opaque pricing too! ~ Agent G
The hair salon she mentioned? Devonshire Japanese Hair Salon. I read about it on Beauty Undercover and also checked out their instagram; the salon looks gorgeous and the hairstyles look pretty good indeed. Prices?
Their set menu for hair colour and treatment comes to only about $260.. without any promotions.
I made an appointment immediately.
The hair salon is easier to locate than I expected. I followed Google Maps after exiting Somerset MRT and I got to the entrance in no time.
The reception area is gorgeous with a clean minimalistic interior that helped me relax when I enter. The salon itself was located on the second floor; I particularly loved the squarish spiral stairs as I went up.
The salon side is cozy but still gives each customer quite a bit of personal space.
My stylist Doris attended to me immediately. She looks young and trendy with her fully bleached hair but is very professional during the consultation.
She asked me several questions to probe the type of hairstyle I like; no pixie cut for me but otherwise, I'm OK.
Based on my answers, she proposed to do haircut and highlights. I initially wanted shoulder length hair but Doris shared that it will be hard to manage as the hair naturally bends outwards at that length. So she proposed for my hair to be slightly below the shoulders.
As for hair colour, we browsed through Google and eventually decided on face-framing highlights. Knowing how I don't often go to the salon, Doris wanted to design a hair colour that still looks good when my hair grows out. She suggested face-framing highlights as she wanted to use the highlights to better frame my face. It also doesn't require too much bleaching so my hair won't be overly damaged.
Can't wait to see how my hair will turn out!
Doris segmented my hair into 3 parts and began cutting my hair to the intended length.
Goodbye $800 perm!
They've been weighing down on me for so long, I can't wait to say good riddance!
Next is the lightening process. Doris started with several sections behind the ear.
She weaved through to get 3 distinct sections and prepared it for bleaching.
To make sure that the highlights blend in more gradually, Doris would brush the bleach in the opposite direction near the roots. This way, the hair regrowth will look more natural.
She also intentionally partitioned my hair in a slanted gradation; Doris says this helps to make the highlight more natural as it mimics how the hair will look like when I tuck my hair behind the ear.
Finally, she wrapped my highlights in aluminium foil and heated it up for 30 minutes.
In the meantime, she didn't just leave my hair unattended. She would check on the bleached parts and applied more bleach where necessary.
After 30 minutes, the colour had finished processing.
It was time to wash off the bleach.
Doris escorted me to the shampoo area, removed the foils from my hair and washed my hair with a shampoo.
Then, she proceeds to apply the hair colour to the roots of my hair.
Once satisfied, Doris started to spread the toner to my whole hair.
When Doris was sure that the colour has finally set it, she gave my hair another good wash.
That's not all.
As Doris explains, every hair service here comes with a treatment and the particular treatment I opted for is Tokio Inkarami.
With my hair just lightened, the treatment comes just in time to repair any damage from the bleach earlier.
She sprayed the Tokio inkarami onto my hair and massaged it in.
To let the Tokio Inkarami treatment penetrate more deeply, she wrapped a warm towel around the head to heat up the hair and encourage penetration.
This was the first time I had the hot towels on me and I must say that it feels really good!
Feeling really pampered here!
The hair treatment didn't end there; Doris applied Tokio 0 and Tokio 1 to my hair before massaging it in. After another 30 minutes of processing, she finally rinsed my hair and escorted me back to my seat.
After that, Doris meticulously trimmed my hair to achieve a nice U-shape at the back.
Finally, my hair is ready for a blow-dry. I can already see my highlights appearing during blow-drying.
As a final touch, Doris gave my hair a dry trim to make sure the result will become as we envisioned during consultation.
Ready for the unveil?
What do you think?
I initially wanted something a little more grey but it seems as if my hair doesn't seem to take the bleach well. There is a possibility that this is the case due to the previous treatment I did some time ago but I think the eventual ash blonde highlights look pretty good too, don't you think?
As Doris promised, the streaks of highlights contour my face without looking too bright or making me look "ah lian" .
And it looks absolutely gorgeous from the back as well.
Even when I tie it up, it looks great!
Not going to miss the chance to take a few photos as I walked down the spiral staircase.
Thank you Doris for the beautiful hair colour and your incredible hospitality. I enjoyed my time at Devonshire Japanese Hair Salon and hope to have the chance to come back again for cuts, colours and treatments in the future!
I haven't had highlights before so TBH, I wasn't 100% used to it at the beginning but it has really grown on me and now, it is chef's kiss HAHAHAH
I have friends complimenting me on it even though my hair has already grown out quite a bit, a testament to how long lasting and low maintenance it is. I think the streaks draws attention to my facial features far more than full head colour ever did so I'm really glad to give this a try.
Most importantly, my hair still feels healthy and smooth because the colour minimizes damage and also becaues of the Tokio Inkarami treatment.
This is my first time highlighting but it will not be the last! Will be back soon to find you, Doris!
