Tired of boring, straight hair? I'm sure at some point in time, the thought of perming our hair to fancy things up without needing to style it daily has crossed our minds... And then we start looking up salons, get a shock for seeing the price, and bury that thought altogether.
At first glance, getting a perm seems straightforward. You just, well, pay for the price of the perm. But those who've gone for one will tell you that that's not all. Depending on salon, you may have to top up depending on the following:
1) Whether you would like to add a Haircut
If you really want to get the same effect that your favourite celebrities are donning, you'll need a nice haircut. The haircut sets the foundation of the perm and where the curls start and end. Unfortunately many hair salons do NOT include haircut in the price of their perm, so do check with the salons if they don't - and add the price of your haircut into the overall budget.
2) Whether you are going for a Cold Perm or a Digital Perm
There are generally two types of perms: Cold perm vs Digital Perm. Cold perms produce curls that are more natural when wet and more defined when dry while Digital Perms produces curls that appear softer and more natural when dry. The process of Cold Perms are also generally faster as they do not use heat during the process whereas digital perms take slightly longer. Hence you will find that cold perms are usually priced LOWER than Digital Perms. A number of promotions would quote the lower-priced cold perm in their packages so do ask for the top-up required if you prefer to go for the Korean-style Digital perms!
3) Whether you should add a Treatment
What good are the curls if they turn frizzy weeks after? A pre and post-treatment is something we highly recommend to keep your curls looking good for longer. The perm process itself weakens your hair bonds quite a bit so doing the right treatment before and after can greatly reduce the damage and frizz - saving you more money later on.
So ladies, that is exactly how we end up paying a hefty amount for a perm. Some of us go to a salon expecting to pay $200-300 after end up paying almost TWICE the amount at the salon.
Is that NECESSARILY the case though? Hoping to keep prices affordable, some salons are offering all-in prices and promotions that keep the price of perms below $300 while ensuring that the final perm still looks good. Want to know which salons they are?
Read on below!
