Hello, I'm Chief Editor of Beauty Undercover, Agent G.
Like many Singaporeans, I am an ardent fan of massages. Before COVID-19, I'll try to sneak in a massage once every 2-3 months in Johor to give my body the pampering it deserves. COVID-19 has however made it impossible for me to do the same in Singapore.
This got me wondering, what could be an alternative option that is more time and value effective? The service that came to mind is HEAD SPAS and SCALP TREATMENTS.
(Read here if you want to know the difference between scalp treatments and head spas)
Everyone is different but I like the scalp and shoulder massage the most in a full body massage. Maybe because I sit at the desk for long hours and frequently feel stressed, massage of the head and shoulders relieves the deepest aches that plague me. More importantly, I know that I've been facing hair thinning in recent years. Head spas are very helpful as they are very much like facials for the scalp: they wash and clarify the scalp during the massage, then apply hair tonic that is readily absorbed. This process helps to unclog pores at the scalp, slow down thinning hair and even promote hair growth.
Relaxation and effectively slowing down hair thinning all in one? Why not?
That got me writing about the 10 Reasons Why Head Spa is The Newest Hair Service We Can't Live Without. Since then, I've been around different salons to see which gives the best head spa in Singapore.
I've previously tried Room Japanese Hair Salon, COVO Japanese Hair Salon @ Katong, Walking on Sunshine @ Orchard Central, Hair Salon Tokyo Michaela @ Riverside Point, Ravissant Hair Salon and the unique Dry Head Spa by Branche Japanese Hair Salon.
There was however one Japanese salon I've been itching to try the head spa from... and that's Flamingo Hair Studio. You see, they opened a gorgeous outlet at Tiong Bahru which offers both hair and lash services.
I've been going there religiously every 3 weeks as their affordable lash extensions start from just $40 for retouch!
Everytime I'm there though, I'll look on enviously as the customers get a head spa by Koki.
Does it feel as good as it looks?
Well, looks like there's only one way to find out. I made an appointment for both the head spa and an eyelash extension in the same day for a combined hair and lash treat!
(P.S. NOT SPONSORED)
Easily one of our favourite Japanese hair salons, going to Flamingo Hair Studio is to us an experience in itself. As always I could feel my heart slow and mind calm down as I step into this sanctuary located within Tiong Bahru.
Usually I'll go straight to the eyelash room but today is special - I'm getting a head spa from Koki!
He escorted me to a seat in the inner area of Flamingo Hair Studio and embarked on the consultation.
But first, scalp diagnosis.
Your scalp is oily over here but dry over there. So I recommend differing treatments to target different parts of the scalp. ~ Koki
Based on the diagnosis, I have combination scalp. This makes it all the more tricky for homecare but even during the head spa itself, he mentions that he will try to cater to the different skin conditions at these areas.
With consultation done, Koki escorted me to the wash area.
But before that, a dedicated area to put my spectacles. I can't bear to leave them but I must as the head spa is mostly performed at the wash basin with my eyes closed.
Koki then escorted me to the wash area where he prepared a selection of eye masks to choose from. You see, most of the head spa is done with my eyes closed so the very thoughtful Flamingo Hair Studio also included eye masks within the head spa so my eyes can get some pampering at the same time! So thoughtful isn't it?
At random, I chose SAKURA. I may not be able to see Spring Blossoms in Japan but at least, I can apply some of that spring blossoms for my eyes, right?
After selecting, Koki gave me a pillow, prepped the towels to make sure I won't get wet and gently lowered me to the basin.
That's where we started the head spa proper: hair wash of course!
Koki used the Milbon Purifying Gel Shampoo, formulated specially to remove excessive fatty acids from the hair and replenish hair moisture at the same time. This unique, non-drying foaming gel physically attaches to the fatty acid buildup and lifts it away without damaging the scalp and hair.
Seeing how much foam is generated, I can certainly believe that!
My scalp never felt so clean, with Koki's thorough wash and the refreshing menthol leaving a cooling sensation.
Some scalp follicles are already unclogged from the hair wash but to make sure that the stubborn ones are open as well, Koki prepared a steaming machine to warm up the scalp.
Then, Koki applied the cleansing spa gel. Just like how exfoliation is an essential part of a facial, the cleansing spa gel contain ingredients that physically exfoliates dead skin and removes excess fatty acid on the scalp.
To make sure that the cleansing spa gel does its work, Koki then gently massaged it in.
Amidst the soothing citrus scent from the cleansing spa gel and the oh-so-amazing scalp massage, I couldn't help but fall into deep sleep.
Interestingly, the Milbon shampoo and cleansing spa gel isn't just good for the scalp. They contain silk which repairs the hair as well.
So while I'm taking a little nap at the sink, Koki took the chance to give my hair a good hair bath.
When he was done, Koki gently woke me up and escorted me back.
After towel-drying my hair, he applied the Milbon leave-in Scalp Moisturizer. Like any facial after exfoliation, the scalp moisturizer replenishes ingredients that the scalp may not receive sufficiently on a daily basis - this time with makes use of botanical extracts such as Ginseng, Thyme and Loquat.
Of course, it is not enough just to apply it. Koki gave me yet another thorough scalp massage to make sure it goes deep in.
As a bonus, he added a really nice back massage to end the head spa.
One last blowdry later and we're done!
That didn't spell the end of my time at Flamingo though. After the relaxing head spa, I was escorted to the Eyelash Studio for my usual lash extension with Aya.
I plonked my butt down on this very comfortable recliner as Aya thoughtfully covered me with a blanket.
As usual, Aya embarked on the consultation at this point. I've however been here quite a few times so all I have to say is "the usual" and Aya would get the style and length of lashes I liked.
Though of course, you can choose from her huge selection of lash extensions, be it normal lash, flat lash, volume lash at c curl, cc curl, d curl at different lengths. As you can see, she has everything you need right there.
With the style confirmed, she put a tiny pillow beneath my head and embarked on the lash extension. To avoid the glue from getting into any part of the eyelids, Aya applied white stickers. Then she started cleansing the lashes with cotton buds, soaked in cleansing liquids.
Aya shared with me previously that this is essential to making sure that the lash extensions last long; dirt on the lashes is a common reason why some lash extensions drop faster than expected.
When the lashes are sufficiently clean, Aya started the extension process.
After about 40 minutes, the extension is almost done!
To dry the adhesives, she uses a mini fan to accelerate the process.
One last brush with the
And these are the result after Aya removed the tapes from my eyes.
Compare this to what I had before and you'll know why I'm such a fervent fan of Aya's lash extensions!
Thank you Koki and Aya for an amazing afternoon at Flamingo Studio at Tiong Bahru.
With my heart, mind and lashes refreshed, I feel ready to take on whatever challenges coming for the week ahead.
Can't wait to come back again!
