Best Keratin Shampoos after Keratin Treatments in Singapore

Published on Sep 20, 2021

As we've shared in the article Best Keratin Treatments under $300, a Keratin Treatment should set you back by about $200 - $300 at most salons in Singapore. It goes without saying that most of us would want for such an expensive treatment to last as long as claimed - 2 to 5 months (depending on your chosen Keratin Treatment).

The longevity of the treatment, however, depends on many factors. The most important? Your shampoo.

Those who've used the WRONG Shampoo will tell you that you're likely to face the following issues:

  • Excess Keratin peeling off your hair
  • Uneven hair texture: Flat and straight in parts and frizzy at others
  • No more silky soft feeling as the Keratin Treatment faded super fast

It doesn't have to be that way though... if you choose the right shampoo. Want to know what to look out for? Here's a quick and dirty guide to choosing a good post-keratin shampoo:

The first one. Avoid Shampoos with Sodium Chloride

This has got to do with hair chemistry but the moment Sodium Chloride touches your hair, it will react with Keratin in such a way that it disintegrates the Keratin, dries up your hair and undoes your hair straightening results.

So if it is not obvious by now, shampoos with sodium chloride are a NO-NO after Keratin Treatments.

Secondly, it is NOT as clear-cut if Sulfates are Harmful.

Yes, we know. A lot of literature online will tell you that you have to get sulfate-free shampoos to make your keratin treatment last as long as possible and that is true to a certain extent.

There are many types of sulfates out there. Some of them are used in detergents and then, there are others that are used in haircare. While harsh sulfates used in detergent will definitely get rid of Keratin really quickly, sulfates in harcare are usually gentle on the hair and scalp. In fact, haircare manufacturers have in recent years done much R&D to counteract any harshness with cushioning ingredients that minimize fade. Hence, you will find that there are actually Keratin-safe shampoos that contain Sulfates!

But why do we need sulfates in the first place? Sulfates are cleansing agents a.k.a. surfactants that help to create a lathering effect to remove oil and dirt from your hair. Without sulfates, you may find the shampoo not lathering enough, giving the "siap siap" feeling that somehow makes the hair feels dirty afterwards. So if this is something you do not like, you may still want to keep sulfates in your shampoo.

At the end of the day, a shampoo still needs surfactants to cleanse your hair and scalp. When sulfates are removed, the haircare manufacturer tends to replace sulfates with other surfactants – which can either be harsher or gentler on the hair depending on the grade, quality and formulation with other ingredients. So according to our expert hairstylists, it is important to look at the overall formulation rather than the presence of sulfates alone to determine if the Keratin Shampoo is suitable for you or not.

The Third Thing, Balance between Moisture and Protein

You won't see that in your first Keratin Treatment but for some of us returning for subsequent Keratin Treatments may find that our hair is harder and rougher than before.

You may not realize it but the problem often lies in the shampoo.

A lot of us get excited over the word Keratin whenever we look at a shampoo, so we get shampoos with very high levels of Keratin. Little did we know that it is possible to get too much of a good thing. While Keratin enriched shampoos help to replenish missing proteins, repair damage and improve structure of the hair, too much protein can harden our hair structure, dehydrate our hair and even cause it to be brittle.

The key is therefore to use a shampoo that strikes a good balance between moisture and protein. For a balanced routine that lengthens the effects of your Keratin Treatment, Keratin experts at Chez Vous Hair Salon often recommend its customers to use shampoos that focus more on moisturizing and conditioners / masks that focus more on replenishing proteins after a Keratin Treatment.
