Rude Colorist

I was recommended Monsoon in KL by a Malaysian friend, and I made the mistake of booking an appointment for colouring at the Novena Square branch without researching more, just because her hair was amazing. I really regret that. The colorist was rude, refused to listen and wouldn't respect my wishes. Initially, I wanted vivid balayage hair, but after discussing it with him, I decided it was too harsh for my hair and asked him to work with my existing colour (red) and just add highlights and lowlights in purple, blue & red to add more depth to it. This was what I got (Pic Below):

I was really unhappy, but the stylist insisted that this was perfect and refused to offer to fix it. Not only that, I was quoted about $400 for the colouring and $90 for a treatment, and it ended up becoming $627.

$627 for this bad die job that looks like I did it myself at home?

Quick trim

It is one of the most reasonably price hair salon around Novena area if you wanted a haircut. $38 (nett) for the leading stylist ( cheapest) which come with cut + wash + blow. Nothing fancy. No additional charges for my extremly long hair which goes all the way to the waist length. Some salon will have additional charges.

Went there twice. The hair wash was so-so. But if you need a quick trim, then this is recommended. Shld be done in an hour.

Forcefully massaging my scalp

Went down today to get a trim and as I thought they were supposed to open at 11am. I was there around 11.15am, requested for a creative director and was told to wait as the director was out buying something. I found out later that he is the Salon Manager as well. I was then shown the seat and given the drape. No drinks or mags offered, no worries, wasn't there for that. Luckily, I didn't have to wait long before a male stylist turned up and asked how I would like my hair cut.

Briefly few mins into the cut, a presumably regular client of his showed up. He did not bother to excuse himself and went to attend to her. No worries here, short interruption only. He then came back and continued cutting for a moment, before going back to attend to her again. This time he came back apologizing for the interruption and continued with my haircut. All in all I think my haircut was finished in around 15 mins. It was all good. I didn't have too much of an expectation anyway but the haircut was nothing to shout about, in my opinion. I have had much better cuts elsewhere. Was then told to wait while he asked for someone to help with my rinse. I waited 10 mins, while he was already attending to his female client, he told me the staff were out buying something. So, I continued waiting while there were already several other customers busy chatting and having their hair taken care of in the salon. (I believe some are stylists as well)

Waited yet another 10 mins and still nothing. Just how long do I need to wait to get my finished haircut rinsed? I turned around and asked him. He then stopped, went to the back of the shop and viola, out came one of the staff who is able to help rinse. Already annoyed at waiting so long, this burly staff thought I was angry at him and began forcefully massaging my scalp, to the point I had to tell him to be softer as it was so painful. Goodness, what kind of service is Monsoon giving? What kind of image are you trying to portray?

I have had been to this Novena branch of Monsoon a long time back when Jimson was around. None of this nonsense and hiccups. I just wanted a trim. Short and sweet. Wham bam, done deal, but instead, this lousy service and had to have my head squeezed so hard that it was painful. I will make it a point to never recommend or go back for this nightmarish experience.

Good experience

When to Monsoon two weeks ago (10th July 2013) after coming back from a whole month in India. I was at Ladakh, a cool dry climate part of India, and needless to say, my hair went dry along with the climate!

My locks needed a color and treatment, and I went to Monsoon pretty regularly. I try not to be attached to a single stylist because I believe that every stylist have different interpretation of beauty, and I’m pretty open to different styles.

I initially booked an appointment for 3, but a last minute meeting arrangement had me moving the appointment forward to 1 pm on the day itself. Much to my pleasure, the person on the phone was completely agreeable to it. good customer service, to me, is the first sign that the salon will be a good one!

Teddy Cheah was my stylist for the day. he asked about the treatment I wanted to do and what color I wanted painted on my hair. I went for dark (a change from the reds and browns I’ve been putting my hair through) for a more natural look. No hard selling. He told me that they have an ammonia free dye for extra $30. I was not interested, since i’ll be going through a treatment procedure anyway. he was nonchalant about it, which is a good thing!!! second sign that this salon will be a good one.

I have a benign tumor, the size of a small pea, at the top of my head, which I showed my stylist before he began. The stylist was super careful when he was at the vicinity of the tumor, even though its really not painful. when another stylist came to help brow dry my hair, he even warned his colleague to be careful. props for them!

I wanted (more like needed) a trim, so it was an extra $38 for a trim. nothing much, just 1 inch

overall, I had the hair color I wanted, soft soft hair, and a pretty good experience. I paid about… $200++

one problem though, they don’t seem to have magazines around :/ my handphone was dying on me, so at the last 20-30 minutes, I had to stare at blank space/ try to engage in a conversation with the stylist in broken malay. oh ya, starhub mobile phones signals are dreadful in the salon.

so if you are going to Monsoon, bring your own source of entertainment!

i hope this review helps.
toodles! xoxo

Will never recommend my friend to go to monsoon

On 24th November 2011 I went to Monsoon at Novena for hair changeI paid for $700+ but come out not to my requirement.
My hair is short above the neck And my hair is not long. is very ridiculous and is not worth the money to spend.
I was attended by stylist Pearly.
End up my friend and relative saying my hair style so ugly and not even. I am very regretted and so sad.
Rebonding straight perm charge $369.00 and colouring $260. is freaking expensive. The hair stylist will ask you to do this and do that but they did not let you know the cost. which I think is not right.
Other hair salon can do it the same at $300-$400.
This is my 2nd times visit. The first time cost about $250 still reasonable.
Is make me feel this salon is Hei Dian.
Once for all and I will never recommend my friend to go to monsoon.

comfortable place and cheap with the promotion going on

Hee hee, i went to monsoon’s main branch at novena square yesterday to redo my hair. my curly hair were gone. taking the 49% discount that monsoon now offer to their customer, i went to rebond my hair. Cos Cheater say my hair looks v aunty if i perm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :@

For the first time i did my rebond in less than 3 hours. usually it take 5!!!!!!!! and i also feel the difference between high class hair salon and the middle class. The lady who did my rebond is Addy Lee’s assistant (Addy Lee is Monsoon’s boss). She is v detailed, fast and wat can i use to describe her? Anyway just BEST, SUPERB. Raymond my usual hairstylist since Sept 2004 cut it v neatly too. i never doubt the way he cut my hair. a trust i always put on him. but this time i think this blur sotong man forgot to cut my hair in V shape!!!! must question him later this mth when i do my colour.

i was not v happy when raymond ask me to cut off my fringe but i never doubt his professionalism. i let him cut. initially dun get use to it after i left the salon, i think its pretty. haha That’s the new me….. what do u think ???? Cheater say i look like a doll. Jonathan ask y i cut like that. Not nice meh????????????????????????????

i strongly recommend everyone to go to monsoon’s novena square branch to cut. v v v v comfortable place and cheap with the promotion going on.
