Do you know how long your hair service can last

Published on Nov 04, 2016

In the pursuit of flawless hair, we are willing to dish out hundreds of dollars on hair services and spend hours sitting in a salon.

But is it worth it if the hair service is only going to last a mere week or so?

Find out just how long frequently sought after hair services last in our list below...

3-6 Months

1. Rebonding

Before vs After Rebonding at Flamingo Hair Studio

Since rebonding is a permanent hair service, you don’t have to visit the salon again to achieve the outcome until your roots begin growing and your natural hair texture starts to show. So, the exact amount of time depends on how fast your hair grows. For most, the roots will grow out between 3-6 months for those with slightly curly hair and perhaps 2-3 months for those with very curly hair.

There's no point rebonding over the rebonded areas as it will only make your hair more dry and tangled! Hence, remember to ask your stylist to only rebond the roots. This way, it will minimize damage to the rest of your hair which is already rebonded.

2. Digital Perm for Healthy Coarse Hair

Digital Perm by Act Point Salon

If you have healthy and relatively coarse straight hair that has NOT been bleached, congratulations!

This type of hair texture is BEST for hot digital perms as it can last you 6 months or more (depending on how well you maintain it). Even when your hair grows out, it will look like you did volume rebonding (naturally straight hair at the top and permed hair curls at the bottom) so it doesn't look strange!

Although digital perms at some hair salons can be very pricey, divide it by 6 months and you've got a really value-for-money hair service. Note however, that it will last this long only for ladies with coarse hair texture and relatively healthy hair for the first few perms.

3. Ombre / Balayage

If you are as lazy as Agent G, ask for an ombre / balayage hair colour instead of a full hair colour. An ombre hair colour is a colouring technique where the hair colour at the roots differ from the hair colours at the ends. A good hairstylist will be able to make the gradation really natural. If you keep your natural hair colour at the roots, you won't need to retouch the colour when it grows out, for months!

Just look at Agent G's hair ends! Even though her hair colour was done in March 2016, it was still very visible in October 2016. Superbly value-for-money, no?

For ombre and balayage, we would however recommend that you pair it with a perm (which means no bleaching!) or style it as the ombre effect comes out most nicely when combined with curls.

1. Keratin Treatment

Keratin treatments are famed for its ability to tame frizz and leave hair feeling smooth and radically manageable. There are various types of keratin treatments offered by countless of salons and they don’t come cheap. Depending on the type of keratin treatment you choose and the texture of your hair, salons say that keratin treatment should last you a maximum of 5 months.

In practice though, we find that many ladies find that the keratin treatment lasts anywhere from 1 to 3 months (again depending on hair texture, your stylist and type of keratin you went for). If you're intending to go for keratin treatments, don't skimp on keratin homecare products as it makes the treatment last longer.

2. Full Hair Colours

Normal hair colours refer to reds and shades of browns that do not require bleaching or only minimal bleaching. How long the colour lasts before turning brassy also depends on the quality of the hair dye the salon uses, but there are few things you can do to delay your hair colour from turning brassy. Use colour protecting shampoos and go for deep-conditioning hair treatments to extend the life of your coloured hair.

Other than turning brassy though, your roots will also grow out so you probably have to go back to the salon to retouch within 1-3 months!

3. Digital Perm for Fine Hair

Traditionally, it is not advisable for ladies with fine hair to go for perming. However, with advances in perm technology and improved quality of treatments, hairstylists in Singapore and in Japan are increasingly making it possible for perms to last for a longer period of time.

Art Noise, for example, came up with Chiffon Perm which utilizes a wide range of hair treatments to protect the hair so that the hair can hold the curls better. Therefore, some ladies with  fine hair report that the perm can actually last for up to 3 months or more! It isn't as effective for ladies with coarse hair, so it isn't for everyone.

Although not specifically designed for fine hair, the stylists at Picasso have successfully created volume perms for ladies with fine hair as well. These last for 1-2+ months so it can be a perfect hair service to go for if you have weddings and celebrations the following month!

We love how Picasso is very honest and knowledgeable about perms, so do arrange for a complimentary consultation if you aren't sure if your hair texture is suitable!

Scalp Treatment

Scalp Treatments

Nowadays scalp treatments are becoming just as popular as hair treatments. More folks are realising healthy, beautiful tresses starts at the scalp. Scalp treatments help to address issues like hair loss, oily scalp, dandruff and so on. However, just like you would need to schedule regular hair treatments to maintain the result, the same goes for scalp treatments. Since dead skin builds up on your scalp, a scalp treatment that includes exfoliation every few weeks is recommended to cleanse your scalp. The effect can last for about 3 to 6 weeks for those with normal scalp.

Hair Treatments

Hair treatments can last anywhere from a few days to 6 weeks. This of course depends on the type and quality of the hair treatment. If you are skimping on cost, chances are the hair treatment is not going to last after two washes.

Cheaper hair treatments usually mean the quality of the products used don’t have a long-lasting effect but these are cost-effective alternatives if you are heading out to an event and wish to look good for the day without spending too much.

Vibrant Hair Colours

Ombre Grey Hair

Unfortunately, as vibrant hair colours like pink, purple and yes grey require quite a good amount of bleaching, these striking shades don’t last long and quickly turn into pastel and ashy hues. This is why it’s wiser to opt for the vibrant colour even if you want to dye your hair a pastel shade.

To prolong your beautifully vibrant hair colour, try washing your hair only on alternate days and use colour protecting shampoos whenever possible. Even then, don't expect vibrant hair colours to last longer than 2 weeks!
