Wondering why men like Vincenzo get all the female attention? Song Joong Ki isn’t the most well-built nor the most good-looking male to grace the silver screen. Yet, even men who watched Vincenzo feel like emulating Song Joong Ki’s style after watching the show.
I’m one of them.
Hello, I’m Agent E, a recent university graduate. I know I probably looked like the shabbiest kid on campus but who cares if I walked around in slippers? I’m still in school.
In a few months time, however, I’m heading out to work. Somehow, I don’t think I’ll get much of a good impression if I head to work like this.
I know I needed a change but despite my 8 semesters of mixing-and-matching, trial-and-error, I am still in the woods. Meeting Agent G a few months ago, however, gave me a sliver of hope. She’s the founder of Beauty Undercover after all… could she find someone who can help me?
And so, she did.
Like a fairy godmother, Agent G recommended me to Picasso Hair Studio. Picasso recently introduced a new image consultancy service that included a makeover haircut as well as tailoring from their partner Urban Dappers.
Seeing them makeover Gabriel gave me much hope.
I don’t have to look like Vincenzo but could I at least transform as much as Gabriel?
Looks like I must give it a go to find out.
I could drop by the salon to have my measurements taken but I thought that dropping by the tailor’s boutique will probably give me a better idea of the clothes and designs available and so, I did.
I received a warm welcome from Drake, the inhouse tailor for Urban Dappers, when I first arrived.
“Welcome, Agent E! How can I help you today?”
Drake was so earnest and genuine that I found myself sharing my deepest insecurities with him.
“Hi Drake! I'm nearly 1.9m, with slightly uneven shoulders, a less-than-symmetrical face and what not. Can you make me look like Vincenzo… I mean, a presentable working professional?"
Seeing how nervous I am, Drake reassured me.
“Don’t worry, Agent E! I have worked with big people, small people, short people and tall people, people of different body shapes and sizes.
This is especially the case if
Why do you think that even store mannequins have so many pins running through the clothes? The purpose of us tailors is to tweak the shoulders, hem, and every other part so that we can show off your body in the most flattering way.
In fact, we can suppress some of the waist with the shirt and the suit to give our clients the sought after V shape… even without working out. Just by making sure that the fabric drapes onto the body without too much excess fabric or looking too small, you will look much more built.
To do so however, we will have to take very detailed measurements of every part of your body. Are you ready for that?”
To be honest, this is not my first time to the tailor. I have been to tailors in Singapore, Bangkok, and even the UK, and they usually take only 3 to 5 measurements and sent me off in a hurry. But here, Drake takes the effort to take not 3, not 5, but 21 measurements!
14 at the top and 7 at the bottom.
I can't remember exactly where the 14 measurements are but I remembered that he measured my shoulder, bicep, elbow.
Then, the neck, waist and even the armhole area for the top.
As for the bottom, he measured the hips, knees, waist and even the ankles and the inner thighs!
These additional measurements matter because it determines how well the clothes fit. You don't want to tailor a top, only to find it too tight around the neck, the sleeves too long / too short or have it look too baggy. The inner thigh area is another thing that most tailors neglect. You see, the rise of the pants can only be adjusted by only an inch or so - measuring it well ahead of time will ensure a perfect fit. ~ Drake
He was so thorough, Drake even discovered that my right calf is significantly bigger than my left and that my shoulders are quite slanted - factors he promised to take into consideration in the making of my shirt and pants.
No wonder, it always feels like my clothes don't fit well!
Once the measurement was completed, Drake brought me over to the fabrics showcase. Oof! They actually stock fabrics used in Zegna shirts and jackets.
TBH, the selection is so huge, I don't know where to start.
I know this can seem a little overwhelming at the beginning but here, we break down the style consultation into a few parts. First, the colour, then the fabric, the collar design, and finally the button design. Colour is the first thing people notice from a distance, long before the fabric comes into play. I usually recommend those of us with a pink undertone to go for warm tone colours with a tinge of cool colours and those with yellow and blue undertones to go for darker cooler tones. As you have more of a pink undertone, I recommend a lilac to flatter your existing skin colour.
That's interesting - I didn't realize that I was suitable for warmer colour tones! What he said makes sense and since I don't have a lilac shirt yet, I took to his suggestion immediately.
Next, Drake introduced some fabrics for the pants. He shared with me that the blue will probably make my shirt look more distinctive. Great minds think alike… I already have a pair of pants in this colour! Since that was the case, Drake recommended for me to go for the more versatile black which incidentally I don’t yet have.
Next, we move on to collars.
It may not take up a huge surface area but your collar design is the part of the shirt that enhances your facial features and make you look slimmer. You can choose between collars that are conventional point, spread, button down or more unusual ones like a pin or tab collar for style but the key thing is to match the collar to the height and spread of the collar. For men who have a larger frame and / or have a round face shape, I would recommend a spread collar with slightly taller collar to balance the proportion of the face to the body.
For a button to look good on the shirt, we can employ the colour triad theory to accentuate the look and feel of a person. To complement the look even further, button thread and button hole thread colours can also be chosen and customised to suit a colour scheme to bring out your personality.
Finally, you can even customize your cuffs. You can see there are single button styles and double button styles and cuts for the cuffs. One thing to note, for cuffs that are suitable for cufflinks, only the French cuff design is suitable for that as it has a different cutting and measurement to cater to the option to wear cufflinks. Here at Urban Dappers, we do two-in-one cuffs that work with both buttons and cuff links, depending on occasion.
Thw two-in-one cuffs sound interesting so that's what I went for!
Want to know what Drake means by it?
Here's a sneak preview of my shirt!
Depending on occasion, I can choose to wear it with the buttons or cuffs on!
With that, I’m done with the consultation!
I’ve got to wait about 2 weeks for the clothes to be done but hey, all good things must wait… right?
Look at my mop of hair.
It’s been two weeks since the tailoring consult and my hair just doesn’t let up.
TBH, I don't usually let my hair grow that long... but it just happens to be that I coincided the hair makeover with the fitting of my tailored shirt and pants at Picasso Hair Studio.
So yes, I know I'm in dire need of a haircut.
It is my first time at Picasso Hair Studio in Novena and the easel mirrors certainly made me feel like I’m walking into an art gallery.
Am I a sculpture to be moulded today?
The stylist who attended to me is Carmen, a very confident stylist who knew her stuff. After probing about my lifestyle and preferences, she very astutely profiled my face shape and personality.
“Leave your hair in my hands, Agent E.
I’ll help you become your very own Vincenzo.
Sleek, Stylish and you. ”
She spoke with a twinkle in her eye.
Looking like a doctor right out k-drama Doctors, she prepped the gown for me and got me ready for the “operation”.
First step: hair wash and massage.
It feels so good now but is this the calm before the storm?
As we headed back to the seat, I understood why the hair wash was necessary!
With delicate precision and measurements, Carmen took great lengths (pun intended!) to make sure that she followed the flow of my hair growth to snip off the loose ends.
You may not tell from it from my face, but I was a tad bit worried. This is my first time having someone cut my bangs without any measurements.
But hey, it turned out amazing!
Next, Carmen proceeded to trim off the back of my head. While the sound got me thinking about gardens and grasscutters, I’m just glad that she’s weeding the unwanted out.
Side view anybody?
Have you seen those Kungfu movies where the actors move faster than we can blink? This is the haircut version. Can you imagine how amazed I was at how fast Carmen was snipping?
Blowing off the remnants. And wow, their hairdryer is really something else. Strong, comfortable gusts of wind that I wouldn’t mind having it blown longer.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s better looking after all?
And, the final product is out.
A Picasso masterpiece along with Drake’s magic touch. Notice how there’s a slight tint of lilac in the shirt to match my pink undertone?
Follows the shape of my sides closely too, right?
The swirls from the epicentre look nice right? Got some layering too!
What does it look like with the newly tailored shirt in full view? From my grin ear to ear, you can tell I am delighted.
Could this pass off as my linkedin profile photo?
I can’t say I look like Vincenzo but we need not live up to the beauty standards of others – we each have our own unique style!
Who dis Singaporean oppa?
Certainly very different from the ajussi who walked in earlier.
