Hi, I'm Agent CC.
I'm not very particular about hair but I'm one of those who would go to a random hair salon on a whim, just to get a surprise colour and perm for myself to perk me up.
Very unfortunately, the last service burned my pockets.
I randomly searched for a salon. Without reading many reviews, I decided to walk in after a movie to do my hair with a salon around Dhoby Ghaut.
The hair result was kind of disappointing. The stylist was very nice but she bleached and permed my hair at the same time without letting me know that those two combinations were actually pretty much incompatible. As a result, the hair colour wasn't too bright and the perm not defined at all. Worse of all, they charged me close to $500. This is how my hair looked like a couple of months after.
I complained to one of my friends, whose husband happens to be a hairstylist.
Who knew that he actually offered to fix my hair colour for me, if I don't mind being featured as a hair model?
Yes, the hairstylist is Zen, the founder of Mane Made Studio @ Hougang.
To be honest, I'm not very close to Zen and so I actually looked through his portfolio before starting.
Wah, not bad!
Seeing how pretty his hair colours are, I decided to take on this invitation.
So, here I am, sharing my experience.
The moment I sat down, I was offered a choice of beverages that included green tea, honey water and so on.
Zen came over shortly to consult with me. He heard about my previous debacle at the salon and also what I did before. Zen is however not one who will bash the other salon or stylist, something I appreciated.
He did however mention that a perm is not really suitable for me because of my hair texture and also because I do not have the time and patience to maintain my hair afterwards.
Instead, he recommended me to do a peekaboo pastel pink, peach and ash grey combination. Knowing that I just booked a winter holiday to Korea, Zen mentions that this hair colour design should look really good in snow photos. I think peek-a-boo is a very good idea because I'm not the super loud type of person and I don't want everyone looking at me due to my pastel colours. Hence just a hint of pastel within is good enough for me.
We looked through the colour chart and Zen suggested some colours.
I'm pretty okay with everything as long as it looks good!
Pastel colours however require further bleaching.
Hence the first thing he did was to bleach the relevant sections.
Bleaching is a pretty looooonggg process as each round of bleaching requires me to wait at least 20-30 minutes
Well, at least the hair washing was good!
The hair was however not sufficiently lightened so we would have to bleach the hair one more time.
I like how Zen doesn't just leave me here to my own devices but check on my hair texture once in a while to make sure its alright.
He also tries his best to entertain me with his lame / cold jokes so the entire visit wasn't boring at all!
While waiting for the second bleach to process, he coloured the top section of my hair brown to save some time.
One more wash at the basin once the bleach is done.
Can you kind of see the peek-a-boo effect already?
Finally, it was time to colour the lightened parts of the hair.
There was peach
Blue and purple
Wonder how they will look like afterwards!
We went for a final wash but it was still not yet done!
The perfectionist Zen wanted to trim off a little more.
Love how nice the colour looks like when lifted like this!
One blowdry later and we are almost done.
Remember how I looked earlier?
Totally love the colour!
I prefer colours that are bright yet subtle at the same time and this hair colour fits me to the tee!
Outwardly not too bright but just flip it and you can see the cool side of me.
I loved my time at Mane Made. The salon is not the biggest and decor not very premium but its a nice and cozy place with warm and sincere service. The hair wash was good, the stylist professional yet fun to be around, there is no upselling or hardselling and the service is good.
Zen took the time to style my hair, which is something I expect more from Orchard salons than neighbourhood salons.
Best of all, the hair colour is really good! I've been raving to my friends about how Zen's colour looks so pretty and how amazed I was to find that his Balayage actually lasted a good stretch of 3 weeks! (with the help of colour shampoo and conditioner I bought from them of course)
The only downside is that bleaching is a very long process that I'm not fond of repeating often. Still, I know that this is the place I will come back to for a hair colour; the company is good and it makes the waiting process a lot more bearable.
I know I'll definitely be back to Mane Made Studio in a couple of months to update my hair colour, together with the friends I'll bring along.
Hope to see you there too :)
