Hi, I'm Agent NH, an undergrad at UOL.
I'm one of those who is pretty fussy about my hair.
I found this hairstylist I really like years ago in Singapore. Even after she move to JB, I go to her salon in JB just to get my hair cut because she knows exactly how I like it. It does however mean that my haircut hasn't changed much for some time.
My girlfriend however began to bug me to try new hairstyles after watching some Korean dramas.
I brushed her suggestion off immediately but the persistent her showed me some photos...
And I thought, hey that looked not too bad at all.
Having done all the research, she suggested me to look for Joel Park from Pro Trim @ Ngee Ann City. He's like among the best Korean stylists for perms in Singapore and even does hair for like this very famous pastor and other celebs.
Whatever goes man.. as long as my hair looks good at the end of the day.
This is how my hair looks like now.
It's a little long but that's what I'm told is required for a perm.
I made an appointment after my internship at the salon. Joel was busy at first but he came over to attend to me after a few minutes. He checked my hair texture and said that yes, my hair is suitable for a perm.
Being my first time, I'm a little nervous. Would I end up with super curly hair like Phua Chu Kang? Joel reassured me that the perm will be done subtly so that it will look more natural and help me style more easily without making me end up with super curly hair.
Sounds good, so I left my hair in his hands.
Joel gave instructions to the Korean hair assistant to wash my hair before proceeding. She was very attentive and made sure to place towels and covers on my back and neck to keep my body dry.
She escorted me to the wash area and made sure I was comfortable.
She gave a good head massage along with the wash, making the experience pretty enjoyable.
I could feel myself drifting away.
No time to sleep, though. The process has just begun!
Back at the seat, she blew my hair dry to prepare it for the haircut.
Joel came by and gave me a quick trim.
He tried to keep the length but cut it in such a way so that the curls can come out more obviously later on.
He even provided a visor so that the hair wouldn't get into my eye.
The nape of my neck was also trimmed slightly for an overall cleaner look.
Once the haircut is over, the next step is to apply the perm lotion.
Joel's assistant started by applying perm lotion all over the hair.
Once it was all done, I had to wait it out for a bit while the perm lotion softens the hair.
Joel checked that my hair was ready to be curled and began the curling process.
This time, it is Joel himself who rolled my hair onto the blue rollers and fixed them neatly in place.
The rollers were really small so I was a little worried there that my curls will come out very curly but I decided to trust Joel anyway.
Once he was done, I had to go under this machine to heat up the neutralizer.
Look like Marge Simpson for a minute there, don't I?
15 minutes later, Joel checked on my hair to see if it was ready...
and indeed, it was!
Time for the final wash!
He slowly removed the rollers one by one to make sure the curls held their shape.
My hair was then shampooed, rinsed, and dried.
Back at the seat, Joel blew my hair dry and did some final touch ups
and we are almost done!
Here's how it looked afterwards!
The curls are a little retro but I kinda like how they add just a hint of curls and volume for that more pong look.
Definitely better than the mop I had before?
I also like how the shaved parts make this hairstyle look edgier and more boyish, instead of a full-on K-drama style perm.
Overall, pretty satisfied with the perm!
I was worried about my hair looking too curly at the beginning of the perm but I needn't have. Understanding my apprehension, Joel intentionally designed a perm with just enough curls to give volume without making it too obvious.
It looks not too bad, isn't it?
This made me think.. could I go for something even more textured / curly in the future?
This process takes under 2 hours after all, something I can do while waiting for my gf to get her own hair or shopping done.
Best part is that it cuts maintenance time so styling in the morning is really quick.
Would definitely recommend bros to give this a try!
